I’m puzzled about the purpose of the video now. doesn’t he basically just tell the story the NYer reporter, but with roseanne barr? what was he trying to dispel exactly

brony james (k3vin k.), Monday, 5 August 2024 15:46 (one year ago)

the man has a brain worm kevin

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 15:47 (one year ago)

(if we're talking houses, Bernie's houses were a thing, unsurprisingly imo)

something that only seems to happen to men tbh

brony james (k3vin k.), Monday, 5 August 2024 15:47 (one year ago)

you should be smart enough to know that this is a bad look for a Dem candidate

the only people who ever seem to pipe up about these things are pundits who say they are concerned that others might think it's a bad look

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 5 August 2024 15:50 (one year ago)

but maybe somebody can do a poll asking likely voters if they think it's okay for the vice-president of the united states to wear an expensive necklace sometimes and then we can put these grave concerns to bed

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:03 (one year ago)

Weren't "Bernie's houses," like, a reasonable family home for a successful official plus an apartment that he needed in DC plus a cabin in the woods? No need to do Fox's work for them here imo. I wasn't even a hard Bernie stan at the time but I feel like when a family member asked me recently "What do you make of the accusations that Fauci profited off the vaccines" -- like, I see no need to accept that question at face value or that framing.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Monday, 5 August 2024 16:06 (one year ago)

bernies was a modest lake house purchased years ago that was due to housing crisis now worth one million dollars or smth

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:08 (one year ago)

obama getting a bunch of cash dumped on him by wall st immediately upon leaving office maybe on at the very top of his list but its def on there

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:08 (one year ago)

and just generally do people feel like theyre being ruled by unaccountable ultra wealthy elites, going to go with a big yes

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:09 (one year ago)

I’m puzzled about the purpose of the video now. doesn’t he basically just tell the story the NYer reporter, but with roseanne barr? what was he trying to dispel exactly

I think the difference is that the New Yorker makes it seem like the whole thing was a lark -- he picked up the bear simply because he was "tickled" that he found it and then "got an idea" / "thought it would be funny" to drop it in Central Park with the bike. Whereas the story he tells to Roseanne is that he picked it up because he planned to skin it and save the meat, but ended up not having time to do that, so he was in a bind and had to put it somewhere. But it's an insane story either way.

jaymc, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:10 (one year ago)

yeah hes a redneck whos gonna eat the bear meat lol

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:11 (one year ago)

oh john kerry windsurfing too

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:12 (one year ago)

I don't think there's anything wrong with it but Sanders's "cabin in the woods" cost him $575,000 -- he's a guy with a second home, which is something most people don't have! He's a rich guy! Almost all Senators are! He's probably below median richness for a Senator, but yes, national politicians, of every political persuasion, are primarily very rich people. (To be clear -- primarily 5%-1%'ers, like Sanders, doctor rich, not .01%-ers like Trump or Pritzker or Bloomberg.)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 5 August 2024 16:13 (one year ago)

id just make them all get real jobs and replace them with not rich people personally, and then id make it a law that those people are never allowed to get rich

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:14 (one year ago)

Xp, I thought one of those properties was something his wife inherited.

"the Clintons have an estimated net worth of $120 million today, according to Celebrity Net Worth.Nov 9, 2023"

scott seward, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:15 (one year ago)

thats the best they could do, sad

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:16 (one year ago)

I don't think U.S. Congress reps are necessarily rich, by the way -- they're younger and there are fewer people who get in by being rich. Like, I don't think Ocasio-Cortez is rich, I think she has more normal-person finances. Of course at some point she'll get a 6-figure book deal but that's still not the same as being a doctor and having a 6-figure annual income.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 5 August 2024 16:16 (one year ago)

"Al Gore is a former senator, Vice President, environmental activist, and entrepreneur who has a net worth of $300 million."

scott seward, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:16 (one year ago)

he keeps it all in his lockbox.

scott seward, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:16 (one year ago)

and he gets the royalties from inventing the internet

symsymsym, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:17 (one year ago)

anyone in congress who plays ball with the corps can have no show board jobs or whatever and be rich when they get out

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:17 (one year ago)

"Bernie Sanders is an American politician who has a net worth of $3 million. Bernie Sanders has been a United States Senator representing Vermont since 2007. He has also undertaken a number of Presidential campaigns. Bernie's most recent financial disclosure is from 2018. At that point, he estimated his net worth to be $1.7 million, the vast majority of which was earned from book advances and royalties. As we detail in the next section of this article below, according to his tax returns, between 2009 and 2018, Bernie earned $4.7 million. He and his wife own around $1.8 million worth of real estate, though they carry mortgages on all three properties."

scott seward, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:18 (one year ago)

even anti corp people like like aoc can prob do a somewhat down market version and do pretend work for big non profits or whatever

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:19 (one year ago)

I’m ok with people being rich and having nice things that I don’t have. Just pass good policy plz, you can do both.

Jeff, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:19 (one year ago)

the problem is they tend to not do that

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:20 (one year ago)

i do have a problem with people being rich tho fwiw or at least super rich

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:21 (one year ago)

I thought one of those properties was something his wife inherited.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/reliable-source/wp/2016/08/10/bernie-sanders-buys-a-half-million-dollar-vacation-home-and-the-internet-cries-hypocrisy/

https://people.com/home/bernie-sanders-summer-home/

It's a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom house, 1800 square feet. It's not a cabin, it's a house than the house where my family and I live. He bought it, his wife didn't inherit it, but he did use proceeds from selling a place his wife inherited -- yes, if you have family money that you can use to buy a $575,000 seasonal house, you are rich. But I don't think there's any hypocrisy in being rich and sticking up for not-rich people, I think sticking up for not-rich people is the morally correct stance for everybody at every income level. Hypocrisy would be having the generational wealth to buy a second house and then saying that you shouldn't have to pay taxes to support people who didn't work hard for their wealth like you did.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 5 August 2024 16:23 (one year ago)

tho i do think the whole conversation about rich politicians is somewhat looking at it backwards, its a symptom, the only thing that gets good things for ordinary people is people power, using that power to influence the political system

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:25 (one year ago)

There's better shrimp at the parties of the people who don't want you to do stuff

Jersey Devil Vance (President Keyes), Monday, 5 August 2024 16:27 (one year ago)

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:28 (one year ago)

lag∞n, Monday, 5 August 2024 16:30 (one year ago)

Jersey Devil Vance (President Keyes), Monday, 5 August 2024 16:39 (one year ago)

When I lived on the east coast I never ate fish. Now that I'm in Montana, on the shore of a giant lake, I eat fish a couple of times a week, it feels like. Still not gonna eat bugs, whether shrimp-sized or lobster-sized.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Monday, 5 August 2024 16:39 (one year ago)
