this story is such a nightmare. and its just one of many. people you've known for years - friends! - just turning on you in the weirdest way possible.

ha, was just sharing that. a Trump-flag flying election official in a county that went 82% for Trump in 2020.

They blamed “undercover activists” for stealing ballots out of machines with hot dog tongs.

it is like religion and you can't really fight religion or change someone's mind about anything when they are in that deep. so, i don't know what the answer is. i kinda figured people were looking for a new religion here but i didn't think it would involve voting machines.

I've seen these people at 7-11 at the hot dog station. They're scary!

I get it (and everything else) but what I also get from that story is that they were only able to rustle up so many voters and half of them were clearly not there one way or another. It's weaponized crankery from people who deserve no excuse, but thinking this elderly widow leading the failed recall is just going to spend more of her time and energy on this only to keep losing provides a certain grim satisfaction. That's how you want to spend the rest of your days? You're going to be surprised at just how many more people you're going to alienate along the way.

Sometimes I wonder if they are actually all that surprised. I think many of these in-deep cranks want, on a certain level, to be alienated by friends and family because it only further confirms, in their twisted minds, that they are one of the few "right" ones who truly "get it". Whether they will come to regret this on their deathbeds will remain to be seen, but I think the alienation is welcome because it justifies the crazy.

They may never. But I suspect they're as bone-deep insecure as Trump himself, and feel it even if they don't articulate it, even to themselves. They have to be right, to 'get it,' because otherwise that's a bit of a howling void there, and they know it.

To them this is a kind of religious service. On their deathbeds they will probably just wish they had fought harder for Trump.

i don't know why i keep being surprised by people here. millions of people believe that a fictitious God is going to come down from the sky and kill everyone who doesn't believe in him or whatever the fuck is supposed to happen so people believing that voting machines can be controlled by cell phones isn't really that nuts. my apologies crazy america. maybe you are actually getting MORE reasonable.

I wondered this when I overheard a conversation in a card room that was like "Biden's gonna win, I'll tell you that right now, they'll make it happen" and I wondered the same. it would be really funny if Trump's rhetoric around the 2020 election actually did have the effect of supressing his own turnout in 2024

I'm putting this in the politics thread because it's fucking political. It's an article about the suicide rate in Montana (gift link), which is the highest in the country and only exacerbated by our gun laws, which amount to, "Would you like a gun? Here, have a gun." It's a tough read, but worthwhile.
