LOL just saw that as I perused around Diabolik (thanks to Ned's link) and, damn, that's a total must-have if the transfers are up to snuff

Rich E. (Eric H.), Thursday, 27 June 2024 19:00 (one year ago)

It's pretty much a must buy for me, even if it'll be my third version of Les Vampires (and the second of Fantomas and Judex).

Overtoun House windows (aldo), Thursday, 27 June 2024 21:55 (one year ago)

Also, that time of year again.

Oh god, it came a week too early this year! My payday isn't until next week :(

Rich E. (Eric H.), Friday, 28 June 2024 13:15 (one year ago)

It's OK, if you're in this thread, you already spend too much money on this habit

Nhex, Friday, 28 June 2024 13:30 (one year ago)

Indeed, I'm just going to get the Sembene box regardless, and probably at least 2 or 3 other titles

er...

lots there that i want to see but which never made it to Criterion UK releases.

confusingly the remake of 'Fires on the Plain' has a near identical cover.

koogs, Friday, 28 June 2024 13:33 (one year ago)

ah, mb. sorry

Nhex, Friday, 28 June 2024 14:04 (one year ago)

Finding it harder to justify some boxed sets now when I only want to see one or two films in the set. Right now I can't make my mind up about the Jean-Pierre Mocky and Erotic Ghost Story sets. It's a lot of money and I prefer to spend silly money on books I might never read

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 1 July 2024 22:00 (one year ago)

This new one from Vinegar Syndrome sure looks like something:

https://vinegarsyndrome.com/collections/frontpage/products/intrepidos-punks-vengeance-of-the-punks

The trailer, as you might guess, is rather NSFW (less nudity, more everything else):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuHhjCBAngQ

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 July 2024 22:08 (one year ago)

I got the Mocky set from Radiance in the mail with a couple of other films

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 1 July 2024 22:26 (one year ago)

Anyone going for Gaira's Guts Trilogy, in synopsis it doesn't sound like my kind of thing but a lot of people say they're special. I probably wont get it.

This person has made some lovely collages, and in some cases making the films look a lot better than they really are. I'm still ganting for the later Masahiro Shinoda films, c'mon boutique labels!

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 5 July 2024 15:01 (one year ago)

Interesting list of titles that Radiance couldn't get the rights for:

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 10 July 2024 12:39 (one year ago)

Demons is essential. It's a shame they couldn't get a license as I'd love to own it.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 13:06 (one year ago)

Broken Highway is one Ive wanted to see for a while now

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 13:48 (one year ago)

always wanted to see Ghosts... of the Civil Dead (because the first Woob track I ever heard samples it)

the absence of bikes (f. hazel), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 13:57 (one year ago)

Lightning by Naruse is such a good film too. I wish someone could do a big boxset of his films.

I'd really like to see The Mattei Affair from that list.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 14:14 (one year ago)

I always assumed that the Teddy Pendergrass songs in Choose Me were prohibiting its release. The MGM DVD has been OOP for years. I saw a beautiful 35mm print last year

beamish13, Wednesday, 10 July 2024 14:28 (one year ago)

good set of announcements from Radiance today (Daiei Gothic box, Haxan, Dogra Magra)
the email also said they are doing a Nagisa Oshima box next year

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 14:49 (one year ago)

Very happy to see Snow Woman, it's great (apart from the salt of the earth dad). Bride Of Hades is less great but I'm fond of Ko Nishimura. I've seen 4 or 5 versions of Yotsuya but never this one (it's from the same year as the most famous version). More!

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 10 July 2024 15:42 (one year ago)

I took the plunge on this one but mostly bc I dream of a giant hisayasu sato box and see supporting this as an incremental step towards that goal [I'm doing my part gif]

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Wednesday, 10 July 2024 21:31 (one year ago)

I wish someone could do a big boxset of his films.

I heard somewhere Arrow Academy's release was the lowest seller they ever had...

