This is an old story that I personally don't remember, but it came up tonight on CNN as they discussed Vance's desperate flailing at Walz's military record:
https://money.cnn.com/2016/10/14/media/trump-stern-vietnam-stds/index.html
It won't make anyone think less of Trump (not possible on either side), but it might help shut Vance up.

its just now dawning on me how incredibly strange it would have been had the shooter hit. like the man who was the central character of America for 8 years, who was openly promising to unravel the country and at the time looked increasingly likely to have the chance to do so, just randomly shot in the head by some kid with apparently no agenda whatsoever. it would have been one of the wildest news stories ever, something that might actually convince me we live in a science project. I mean after ALL THAT the thing he would be most remembered for hadn't even happened yet. surely he would be remembered for many other things too but what's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of JFK? and there it's just the grainy video, had it happened here you would see the picture and video everywhere, it would instantly become the most famous photo of Trump there is
and I genuinely don't know how we would've reacted! surely the familiar crazies would go apeshit but the GOP as a whole? how would they really feel about Trump when there's no reason to suck up to him anymore??
― frogbs, Friday, 9 August 2024 01:42 (one year ago)
saw some psychologist on social media claiming that a 78yo man is gonna be severely traumatized by that for the rest of his life
but everyone seems to have forgotten it already, and we're making fun of him for barely campaigning
i mean, i'm all for it -- he sucks and deserves every bad thing happening to him -- but also he's a complete mess in unanticipated ways
― mookieproof, Friday, 9 August 2024 01:55 (one year ago)
I was debating with a buddy about the attempted assassination and while we both hate Trump from the depth of our hearts, his killing would've been really, really bad for the country
He's no Archduke Franz Ferdinand but it would not have ended well.. I'm pleasant surprised how quickly everyone has forgotten this attempt

― lag∞n, Friday, 9 August 2024 02:03 (one year ago)
it almost feels like the same thing we experienced with Biden! his age was always a concern but that debate made it the #1 thing overnight, even moreso than all the shit Trump was doing. suddenly every single Biden appearance was being analyzed much more carefully and things he'd been doing for a while now suddenly seemed much more concerning. I wonder if Trump is himself reaching that zone, every single appearance he's made the last 2 weeks has been an utter disaster, even the Adin Ross thing was really strange

had it been someone who was directly connected to the Democratic party in some tangible way or even someone with a lot of rude Twitter posts about Trump it might've been a much different story, like they'd actually have something with the "here's what happens when you talk about Trump like that!" thing

I love reading Heather Knight! I'm an SF Chronicle fan and was sorry that she went from them to reporting for the NYT
I still remember Willie Brown saying with admiration (long after their brief relationship in the 90s) that Kamala Harris was going straight to the top. It seemed plausible even 20+ years ago
― Dan S, Friday, 9 August 2024 02:27 (one year ago)
I think it might slowly become one, like that Willie Brown story is a great example, not only is it completely made up it's something that makes no sense to lie about in the first place, it's not even a small lie it's a story about a brush with death, no reason at all to make that up. I mean when he's brazenly lying about crowd sizes and poll numbers you could at least argue it's a legit political strategy, the "silent majority" thing does play pretty well
― frogbs, Friday, 9 August 2024 02:31 (one year ago)
I mean how hard is it to go from "that bullet hit me really hard" when it barely grazed him and maybe it wasn't a bullet at all, to "I almost died with Willie Brown!"

The rest of the piece has lots of garbage about Walz.
Part of the uniqueness of MN is that our iteration of the Democratic Party is Democratic Farmer-Labour; those two elements get a look-in beyond just being named if our local politicians are doing their jobs.

he never met a fake close call with helicopter death story that he didn't like:
After a chartered helicopter crashed and killed three of Donald Trump’s top executives in October 1989, the real estate mogul was distraught. “These were three fabulous young men in the prime of their lives,” he said in a statement. “No better human beings ever existed. We are deeply saddened by this devastating tragedy, and our hearts go out to their families.” A few months later, Trump told New York magazine that the crash had shocked him, showing him “how short and fragile life is.” The event, he said, helped convince him he should leave his wife Ivana.
But did Trump cheat death that day? “Sources said Trump himself was scheduled to be on the flight but decided at the last minute he was too busy to leave New York,” United Press International reported the day following the tragedy. Other outlets reported the same claim from the Trump camp, including Long Island’s Newsday and the New York Daily News, which slapped the report on its cover.
At least one biographer, former Village Voice reporter Wayne Barrett, believed the claim was a PR stunt. In his book, Trump: The Greatest Show On Earth, Barrett wrote that Trump “did not hesitate to use [the crash] for personal advantage. He planted stories suggesting that he had almost boarded the chartered copter himself, though he’d never ridden to Atlantic City on one, trusting only his [personal] Puma [helicopter].”
And after the Daily News story about Trump’s close call appeared, one of his executives told the Associated Press it was false. “Trump had definitely never planned to be on it,” said Bernie Dillon, vice president of Trump Sports and Entertainment.
As BuzzFeed noted last year, Trump later walked back his claim that he was supposed to be on the flight. He described it instead as a fleeting idea he had as the executives left his office. “As quickly as the idea had popped into my mind, I decided not to go,” he said in Surviving at the Top, his 1990 book.
