Re: bears

I have cooked and eaten bear meat, and made bear sausage, and rendered bear lard and used it for pie crust. You can only eat bear if it's been living off berries - bears that eat fish and trash taste too nasty to eat. The meat by itself is very fatty and I don't really like the flavor, which is quite strong and distinctive. Bear lard makes an okay crust for a quiche, but has too strong a flavor for a pie. The sausage, on the other hand, is very good because of the high fat content. You do need to make sure you cook it thoroughly because bears, like pigs, can give you trichinosis.

Hence the standing argument that my aunt and uncle have from time to time, which goes like this:

Aunt: A bear is a pig.
Uncle, mildly: Well, it's not really a pig.
Aunt, firmly: Yes, a bear is a pig.
Uncle: Well, I wouldn't say it's a pig, exactly.

And so on.

in local news, i saw a very old man emerge from his car in the parking lot of a sad grocery store by the freeway. he was wearing a trump hat and he literally looked like the cryptkeeper.

xp all bears are pigs, it's true

according to this Walz's net work is $13k, so that should offset any weird feelings people have about Harris' necklace

on a sidenote to the sidenotes....

on the one hand: stocks plummeted today. on the other: SCOTUS says go ahead and sentence the mango. politically, do they cancel each other out?

keen reverberations of twee (collardio gelatinous), Monday, 5 August 2024 20:08 (one year ago)

I don't know how much the stock market matters. It's been at consistent record highs and people still think the economy sucks (because for most people obv the stock market being at a record high is at best an abstract benefit, their 401ks go up if they have them but they're not going to use them for years). Plus, assuming we get Fed rate cuts in September the markets will most likely rally again.

Also pheasants.

He seems like a pheasant plucker.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Monday, 5 August 2024 20:39 (one year ago)

(xpost) Been thinking about that today too, reached the same conclusion: it's a blip that will reverse itself soon, and that it's a stock-market thing anyway, not a big election concern. (Though you know Trump will make a big deal of it while he can.) The VP story should drown it out anyway, so as long as it's not the start of something long-term.

The Georgia GOP civil war that trump keeps trying to start seems like it might be starting

An altercation broke out at a recent Trump campaign office opening in Valdosta when a conservative activist confronted a Republican state legislator who sponsored changes to the state’s election laws, according to interviews and a police report. #gapol

Here we go?:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -At least five U.S. personnel were injured in an attack against a military base in Iraq on Monday, U.S. officials told Reuters, as the Middle East braced for a possible new wave of attacks by Iran and its allies following last week's killing of senior members of militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah.
...It was unclear whether the attack was linked to threats by Iran to retaliate over the killings.

On Wednesday, Iran said the U.S. bears responsibility in the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran because of its support for Israel.

The U.S. officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said one of the wounded Americans was seriously injured. The casualty count was based on initial reports which could still change, they said.

...Last week the U.S. carried out a strike in Iraq against individuals U.S. officials said were militants getting ready to launch drones and posed a threat to U.S. and coalition forces.

...A rare ally of both the U.S. and Iran, Iraq hosts 2,500 U.S. troops and has Iran-backed militias linked to its security forces. It has witnessed escalating tit-for-tat attacks since the Israel-Hamas war erupted in October.

Iraq wants troops from the U.S.-led military coalition to begin withdrawing in September and to formally end the coalition's work by September 2025, Iraqi sources have said, with some U.S. forces likely to remain in a newly negotiated advisory capacity.

Biden has been signalling the best he can that he has zero appetite for a wider war and desperately wants a ceasefire asap before such any such expansion of the war gets out of hand, so in a crazy way, Iran may be safer targeting US troops in Iraq than targeting Israel. The Imams may be calculating that an low intensity attack on US troops in Iraq will be satisfactorily face-saving and rob the crazies in Bibi's cabinet from having an excuse for massive escalation. I guess we'll see.

... By giving Israel billions of dollars in weapons and military support to murder tens of thousands indiscriminately... including the head negotiator for said ceasefire?? Ok
