Cannon is slow-walking it in the guise of being cautious, is how I see it. I don't think she's stupid.

I get really sick of seeing her picture with that vacant smile

Dan S, Thursday, 30 May 2024 23:39 (two years ago)

I think this a good article about her from a reporter for the NYT who doesn't seem to be really able to express his opinion (gifted)

pretty funny the range of opinion on cable news as to whether this is bad for trumps political outlook runs from no to wait and see, i think its bad for him personally

Who knows how this will impact his chances but for right now I’m gonna enjoy the same peaceful easy feeling I had each time he got his ass indicted.

On Fox News earlier, apparently:

Jesse Watters: How involved was Trump in his own defense?

Todd Blanche: Very involved. We made every decision together

I encourage this approach and ask them to keep at it.

mookieproof, Friday, 31 May 2024 02:15 (two years ago)

its wild like this really is a moment that'll be taught in classrooms, an ex-president and CURRENT nominee just ate 34 felony counts, it's all part of American history now. at the same time it's such an utterly insane story, like imagine beaming that back to the '90s....President Donald Trump became the first president in history to be a convicted felon when he illegally covered up a hush money payment to a porn star. if that was the plot to say a random South Park episode it would be considered too absurd to even be political

frogbs, Friday, 31 May 2024 02:17 (two years ago)

That these offenses are so far down on his list of horrible acts is pretty wild, too. Whatever it takes, I guess.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Friday, 31 May 2024 02:29 (two years ago)

yeah such an avoidable one for him too like all he has to do is pay her with his own money and everything's kosher right? but nah because it's Trump he's using campaign funds and faking paperwork turning what must be incredibly common and rarely charged misdemeanors into felonies. THATS what gets him while the sedition and classified docs stuff may never even get tried. I mean yeah whatever it takes

frogbs, Friday, 31 May 2024 02:36 (two years ago)

excited to see chait's reaction

'yes, every non-millionaire in america would also have been convicted of these charges, but to we really want to set this sort of precedent for important people?'

mookieproof, Friday, 31 May 2024 02:37 (two years ago)

xp exactly, it is so dumb

just saw Renato Mariotti talking abt the verdict on PBS Newshour, and he caught himself after saying "allegedly" and gleefully corrected himself to say "proven to have", it was really a joyous moment

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Friday, 31 May 2024 02:45 (two years ago)

he also pointed out that people in NY that are convicted of this do not typically get jail time, which is fair enough I guess altho I want BLOOD

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Friday, 31 May 2024 02:46 (two years ago)

I mean it's so dumb it legitimately scares me a little, like I can get if this was just a stupid time in American history but we're actually deciding as a country whether or not to elect him AGAIN, and polls are showing that it's somehow really close!! doesn't feel like something a nation can recover from without toppling over somehow. like we just live in the chaos realm now. oh and by the way it was also revealed today that there are tapes of Trump using the n-word

Countdown To Him Actually Saying It At A Rally...

an icon of a worried-looking, long-haired, bespectacled man (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 31 May 2024 02:54 (two years ago)

Roffle:

Donald Trump’s campaign is sending a blunt message to down ballot Republicans who are looking to fundraise for themselves off of the ex-president’s conviction: Back off.

Trump’s political operation views the guilty verdict in the New York hush money trial as a small-dollar goldmine — so much so that they are warning other Republicans not to raise money off it and siphon off money that could otherwise go to the Trump campaign.

“Any Republican elected official, candidate or party committee siphoning money from President Trump’s donors are no better than Judge Merchan’s daughter,” said Trump co-campaign manager Chris LaCivita. “We’re keeping a list, we’ll be checking it twice and we aren’t in the spirit of Christmas.”

