this story is such a nightmare. and its just one of many. people you've known for years - friends! - just turning on you in the weirdest way possible.

scott seward, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:10 (two years ago)

ha, was just sharing that. a Trump-flag flying election official in a county that went 82% for Trump in 2020.

bulb after bulb, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:13 (two years ago)

They blamed “undercover activists” for stealing ballots out of machines with hot dog tongs.

A So-Called Pulitzer price winner (President Keyes), Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:23 (two years ago)

it is like religion and you can't really fight religion or change someone's mind about anything when they are in that deep. so, i don't know what the answer is. i kinda figured people were looking for a new religion here but i didn't think it would involve voting machines.

scott seward, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:24 (two years ago)

I've seen these people at 7-11 at the hot dog station. They're scary!

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:24 (two years ago)

Some Lynch-ian photos in that story

A So-Called Pulitzer price winner (President Keyes), Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:25 (two years ago)

"The county had such a nonchalant, trusting relationship with elections that once, after two candidates tied for commissioner in 2002, they settled the race by drawing from a deck of cards. But now two decades later, Elgan was being flooded by emails asking about the license plate numbers of her poll workers and the temperature data of her equipment storage room."

scott seward, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:27 (two years ago)

I don't know if I can read that story. These people are in so deep.

a (waterface), Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:28 (two years ago)

They have this quantum box they put the votes into and they can go either way when you open it

A So-Called Pulitzer price winner (President Keyes), Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:28 (two years ago)

I get it (and everything else) but what I also get from that story is that they were only able to rustle up so many voters and half of them were clearly not there one way or another. It's weaponized crankery from people who deserve no excuse, but thinking this elderly widow leading the failed recall is just going to spend more of her time and energy on this only to keep losing provides a certain grim satisfaction. That's how you want to spend the rest of your days? You're going to be surprised at just how many more people you're going to alienate along the way.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:36 (two years ago)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/06/06/black-voters-2024-election-biden-trump/

“It’s really hard to vote because neither candidate is good. Biden is too old. Trump is too racist"

do people really think Biden is that much older than Trump?

Heez, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:41 (two years ago)

You're going to be surprised at just how many more people you're going to alienate along the way.

Sometimes I wonder if they are actually all that surprised. I think many of these in-deep cranks want, on a certain level, to be alienated by friends and family because it only further confirms, in their twisted minds, that they are one of the few "right" ones who truly "get it". Whether they will come to regret this on their deathbeds will remain to be seen, but I think the alienation is welcome because it justifies the crazy.

They may never. But I suspect they're as bone-deep insecure as Trump himself, and feel it even if they don't articulate it, even to themselves. They have to be right, to 'get it,' because otherwise that's a bit of a howling void there, and they know it.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:44 (two years ago)

To them this is a kind of religious service. On their deathbeds they will probably just wish they had fought harder for Trump.

A So-Called Pulitzer price winner (President Keyes), Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:48 (two years ago)

i don't know why i keep being surprised by people here. millions of people believe that a fictitious God is going to come down from the sky and kill everyone who doesn't believe in him or whatever the fuck is supposed to happen so people believing that voting machines can be controlled by cell phones isn't really that nuts. my apologies crazy america. maybe you are actually getting MORE reasonable.

A So-Called Pulitzer price winner (President Keyes), Thursday, 6 June 2024 19:02 (two years ago)

I am curious if the loons who are so paranoid about their vote being changed will just not vote? And will that be a significant number of people?

I wondered this when I overheard a conversation in a card room that was like "Biden's gonna win, I'll tell you that right now, they'll make it happen" and I wondered the same. it would be really funny if Trump's rhetoric around the 2020 election actually did have the effect of supressing his own turnout in 2024

frogbs, Thursday, 6 June 2024 19:11 (two years ago)

Anytime someone says "make it happen" I sing Mariah Carey, can't help it.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 6 June 2024 19:14 (two years ago)

Trump put up a post recently encouraging mail-in votes, so presumably there's some vague recognition that the rhetoric may not have had a beneficial effect

lol I like it, I mean it's totally disengenuous since it's pretty doubtful Trump has ever even fired a gun but I like forcing the chuds to think about it

frogbs, Thursday, 6 June 2024 20:07 (two years ago)

Mixing in some disingenuous or technically false stuff is good because it invites a rebuttal and a rebuttal necessary requires repeating the allegation. “Convicted rapist” would be even better.

in a way, it doesn't get any more American than this! #bestspringsteensongever

"In a second message, from late on the night of Oct. 14, Mr. Biden acknowledged he was “sleeping on a car” and “smoking crack” behind the minor league baseball stadium in Wilmington, after buying drugs from a dealer named Mookie."

scott seward, Thursday, 6 June 2024 22:24 (two years ago)

Seriously he’s more representative of america and americans than trump is

He's completely devalued the process! I don't know why any of his most ardent supporters would even bother if they truly think it's all a sham (yes, I know cognitive dissonance is a thing but still).

Great-Tasting Burger Perceptions (Old Lunch), Thursday, 6 June 2024 23:05 (two years ago)

I kind of think Biden should show up at Hunter’s trial and act like a dad. I assume republicans would lose their shit about a president “influencing” a judicial matter, but to most ppl he would look like a dad that loves his kid. Contrast that with Trump who calls his 4 year old kid a loser

Has there been any polling amongst black people that shows this as a particular issue? Not asking sarcastically

That’s interesting but not really indicative of where it stands as a priority for black voters

Reached for comment about the video, a spokesperson for Kari Lake told the Guardian: “The Kari Lake campaign does not respond to British propaganda outlets. We stopped doing that in 1776.”

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 7 June 2024 23:49 (two years ago)

I'm putting this in the politics thread because it's fucking political. It's an article about the suicide rate in Montana (gift link), which is the highest in the country and only exacerbated by our gun laws, which amount to, "Would you like a gun? Here, have a gun." It's a tough read, but worthwhile.

Honestly the bit there that gave me a little hope was the preacher basically going "Yeah, you can't just pray it away."
