golf was fantastic today. scheffler last round 9 birdie 62 to take gold despite putting like crap for the first 3 rounds. rahm 4 shot lead with 8 to play then bogey, bogey, par, double bogey choke. mcilroy 5 birdies in a row to get into medal position then dunking it in the water on 15. fleetwood took silver, matsuyama bronze.

looking frwd to the high jump later. love the swimming with the exception of the 1500m which bores the crap out of me in a way long distance track somehow doesn't.

a rower from harvard from alaska.

scott seward, Sunday, 4 August 2024 16:09 (one year ago)

lot of cycling is just ability to produce power, not too unusual to find people who have been converted from other sports, also people who have been converted from the online racing where you have a power meter on yr bike in yr living room and compete against other people in their living rooms, the converts tend not to be as good at maneuvering the bicycle tho

lag∞n, Sunday, 4 August 2024 16:11 (one year ago)

she started biking, like, 5 years ago and wasn't even supposed to be in this race today. the dutch must have eaten too much cheese last night.

scott seward, Sunday, 4 August 2024 16:13 (one year ago)

primoz roglic the most famous example converted from ski jumping which you dont need to produce a lot of power for kind weird to become one of the best cyclist of his generation, his achilles heel tho he crashes a lot which goes back to that not maneuvering the bicycle as good thing

lag∞n, Sunday, 4 August 2024 16:16 (one year ago)

btw, table tennis gold medalist fan zhendong got himself into a little controversy for being a swiftie earlier this year

The 27-year-old, who was once ranked number 1 the world, lost to his compatriot Lin Shidong, 18, at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Grand Smash earlier this month. The competition took place here, at the Singapore Sports Hub.

He was unable to proceed to the top 16 of the competition, and saw his position taken over by a fellow Chinese player, Wang Chuqin.

Not long after his defeat, a clip of Zhendong enjoying himself at Taylor Swift’s Singapore gig went viral on Chinese social media.

He was seen wearing colourful friendship bracelets, carrying Taylor Swift merch, and singing excitedly to her songs at the concert — just like any other Swiftie.

Unfortunately, Zhendong’s behaviour landed on the wrong side of the internet, seizing the attention of an angry hoard of netizens.

He was harshly criticised, with many saying he should have focused on training and not have taken time off to have fun.

Zhendong has since taken to Weibo to reflect on his loss, and defend himself against the naysayers.

“I bought a ticket from a reseller, and took three hours off my busy schedule two days before the competition to attend the event that all Swifties dreamt of going for. Music has no boundaries, and outstanding musicians such as Taylor Swift can bring others a sense of healing and confidence. I hope that more people can open their hearts to this feeling,” he wrote.

Zhendong continued: “In games, I am an athlete who has been nurtured by my country, and I’ve never slacked off in the 10 plus years when it comes to fighting for my country’s glory. In the limited personal time I have, I am but a normal young adult, with my own hobbies and relationships, and I will remain disciplined while staying true to myself."

congratulations to #1 swiftie fan zhendong!

scott seward, Sunday, 4 August 2024 17:43 (one year ago)

Loved China and US trading golds across the medleys. Great swim meet.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 4 August 2024 17:47 (one year ago)

See Taiwan beat China at the Badminton. Will have to see highlights of that.

And maybe table tennis.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 4 August 2024 17:47 (one year ago)

I just had to try and explain the Yusuf Dicek memes to my partner. It was non-trivial

In every track event ever...

Commentator: Watch out for the Jamaican athlete.

... regardless of whether they are any good or not apparently.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Sunday, 4 August 2024 18:39 (one year ago)

congratulations to #1 swiftie fan zhendong!

the long distance events are great, really loving these. the men’s 10,000m final was dramatic as hell yesterday. the women’s 800m semis just now were awesome. having a sport where 99% of the competition is kinda playing possum in anticipation of the final 1% being total chaos is a great idea

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 4 August 2024 19:10 (one year ago)

Philippines winning their second-ever (and third-ever) gold medal is a huge thing. The first was for weightlifting. My ex is with his family this weekend, and he told me that the entire room spontaneously rose and sang the anthem and his dad started crying when Yulo won. He told me that the government has pledged a free house to any medal winner. It's a big deal!
