The “selfless act” stuff does kind of make me grind my teeth. He was incredibly selfish not to drop out sooner or even to consider staying in. He was borderline forced out and could not realistically stay in in his condition. I get that maybe it’s sort of a formality to make the whole thing smoother but it’s a reminder of why I never want to work anywhere near politics.

re the conversation upthread as to whether bidens support of israels ongoing genocide is just typical american foreign policy, on some level obviously yes, the zionist project has had an aspect of genocide since before the creation of the state of israel and israel has been a very close ally of america for a long time, some might say as client state or cats paw, at the very least the countries ambitions towards fucking up the middle east are aligned, and on a wider scale the US is always bombing someone shipping weapons all over the world aligning with the worst governments doing all sorts of coercive extractive shit etc

the thing that really stood out for me about this particular thing is bidens obvious enthusiasm for it, seems like the single thing hes had the most enthusiasm for in his entire presidency, as soon as it started he the rest of the government just started dumping weapons in there, its instructive to contrast with the weapons supplied to ukraine where there are very particular rules about how they can be used theyre all tracked etc, they decided that israel can just have as many weapons as they want with no restrictions no tracking

then in the face of strong opposition from democratic voters he just did not wavier at all, a complete unwillingness to hold israel to account for even the things that one would think almost everyone could agree on like dont starve civilians, needless to say its been a very public parade of war crimes and all we got from him were bizarre speeches about how jews cant be safe in the world without the state of israel

we finally found the one thing that biden and the centrists believe in

will the prisoner swap help Harris in the long run? little early for an October surprise. Biden's retort ("why didn't he do it when he was president?") was the perfect response. Vance is out there already giving Trump credit for it.

I thought it was a little telling that Colbert opened his first post-shooting episode (a live one after the first night of the RNC) by giving a thoughtful condemnation of the act...and then went into some slightly softer than usual jokes about Trump being awful...and he was back to his old self by the live ep on Thursday after Trump's death march of an acceptance speech.
