WTF?: "Seinfeld"'s Michael 'Kramer' Richards in Weird-o-Rama Onstage Meltdown

No, my point re: mechanics is that in every other circumstance...

Fair enough, nabisco, and his outburst was alarming, though I've always thought of Richards as the kind of person I would avoid anyway due to plain weirdness, but the point that jaymc was making, I think, was that people are or are not mechanics in a much more concrete way than they are or are not racists. Everybody who's not a saint has said or thought something at somepoint in their lives that conflates indivduals with whole swathes of the population that share some historical or genetic similarity.

I also want to say that even as a mutt of European extraction, I don't understand the 'how come 'cracker' isn't as objectionable as nigger complaint'. First off, it strikes me as an argument for just the opposite: how come 'nigger' isn't as 'acceptable' as 'cracker'? Secondly, 'cracker' offends me but how can it be expected to carry the same threat of degradation, objectification, violence and oppression as 'nigger'? Implying I'm a racist by way of 'cracker' isn't the same thing as calling as referring to someone of African descent in a way that implies that they're hardly human and only good enough for servitude. Thirdly, it's not as if refraining from calling people hurtful epithets is based merely on some kind of racial truce. If calling me 'cracker' is tantamount to saying that I have carte blanche (see what I did there?) to say 'nigger' then it's special pleading by a racist, 'cause anyone else, without regard to the person's race, would say 'asshole'.

Lurker OTM, as usual.

i've seen semi-pro hockey games in mobile, alabama. it's not understandable to see why a game where 99.99999% of the participants are white would be sorta popular.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

popular among white people, i mean.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Probably for the same reason that rodeo isn't quite as popular in MN as it is in CO.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

"the Evil Other, people outside the social contract who Aren't Like Us who it's OK to hate" -- it's white people who do this

Fixed.

(It would be a shame if this was my only contribtion to the thread, but pretty much all of the rest of my views are "nabisco OTM". Hey, maybe that's what happened, Michael Richards had an fair and sensitive funny-till-it-hurts set all written, and Paul Rodrigeuz went on before him and stole it, leaving Richards to wander the untrodden paths...)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

pleasant plains what's the rzrbacks odds w/ the bcs? they pretty much screwed no matter what? "rodeo"s popular everywhere guys, garth brooks was like the biggest selling artist of the 90s.

It depends on how you define racism. I find myself sometimes jumping to conclusions about people based on how they look. For instance, I'm surprised when someone who looks very middle class and conventional turns out to like edgy music. Yes, I'm a racist in that sense. Are you?

I really want to hear "Rodeo" now. The only Garth I have in iTunes is "Thunder Rolls" - good, but no "Rodeo."

but yeah i mean rodeo's not like huge in rural mn like it is out west, but we always had one at the county fair when i was a kid, i would always get excited for it...i won a Rondo (obscure mountain dew-ish brand of pop) there once at the fair rodeo in a raffle.

Arkansas obviously has to win out. There's a certain danger in looking ahead to FLA in the SEC title game and getting beat Friday by LSU. And USC needs to get beat by somebody. The realistic expectation should ARK win out would be a Sugar Bowl game versus Notre Dame or even a rematch with USC.

Re: Letterman's audience and thier laughter.

His show gets taped at 4:00 PM EST. The audience is largley people who were standing in line to get in to the show and/or wandering around Manhattan doing tourist shit all day and not clicking "refresh" on tmz.com and reading 600 post threads on the topic. Even with a joke about it in the monologue or whatever, there's a good chance most people there really didn't know the context. And yeah, it was a super-weird idea to have his first public appearance be on Letterman, especially if they didn't fill the audience (both television and studio) in on what happened last week.

To me the saddest part is that I heard reports on the morning news today that when he returned to the club the following night, he was supposed to have made some kind of apology, but he didn't. He waited until Monday afternoon, and still seemed like he hadn't really come to terms with it himself. I may be reaching here, but it seems like he didn't realize what he did was so worng until the vieo was all over the internet and the half of the country that wasn't talking about OJ was talking about him.

Letterman did give an overview of the situation both in the monologue and in his conversation with Seinfeld before the interview w/Richards started. He just didn't really convey the severity of the offense--coulda been a "haha celebrity embarasses self" thing, in which case them coming on to apologize would be sorta funny, but since it was a string of racial epithets followed by a lynching reference it was actually kinda bad. So yeah, I think it's good that Seinfeld shushed 'em, but you're right that they probably didn't have a full understanding of the context.

Didn't Richards say something in his Letterman appearance about going back to the club and trying to make amends or something?
