Blows my mind it's twice as hot in Bakersfield as in LA (in celsius)
― nashwan, Sunday, 7 July 2024 15:01 (one year ago)
ConEd keeps texting and emailing me to tell me to reduce consumption during peak hours but, just as a particularly NYC-centric example, fuck off out of here until you dim the lights in Times Square and every corporate office that's air conditioned down to 57 degrees (on a SUNDAY, mind you).

to be fair, lots of corporate offices I'm sure don't want to pay extravagant power bills. They shut AC off in my building on Sunday.

I'm loving the heat in Portland (highs around 100 yesterday through Tuesday). Dry as a bone, not a cloud in the sky, air quality seems good.

It’s so hot in NYC that the Third Ave Bridge over the Harlem River can’t fully open/close because the heat has expanded the steel. We saw workers using a saw to shave part of the steel down & fire boats shooting water on the bridge to cool it down @nbcnewyork #nbc4ny #nyc #heat pic.twitter.com/lAxdyXNHEP— Jesse Hamilton (@JesseJHamilton) July 8, 2024

It’s 83 in New York right now so I’m not convinced but could be!

Improvised bridge maintenance seems like it could be problematic.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 8 July 2024 22:43 (one year ago)
i'm assuming it's not so much the high temp today (which is not that high) but the sustained heat of the last few weeks that has caused the bridge to accumulate enough heat to be stuck open?
― 龜, Monday, 8 July 2024 22:47 (one year ago)
ClickbaitIt’s really not that hot
― calstars, Monday, 8 July 2024 22:56 (one year ago)
balmy 75*F in Oakland right now, but it's supposed to heat up again later this week

Heard an NPR report about people showing up at the Vegas hospital with burns from the pavement.

Nice weather for July, if you're able to ignore the residual Beryl blasts and tornado warnings.

Yeah there's something unusually dispiriting about this recent NYC weather. Feels like being trapped in a hot soup. After a 15 minute walk I have to come home and hang dry my clothes.
― Josefa, Wednesday, 10 July 2024 20:09 (one year ago)
I think that (in a way) our 2024 summer weather is kinda what I imagined 2000 weather would be when it was like 1989 or 1990: just sheer misery
― Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 20:20 (one year ago)
I feel like the switch flipped on NYC summers about 5-8 years ago, where it went from 2-3 waves of hot and steamy weather over a summer (and just hot the rest of the time) to it being hot and steamy pretty much the entire summer.
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 20:23 (one year ago)
i must admit (to calstars) that it hasn't actually been crazy *hot* in nyc, but even mid-80s is a nightmare with humidity/dewpoints this high. can't imagine doing construction work in this
obviously the state governments of texas and florida have done a lot of awful shit lately, but preemtively banning local ordinances requiring breaks for workers in hot weather is among the most blatantly cruel (and racist)
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 10 July 2024 21:14 (one year ago)

― 龜, Thursday, 11 July 2024 14:08 (one year ago)
yesterday was finally, dramatically cooler in nyc - but only after 6 PM, when things settled down into the low 80s and there was a decent breeze.

My first world problem so far in NYC so far is having to see the P1 alert every six hours or so on the A/C and having to drag the unit over to the tub to drain it

Worried that maybe I emptied it over energetically and broke some part that is supposed to splash the water onto the fans for evaporation purposes
― Thrapple from the Apple (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 11 July 2024 17:24 (one year ago)
It’s awkward to drain those things, I usually get some water on the floor
― Josefa, Thursday, 11 July 2024 17:31 (one year ago)
Yeah, we used to use some combination of a dish and a cookie sheet slid underneath. I'd also make sure all filters/vents are clean. But ultimately I think those things are truly meant to work with a drain hose installed in the bottom, which was never a practical possibility in our apartment.
― the last visible dot (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 11 July 2024 17:57 (one year ago)
Cleaned all the filters a few days ago
― Thrapple from the Apple (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 11 July 2024 17:59 (one year ago)
At first I only did the top two and then I remembered or saw the other two
I used to drain mine every couple of months, but it wasn't our only air conditioner; we had two window units going — one in the bedroom and one in the office — at the same time. The "portable" (LOL; the thing weighed like 100 lbs and dragging it out of the basement every May, then dragging it back down in September, was the bane of my existence) unit was in the living room. Now I have just one AC — a big one in the main room of the apartment that keeps everything comfortable. Having thick double-glazed windows to keep the insane winter cold at bay (it was -30 for a week or so in January) also helps keep the place cool in summer, it seems.
