School friend I’ve known since I was 7 is doing a special victory lap because it turns out her eldest (Gustavus class of ‘21) is Walz’ deputy press secretary.

Harris vs. Trump Is Taking Shape. And Then There’s Maude. (stevie), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 10:08 (one year ago)

From Beto:

We became friends in Congress, going on early morning runs (in the dead of DC winter, I’m bundled in layers and he’s wearing a t-shirt and shorts), talking Minnesota music, the Replacements (Tim!), Prince, Dylan, Husker Du, and sharing stories about our families and hometowns.

Should Walz confess that Stevie Nicks' Rock a Little is his favorite album by anyone, I'd propose making him emperor for life.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 12:04 (one year ago)

in honor of Steve Albini I think he should have Big Black's Songs About Fucking as his favorite album.

You did when she passed Obamacare

― default damager (lukas), Wednesday, August 7, 2024 1:03 AM (seven hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

hard not to point out that this is just another story of her behind the scenes dealings, everyone wanted to quit but nancy said hey no guys we should do this, tho tbf in this case it is about actual legislation being passed so im willing to give partial credit

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 12:32 (one year ago)

i mean maybe you could make an argument for her being the mastermind she claims to be because shes allowed to take credit for everything and no one can say otherwise

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 12:38 (one year ago)

Here's the thought experiment: Josh Shapiro is Josh Shapiro in every way except his name is Chris Gentile. Would she have picked Walz. You know she wouldn't.

Already seeing my local right-wing dudes parroting the "Walz let rioters run wild and Kamala bailed 'em out" line, I'm sure we'll see endless footage of Minneapolis Burning in campaign ads, alongside homeless people shooting up on the San Fran streets, that scary-racial-boogeyman stuff is most of what they're left with at this point. Along with inflation and hoping for a prolonged stock market slump. Not sure how much any of that really registers outside the Fox News universe, especially the 2020 protests which I think have recede considerably in most people's minds.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 13:29 (one year ago)

i'm genuinely intrigued to see what my local area is going to look like in the coming weeks. there was an immediate showing of Trump signs on the lawns of the known crazies right after the debate, but absolutely no Biden signs before or since. i'd like to think that's going to change real soon now that the ticket is finalized.

funny little story circulating that the gop wanted walz and worked behind the scenes to undermine shapiro, all anonymously sourced needless to say, they were high fiving at trump hq

Omg Walz is a GIS guy too.

Heez, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 13:42 (one year ago)

someone should tell kamala harris that if i type "kamala harris" into google her website doesn't show up at all no matter how much i scroll. just an actblue ad for donations. i have to type in "kamala harris campaign" to get it at the top. these little things matter. you'd be surprised. seems weird.

scott seward, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 13:42 (one year ago)

compelling portrait of the political creature constantly scrambling for "wins" even ones that no one else is competing for xp self

Most of calendar year 2020 is so memoryholed at this point, on his part it would almost work to Trump's advantage not to bring up anything to do with it.

everything about trump seems so old. using a presidential speech from fucking 40 years ago and barely showing trump

a (waterface), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 13:50 (one year ago)

the Bulwark article is such BS. The Trump campaign has been spinning every L and every Trump digression as "actually, this was our brilliant devious strategy all along." I mean, one day Republican leaders and pundits were pleading with their people to not be racist, a day later Trump started yammering about Harris' race, they were all "this diatribe by Trump was planned all along and is our brilliant strategy that will win."

someone should tell kamala harris that if i type "kamala harris" into google her website doesn't show up at all no matter how much i scroll

i noticed this yesterday too. I had to google "harris for president" to find it.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 13:58 (one year ago)

Again, like other governors under consideration, Shapiro lacked Congressional experience. He is only 19 months into his first term, while the other governors under consideration were all in second terms. Beltway moaners gonna moan…

guillotine vogue (suzy), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 14:00 (one year ago)

The whole "pivot to the center" expectation is so lame-brained. I saw somebody making a smart point about this the other day, that the assumption that the key to "independent" or "undecided" voters is to treat them like they sit on some mythical exact midpoint between wherever the two parties happen to be is just completely dumb. More than anything, most voters — and especially less ideological voters — want good narratives, storylines, something that seems reassuring or exciting or new or any combination of those things. They in particular really are voting for the people rather than the parties. And I don't know how to assess, say, Shapiro vs. Walz for those voters, but if they like one more than the other it's not going to be because they think one is more or less "centrist."

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 14:01 (one year ago)

yes?

am I better off than fall/winter 2020? yes I am.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 14:05 (one year ago)

Four years ago there were still lockdowns, social distancing, very compromised experiences at the movies/concerts as that stuff reopened etc.

Generally speaking, we're better off now than we were four years ago, and most problems we're still dealing with on the ground here date back to 2020.

Charlie Hair (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 14:07 (one year ago)

1980 was 44 years ago, man. Forty-four years before 1980 was FDR's 1936 landslide election.
