Yep. Word of mouth doesn’t exist any more.

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 27 May 2024 14:06 (two years ago)

yeah, this conversation about "underperforming" movies like this, Challengers and The Fall Guy reads like an industry circle jerk.

Yep. Word of mouth doesn’t exist any more.

― Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand),

oh I don't know. I suspect Civil War and Challeners have hung on -- the AMC multiplex where I'm watching Furiosa has all-day screenings for Challengers -- because of word of mouth.

The action direction is good, but I tended to like the simpler action sequences the most (the opening chase is so great). The most intriguing moments for me are the ones where we escape the vast open of the wasteland and see the creative and freaky stuff happening in the gaps. Guy reproducing Hylas and the Nymphs. Old lady promising peace in the depths under the Citadel. I love that kind of detail.

jmm, Monday, 27 May 2024 14:27 (two years ago)

For me the real treat was watching young/grown Furiosa process the world around her with only her eyes and sussing out what she's feeling.

There's one great, subtle moment when the rig is attacked and Furiosa's just done the bobbyknocker and she curls her lip a bit, having enjoyed the adrenaline rush, only to be brought back to Earth by seeing the dead War Pup.

in the Green Place she probably received ample survivalist training from the other Vulvalini, but since nobody really ever stumbled upon their encampment, never was exposed to the nihilistic butchery that was present elsewhere in the world and is slowly traumatized over and over again

Iacocca Cola (Neanderthal), Monday, 27 May 2024 14:36 (two years ago)

that was fine, in many respects it was very good – the politics and rhetorical flourishes of warlord culture are great, the imminent social danger in Gas Town, the scenes at the Bullet Farm - all comprise a really cogent and vivid science fiction vision. but compared to Fury Road, which is pretty much a single action bungee cord of a movie, the action here feels more like (great) set pieces, and the pace never really clicked into gear for me. co-ordination of action, stage management, editing all still fantastic. Really hope he gets to do a third.

^^ pretty much sums it up for me

Ippei's on a bummer now (WmC), Monday, 27 May 2024 15:46 (two years ago)

i love a movie that’s slow and deliberate and operating on a tremendous scale and i honestly had to pee the whole time but i felt like i couldn’t miss any of the images the movie was offering up. george miller’s phantom menace (you know i mean this as a compliment). really felt this one in my heart instead of my nerves

ivy., Monday, 27 May 2024 16:02 (two years ago)

also there were very young children at my screening and they all fucking loved it

Lol my mother said "there's another F&F movie already?" When I told her I was seeing Furiosa.

She thought I said Furiouser

No idea the Tory from The Souvenir was capable of this.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:11 (two years ago)

Crazy detail: this dude in Dementus's horde is named Rizzdale Pell, which is apparently a reference to two infamous Australian Catholic priests (Ridsdale and Pell).

jmm, Monday, 27 May 2024 17:12 (two years ago)

This was terrific, for me a more fulfilling experience than the last one. Miller's one of the great directors of crowds. And what an eye for perverse images.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:22 (two years ago)

Xpost Same actor also played Immortan Joe in the film due to Hugh Keayes-Byrne's passing in 2020

Hell of a gig.

Iacocca Cola (Neanderthal), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:24 (two years ago)

Also played Orson Welles in MANK.
He still looks like Welles.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:29 (two years ago)

enjoyed, tho the length is uh lengthy. with both this and dune 2, i feel like directors need to understand pacing and duration better or be more forgiving to the viewer.

at one point the bikes and rods were spiraling endlessly around and i was like ok this is some modern day esther williams shit

Film never really felt long to me though?

Weirdly Fury Road felt longer to me due to its heft but it's a half hour shorter.

FR is the better film in my eyes but I think a large part of that is the novel nature of it. We didn't have MM for 30 years, had no idea where Max would be airdropped or who the baddies would be, whereas here we're restricted to the same baddies from last film but younger and "new" baddie from the 2015 video game.

I do think the emotional heft and payoff were more effective in Fury Road but I was pleased with Miller continuing to let Furiosa do it with her eyes and body language rather than dialogue

Iacocca Cola (Neanderthal), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:45 (two years ago)

Do kinda like finding out that the mountainbike gang from FR was basically a splinter group that came from disgruntled members of Dementus's crew.

Iacocca Cola (Neanderthal), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:47 (two years ago)

this could’ve been longer and i wouldn’t have minded at all

ivy., Monday, 27 May 2024 17:52 (two years ago)

Not proud to say I've already seen thrice

Iacocca Cola (Neanderthal), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:53 (two years ago)

I complained about the length before I saw it. Except for one of those throne room scenes it didn't drag a bit.

idk I don't go to these things for emotional heft: I go for dogs carrying human feet in their mouths.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:56 (two years ago)

I'm all about the motorcycles in this one

Iacocca Cola (Neanderthal), Monday, 27 May 2024 17:58 (two years ago)

Furiosa's mom shifting the gas can and wheel from her previous bike so she can pursue in much faster powerful bike is my fav

DO THE BOBBYKNOCKER

Iacocca Cola (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 28 May 2024 02:55 (two years ago)

also there were very young children at my screening and they all fucking loved it

some parents brought an 8-year-old boy, a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old girl to the IMAX screening I saw today

which highlighted how MUCH more gore there is in this one than Fury Road

bae (sic), Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:11 (two years ago)

Yeah, I'm no prude but as I was walking out I caught a similar such family and was kinda like "woah, how very progressive!" Lol

H.P, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:40 (two years ago)

Reveal your uncool conservative beliefs itt: 12yo is the age limit I'd put on taking my hypothetical children to this movie, and even then I might second guess the decision

Burke was absolutely fantastic in this

H.P, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 04:41 (two years ago)

I would not let my very smart, grounded, avid reader 9yo, watch Furiosa, let alone this.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 28 May 2024 06:43 (two years ago)

what about Furiosa though?

bae (sic), Tuesday, 28 May 2024 07:30 (two years ago)

Also, was Hemsworth channeling...Heath Ledger?

there was one specific point when i thought this… the initial negotiation with Immortan Joe I think, where he “forgets” the code to stop Gas Town exploding.

Fizzles, Tuesday, 28 May 2024 07:33 (two years ago)

at times Burke looks like Robert Palmer.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 May 2024 09:23 (two years ago)

Amusing that I mainly know Burke as “the guy from The Souvenir” when that doesn’t even appear in the “Films” summary of his Wikipedia page.
