Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 19:07 (one year ago)

i watched the entire pole vault final replay last night. 3+ hours. worth every penny.

scott seward, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 19:08 (one year ago)

Indeed!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 19:13 (one year ago)

that bloody american though...for a second i thought he was doing a homage to trump. and then he took some of mondo's blood! what a weirdo. he was a little too aryan for me. but maybe he's a swell guy i have no idea.

scott seward, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 19:21 (one year ago)

he was very good. for the record.

scott seward, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 19:21 (one year ago)

and the greek guy was great too.

scott seward, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 19:21 (one year ago)

Nice long jump, and now bring on the women's 200m!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 19:37 (one year ago)

Whew, Thomas with the greatness! No contest!

Water polo QF between US and Hungary and the Hockey between India and Germany looked like classics

well below the otm mendoza line (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 6 August 2024 20:50 (one year ago)

Truly! And a deserved Swiss victory in the end.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 August 2024 20:51 (one year ago)

yeah, happy for the Swiss, US never really had control in that one.

if this site were a food it would have NO nutritional value!!!!!!! (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 6 August 2024 20:53 (one year ago)

either way win game 2 was fair. like i love to dismiss everything, but that sport, every hit seems impossible to me

Second gold medal for Kellie Harrington in boxing

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 6 August 2024 21:51 (one year ago)

Watching dinghy finals. Pleasingly boring.

default damager (lukas), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 03:01 (one year ago)

damn u could watch the last 300m of the mens 1500 and see all the stages of competition. man i wish i knew the rules and norms for the finish. i saw hocker tapping ingebrigtsen’s hip and i was like “lol he isn’t moving for you,” but… he seemed to do.

also winfred yavi’s steeple finish was similarly undeniable.

well below the otm mendoza line (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 03:34 (one year ago)

also do faulkner and thomas get private harvard gold parties and a private harvard jet home? because i’m a little sick of hearing about their harvard shit ha

Didn’t they say something about how Ingewhatever typically moves wide on the last 100m?

default damager (lukas), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 06:25 (one year ago)

No never mind, consensus is that Inge* was moving wide to deal with Kerr.

When the commentator said early on that Hocker could take this due to his finishing kick, I thought it was homerism.

default damager (lukas), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 06:43 (one year ago)

Yes, Ingebrigtsen was focussed on Kerr, as were most people!

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 06:48 (one year ago)

Thought this was pretty good on the race though slightly overdone.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 06:57 (one year ago)

i saw Kerr's hype video and he seemed a bit of a nob so this result was v funny to me

you'll find this funny, children (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 07:09 (one year ago)

At least Lyles backed up his antics

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 07:47 (one year ago)

xp

When the commentator said early on that Hocker could take this due to his finishing kick, I thought it was homerism.

yeah, me too. i was super impressed by the finish dynamics, with hocker backing off and looking to reposition, and then so clearly going again on the inside.

it was dramatic and tactical in a way that was closer to how cycling sprints work than i’m used to seeing in running.

France Get Handball QF is tight. ET

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 13:23 (one year ago)

That was incredible. France lost through a Gerrard like back pass that led to Ger equalizing with 5 seconds left. Then they won at ET

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 13:37 (one year ago)

Water polo and Serbia Greece finish was incredible. Greece scored with 10 20 seca to go and Serbia smashed one in with two secs left to win it!

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 14:50 (one year ago)

10-20 secs to go...so much desperation in water polo as it gets tight its great

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 14:51 (one year ago)

USA - Poland at the men's volleyball SF. We are going to a final set. Poland were drifting for ages.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 16:06 (one year ago)

This is the guy that came up with the goods when Poland needed it the most.

He's Cuban

Great finish Pol!

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 16:28 (one year ago)

Across the team sports its been v close from all I've seen. No different as we get to the last few mins of Denmark Sweden Handball

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 16:51 (one year ago)

A single point again.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 17:07 (one year ago)

Just easing into the day's track and field here. (I can't remember why exactly but I've followed NZ pole vaulter Eliza McCartney on FB for a while -- I think it was the 2021 performance -- and it's fun to see her at it!)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 18:01 (one year ago)

US beat the Aussies at the water polo on pens after having a man sent off for a punch in normal time (they had a man less for nearly a quarter of the match)

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 18:20 (one year ago)

China conceded a goal at the women's hockey SF with a couple of mins left to send us to a shootout. As the final whistle went the Chinese hit the ball at the Belgian lol. So much violence!

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 18:32 (one year ago)

We were near a brawl, great stuff

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 18:33 (one year ago)

Lol the Belgian lobbed the Chinese goalie!

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 18:37 (one year ago)

And that was as good as it got for them. The Chinese are in the final!

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 18:42 (one year ago)

Italy getting annihilated at the other volleyball SF. France are defending Olympic Champions. Italy are current World Champions but its a cauldron. That's what home advantage gives.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 19:05 (one year ago)

Maybe a stupid question but for the pole vault, can the poles get longer? Or will the record breaking eventually top out with how far you can go on the size of the pole?

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 19:05 (one year ago)

The poles are always the poles; the height bar is what is adjusted. If you succeed you keep going; if you're the last one left you go as far as you want to until you fail at your chances or just decide you're done. Once Duplantis had locked up the gold he could have done anything; he called for a height to break the world record because he could (he could have gone lower, or higher, or just stopped). His obvious plan was to break the record -- his own -- and did.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 19:16 (one year ago)

(It does make the pole vault an interesting open-ended event in that way -- unless I'm completely wrong, it's the only field event where it's not a question of best-of-however-many-rounds, but literally ends only whenever it does.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 August 2024 19:17 (one year ago)

Okay, men's 400, here we go...