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 11 July 2024 09:27 (one year ago)

There was this DVD box set from Masters of Cinema, long out of print:

https://www.leninimports.com/pages/naruse_box_set_volume_one_masters_of_cinema_series_uk_dvd.html

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 11 July 2024 09:31 (one year ago)

yeah that's really expensive to get second hand. I do have a 3 film bfi set though and floating clouds new blu-ray arrived last week

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 11 July 2024 09:50 (one year ago)

Film4 showed all 3 of the films from the old BFI box set so i have those on pvr at least. but would like to be able to buy more, he seems under-released compared to the others of the same ilk

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mikio-Naruse-Collection-Hideko-Takamine/dp/B000WM9WL4/ref=sr_1_7

'When a Woman Ascends the Stairs' (1960)
'Floating Clouds' (1955)
'Late Chrysanthemums' (1958)

koogs, Thursday, 11 July 2024 10:09 (one year ago)

not a lot of Mizoguchi available either, there have been a few boxes before but they are long out of print and getting very pricey

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 11 July 2024 10:27 (one year ago)

that was actually the second release of those eight, my slipcase is different (and £36 at the time). plus they were all available as pairs before the box was released (i have a copy of sansho dayo that i bought before). this and the bfi kurosawa dvds are basically what kickstarted my japanese dvd collection.

there was an 'early' mizoguchi box of 4 films as well (£17 at the time)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004SXSRS2/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s01

koogs, Thursday, 11 July 2024 10:37 (one year ago)

Sadly I don't have £360 for the mizoguchi

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 11 July 2024 13:35 (one year ago)

Very excited about a Nagisa Oshima box. I just saw The Man Who Left His Will on Film in 35mm. Hope it includes Band of Ninja and The Catch

beamish13, Thursday, 11 July 2024 13:41 (one year ago)

haha, I just checked and I have the Mizoguchi box set. I know I certainly didnt pay as much as that for it.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 11 July 2024 14:02 (one year ago)

Severin summer sale active - https://severinfilms.com/

Nhex, Friday, 12 July 2024 22:38 (one year ago)

This is probably the best sale, price-wise, that I've seen them do any time recently - lots of $8 blus

Nhex, Friday, 12 July 2024 22:41 (one year ago)

Drowning by Numbers for less than $10 is an unbelievable bargain. Brilliant, beautiful film. Peter Medak’s The Changeling and Clear Cut are musts, too

beamish13, Saturday, 13 July 2024 00:53 (one year ago)

Overboard for $5

the absence of bikes (f. hazel), Saturday, 13 July 2024 04:17 (one year ago)

an icon of a worried-looking, long-haired, bespectacled man (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 15 July 2024 00:23 (one year ago)

So I went through Indicator's Universal Noir Vol.2 box, and it features a comedy (Lady On A Train), a gothic melodrama (Time Out Of Mind), a Casablanca-inspired adventure film (Singapore), a very British Aldous Huxley adaptation (A Woman's Vengeance) and two social problem films (The Lady Gambles and An Act Of Murder, the latter of which also doubles as a courtroom melodrama). Some of these entries have noir elements (if Singapore was in more solid company I could see it as a noir), but as a group they are def not film noir.

It seems boutique labels have decided that anything produced in the US between the end of WWII and the 60's counts as "noir" as long as it's in black and white.

Which is disappointing because it raises false expectations, but at the same time I guess if that's the only way for these films to get decent editions it's a necessary evil? Don't think anyone will do a Women's Pictures set anytime soon for instance...and even actor-based releases are mostly a thing of the past, I do remember some recent ones (Cushing Curiosities, Box Of Burt) but nothing compared to the DVD era of the Signature Collection where every major classic Hollywood actor had a set. Don't know that some of the ones in Universal Noir Vol.2 should be anyone's priority tho.

Word has come down that the following Studio Canal titles featured in Kino Lorber's While Supplies Last Sale (https://kinolorber.com/collection/while-supplies-last-sale) will be removed from the site on the 23rd due to expired licenses.