Ned Raggett, Friday, 31 May 2024 02:59 (two years ago)

Late to the party, traveling all day, although I was apprised of the news by a phone call from my gleeful uncle shouting "34 COUNTS! GUILTY!" I'm now properly equipped with a Oaxacan negroni, with a side of schadenfreude. People can spin it however they want, "convicted felon" stings and he's unhappy about it. Good enough for me.

true but Cohen already got sentenced to jail for his role in this, also Trump shit talk the judge AND HIS FAMILY constantly, generally that means they go pretty hard on you. plus what other kind of punishment would at all be meaningful? a fine he won't pay? community service he won't serve? probation or house arrest where he'd just get exemptions to do everything he normally would anyway? at the same time the act of throwing a current presidential nominee in jail in the middle of a campaign is such a significant step, probably something you just can't do for the health of the nation, though I 100% wanna see them try

Also (and lets dare to dream) all those contempt findings are banked so it can be ‘in light of your behavior in this process…’ he just goes in the clink pending appeal. Also he’s totally going to rip the jury at some point in the next week

"at the same time the act of throwing a current presidential nominee in jail in the middle of a campaign is such a significant step"

I 100% get that but hopefully Merchan is aware that Trump and the entire GOP won't hesitate to throw him in jail for his role in this trial given the opportunity.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Friday, 31 May 2024 03:18 (two years ago)

"the opportunity" being Trump getting reelected

it is happening

Trump says he's the victim of political prosecutions hatched by Biden/Dems.

Important to note: Hunter Biden goes on trial Monday on federal gun charges (rarely tried in court) brought by a Trump-appointed prosecutor, overseen by a Trump-appointed judge, under a Biden DOJ.

I'm not giving any creedence to Trump's "election interference" claims, I mean this is why you don't nominate a dude who's been charged with a hundred felonies to be PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, but obviously it's about way more than Trump, it's the political future of this country, there are so many things that hinge on this, I really don't know what you do here, I kinda fear the fact that we even have to ask means it's over for us

re: jail time

https://mitchellepner.substack.com/p/donald-trump-found-guilty-on-all

What Is The Typical Sentence For These Offenses?

In my training and experience, the typical sentence for a non-violent, non-drug, first-offender convicted of an E felony in NY is probation. There have been similar defendants sentenced to prison. My friend Diana Florence (who spent more than 25 years as an Assistant DA in Manhattan) tried and convicted many other white collar criminals in similar cases. She has been telling me (and the press) that she thinks a prison sentence is warranted and may be imposed (https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/28/trump-merchan-sentencing-prison-00151613)

Can Justice Merchan Consider Trump’s Contempts Of Court?

Yes, Justice Merchan can consider Donald Trump’s 11 contempts of court in determining what sentence to impose. Justice Merchan can consider any factor in deciding what sentence to impose, other than forbidden categories such as race, gender, religion, etc.

In fact, Justice Merchan is required to consider the need for specific deterrence and general deterrence. “Specific deterrence” means imposing a sentence that prevents Donald Trump from committing the same crimes again. “General deterrence” means imposing a sentence that cautions the general public against committing these crimes.

“General deterrence” means imposing a sentence that cautions the general public against committing these crimes.

that's what gets me most about this thing, it's just such a bad example for the kids

frogbs, Friday, 31 May 2024 03:33 (two years ago)

"“Mr Trump, it’s important to understand that the last thing I want to do is to put you in jail. You are the former president of the United States and possibly the next president, as well,” Merchan said on 6 May, when he issued a $1,000 fine holding Trump in contempt of court for the 10th time. He went on to explain why putting Trump in jail at that time was “truly a last resort for me … I also worry about the people who would have to execute that sanction: the court officers, the correction officers, the Secret Service detail, among others. I worry about them and about what would go into executing such a sanction."

But keep up the prosecutions, he might get a heart attack.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 31 May 2024 10:18 (two years ago)

I've not read the graun piece, but I thought that Merchan quote was referring to the logistical problems of banging him up in the courthouse cell for his continuous gag order violations. He probably isn't going to jail but sentencing decisions on Trump who is now a confirmed felon, the ex-pres stuff shouldn't really be a factor.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 31 May 2024 10:25 (two years ago)

Sure, I thought that piece was ok on giving the logistics of "how does a former president go to jail".
