How long is it ok for a totally normal person to keep a dead bear cub in their car, asking for a friend. On average, you know, how many different errands would a completely normal dude run before deciding there is no further need for the dead bear in the car? And is it ok to meet friends out for dinner after manhandling a bear carcass into your car and driving it around for a while? I mean this all seems legit to me, just wondering.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 4 August 2024 22:01 (one year ago)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign on Sunday was launching “Republicans for Harris” as she looks to win over Republican voters put off by Donald Trump’s candidacy.

The program will be a “campaign within a campaign,” according to Harris’ team, using well-known Republicans to activate their networks, with a particular emphasis on primary voters who backed former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. The program will kick off with events this week in Arizona, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Republicans backing Harris will also appear at rallies with the vice president and her soon-to-be-named running mate this coming week, the campaign said.

scott seward, Sunday, 4 August 2024 22:09 (one year ago)

wonder if she can get liz cheney and romney on board, but I honestly don't know if their word has any sway at this point. I think I said above, I suspect there is some contingent of republicans who are persuadable and who cannot fathom being the Trump Party any longer, but I have no idea if this is a measurable demographic.

"Republicans for Harris" is such a gross DC concept. Making it public that such a thing even exists is the campaign's first genuine fuckup. Reach out to every conceivable voter, absolutely, but you risk alienating actual Democratic voters of long standing by acting like crossover Republicans are somehow worth more to you.

It will make people suspicious that she's going to cave to Republicans on important issues.

I think you’re underrating the “we fucking hate Trump too and it’s a relief not to pretend otherwise” vibes at work. (Also thinking back to things like Colin Powell publicly endorsing Obama in 2008, etc.)

Allen (etaeoe), Sunday, 4 August 2024 23:47 (one year ago)

they have all sorts of these groups teachers for kamala car enthusiasts for harris etc if its just something like that its nbd, however there is a related issue which is that dem campaigns often get behind policies to appeal to the handful of republicans they can peel off over ones which would energize their base and pay off in bigtime turnout, a lot of people think this is dumb but these dems arent really doing it because theyre dumb theyre doing it because they genuinely favor the policies that moderate republicans like

there is a Cat Ladies For Harris call going on today and they have, like, 30,000 people on it. the woman behind it has a cat named Nutmegan Thee Stallion.

scott seward, Monday, 5 August 2024 00:04 (one year ago)

If Republicans want to support Harris, let them come in the front door like everybody else. But what they want most of all is for someone to pat them on the head and call them special.

its an all hands on deck kind of thing. cuzza the end of the world.

scott seward, Monday, 5 August 2024 00:07 (one year ago)

deliberately embracing a subset of republican-backed policies for the sole reason of peeling off republican voters is pretty much what democratic candidates do in swing districts or in states that lean further republican than democrat. you can argue against that approach on a number of grounds, especially since republicans have had noteworthy success in moving the Overton window by avoiding it.

the ultra-conservatives got there by organizing effectively, relentlessly primarying moderate republicans who embraced democrat-backed policies, and eventually winning elections against the moderates. It didn't hurt that there were multiple ultra-conservative billionaires bankrolling their organizing efforts. If you can scrape up one or two radical leftist billionaires to bankroll our side you might being doing all of us big favor! on second thought, never mind.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 5 August 2024 00:18 (one year ago)

id say over the last x number of years the vast majority of dem candidates have run well to the right of the average dem voter, and prob even longer than x because of the corporate influence, but now for the last x theres another force which is dem voters moving left while the party has moved left a little but not nearly as much, due to the fact of things being run by committed centrists pelosi et al who are doing things like primarying progressives in favor of corporate drones

Adin Ross says he's locked down an interview with Donald Trump as the former President continues campaigning for the upcoming election. He made the announcement during a livestream on Kick, which DJ Akademiks reposted on Instagram on Tuesday night.

"Officially locked in," he began. "We will have a livestream with President Donald Trump on August 5th and it's gonna be insane. It's gonna be probably around 1:00 PM, eastern time. Stay up to date on my socials but it's 100% locked in." From there, he added that he's happy to be in the situation. Further details on the stream remain unclear.

Many xposts: I'll give Kinzinger credit for at least following through on the never-Trump idea and saying he'll vote in a manner consistent with that. So many never-Trump Republicans completely negate that by weaseling out of the only commitment that will make that happen (including Romney and Cheney, I think, at least publically, though I'm not sure)--they say they haven't decided how they're going to vote, or they'll write someone in, or something else. Some get ridiculous; John Bolton says he is going to write in Dick Cheney.

clemenza, Monday, 5 August 2024 03:39 (one year ago)

just the fact that he was going to skin a 40 pound bear cub...i dunno. seems so sad.

i read the NYT story and the insane factoid was that his cousin wrote the original NYT story about the dead bear in central park. those Kennedys are everywhere.

"Indeed, the bear cub caused quite a stir when it was found in the park in 2014, as reported in The New York Times in an article coincidentally written by Tatiana Schlossberg, a reporter for The Times at that time, and the daughter of Mr. Kennedy’s first cousin Caroline Kennedy. A woman was walking her dog in Central Park when she noticed it lying under some bushes, partly concealed by an abandoned bicycle. The cub was 6 months old and 44 pounds."
"Ms. Schlossberg said on Sunday evening, “Like law enforcement, I had no idea who was responsible for this when I wrote the story.”