Accident
And Hope to Die
Britannia Hospital
Buffet Froid
The Caper of the Golden Bulls
The Captive Heart
The Chicken Chronicles
Connecting Rooms
The Criminal
The Deadly Trap
Diabolically Yours
Dog Day
Don't Drink the Water
Dr. Who and the Daleks
Dr. Who - Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.
Emmanuelle 2
Go Go Mania AKA Pop Gear
Goodbye Emmanuelle
Helas Pour Moi
Leon Morin, Priest
The Long and the Short and the Tall
A Man, a Woman and a Bank
La Marseillaise
The Mind Benders
The Monster
Morgan, A Suitable Case for Treatment
Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud
The Night My Number Came Up
Not for Publication
Old Boyfriends
Perfect Friday
Pool of London
A Pure Formality
Quai des Orfèvres
The Raging Moon
Slayground
The Sound Barrier
A Sunday in the Country
Sweeney! | Sweeney 2 - Double Feature
The Third Lover

If you're R1-locked and interested in any of these, you might want to pick 'em up now at these prices, because while these titles will remain in stock at other retailers (as supplies last), Kino themselves will have to destroy their remaining stock after the 23rd (as opposed to dumping them on liquidators). This is likely your last shot at grabbing many of these in R1.

an icon of a worried-looking, long-haired, bespectacled man (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 15 July 2024 16:18 (one year ago)

I grabbed Slayground in a previous sale - maybe i'll get those Dr. Who movies

Nhex, Monday, 15 July 2024 16:26 (one year ago)

That Arrow sale is mega!!

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 15 July 2024 17:44 (one year ago)

are you being redirected to the uk, tracer? because the uk one is twice as big (over 650 titles it says)

but because of these perpetual sales i'm almost running out of things from my wants lost

koogs, Monday, 15 July 2024 18:02 (one year ago)

list. almost

koogs, Monday, 15 July 2024 18:03 (one year ago)

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 15 July 2024 19:15 (one year ago)

HMV/Fopp have a sale with almost all the in print BFI Flipsides at 2 for £15 including the ones going out of print very soon. Also includes a couple of worthwhile others such as the HMV exclusive Premium Editions of House of Wax and Satanic Rites of Dracula.

Severin's third euro Gothic box is the weakest so far, only Night of the Walking Dead was really any fun.

I was double dipping on all the films, but the Curzon Collection Peter Strickland box is beautiful. One of three badges in it, imo I got the best one (a cabbage with a knife through it). Only real downside is that the posters are really crisply folded, and the obi is very, very tight and I can see it breaking.

Also in double dipping, I got the new Pete Walker set to replace the Anchor Bay coffin box which has glowered at me every night to watch House of Whipcord.

I looked through the Severin sale and had everything I was tempted by. I'll look at the Black Emannuelle set more times but I'm not buying it until it's under $150 (which is a shared opinion among the people who didn't preorder it in a Severin FB group I'm in)

Overtoun House windows (aldo), Tuesday, 16 July 2024 09:35 (one year ago)

House of Whipcord is great! But I don't feel the need to upgrade my Walker coffin box.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 16 July 2024 12:42 (one year ago)

House of Mortal Sin is my favourite if I'm honest. Also it's a nice copy of Flesh And Blood Show which is how I justified it to myself.

After picking up the Stanley Long set in a sale and thoroughly enjoying it, I'm looking forward immensely to the Confessions set next month. In a linked vein, the Pete Walker sexploitation box is pretty damn good. I wasn't that familiar with any of the films beyond reputation but they're all great in their own way.

Overtoun House windows (aldo), Tuesday, 16 July 2024 15:29 (one year ago)

two weeks pass...

Curzon putting out a really nice Bela Tarr bluray box in the UK - Family Nest (1979), The Outsider (1981), The Prefab People (1982), Autumn Almanac (1984), Damnation (1988) - New 4K Restoration, Sátántangó (1994) - 4K Restoration, Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) - New 4K Restoration, The Man From London (2007), The Turin Horse (2011)
also releasing a separate 4K of Werckmeister, feels scummy that it is not in the box, but apparently they've done this before with their Wenders & Trier sets. booooo.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 31 July 2024 15:29 (one year ago)

Amazon and Dawn of the Disks both saying the Werckmeister4k is in there as far as I can see.

Overtoun House windows (aldo), Wednesday, 31 July 2024 18:36 (one year ago)

I am probably in for it either way though.

Umbrella announce vol 2 of Ozploitation rarities, #1 only turned up the other week.

Overtoun House windows (aldo), Wednesday, 31 July 2024 18:42 (one year ago)

nah I think they are saying the one in the box is from the new 4K restoration downsampled to bluray

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 31 July 2024 18:43 (one year ago)

tbh it's all kind of confusing, I mean when they say "from a new 4K scan" ... yes but from a scan of what?
