agreed. I frankly just do not know enough about the bosnian genocide to have an opinion about some of the substantive criticisms in that thread. but this tweet in particular is emblematic of much of the blowback I’ve seen, and one of the reasons I feel so much despair when looking for intelligent discussion about thorny topics apart from like, literary journals months after the fact. just an baldly dishonest conclusion to draw

Yeah don't think Arnesa (who seems p good on things generally though I don't follow) would intentionally misgender..

Arnesa is a Bosnian genocide survivor and academic herself and certainly knows a lot more than “k3vin k” and though I agree that is not what the article intended (or for me landed), her prickliness is entirely understandable given how little understood the scale of the atrocity is and how much it is denied to this day.

People can just be wrong without applying intent to it, especially when dealing with a subject as emotive as the Bosnian genocide. I guess it’s easier to just call Arnesa a liar though, that’s surely a novel experience for her!

Afaict? Ethnic cleansing is done for land, with zero regard to those who live on it. There are millions of Palestinians; Israel cannot kill them all. It can however destroy housing and infrastructure on the Gaza Strip and make it unliveable.

Genocide is deliberate extermination of a group of people.

There’s a lot of overlap between the two terms: Bosnia arguably can fall into both categories. Rwanda was genocide. They’re both bad!

I should clarify upthread for “Why distinguish” is that when eventually the bombardment stops, Gaza will be largely uninhabitable. The majority of Palestinians will still be alive, but they won’t have a home to return to. That’s the goal of ethnic cleansing and why I specifically distinguished. Not to minimise anything that’s happening.
