the way he brought up the furlough scheme yesterday seemed desperate, it was almost like he was inferring he paid it all out of his own pocket.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 23 May 2024 09:05 (two years ago)

it was like in the manner of a slimy boss giving you a tiny inconsequential pay rise and then never letting you forget about it

The only time the guy was popular is when he gave lots of people money.

a furlough scheme that was actually proposed and pushed for by McDonnell iirc and which sunak was originally dead set against…

and a furlough scheme which deliberately excluded hundreds of thousands of self-employed people, my wife being among them

xp
to me there's no question that if Corbyn and McDonnell hadn't been at the despatch box in early 2020 we would never have got the furlough measures we did get, flawed as they were

glumdalclitch, Thursday, 23 May 2024 12:08 (two years ago)

Quietly impressed by The Green Party response here. Has the right people crying about it.

Nothing to see here. Just @TheGreenParty⁩ leader on Radio 4 failing to condemn one of her fellow Green candidates for liking a post which said "we have to destroy Zionism". And she has the chutzpah to refer to the EHRC report into Labour's antisemitism to boot. What a state. pic.twitter.com/QrAo4fynZz

A more abstract approach would be better: "vote Labour, you get Starmer as pm" with Starmer getting a Starmer mask yanked off, revealing that this confirms that he is indeed Starmer.

So many Labour supporters online seem to be apoplectic about Corbyn's decision to stand as an indie and his resulting expulsion from the LP. Why?
You'd think they'd be happy he's out of the party and they now have the chance to win the seat for Starmer's Labour? What gives?

glumdalclitch, Friday, 24 May 2024 15:35 (two years ago)

only Islington North betting I've seen quoted was from William Kedjanyi who had made Corbyn the 8/13 fav, but was from before the stuffed suit challenger was unveiled.

Mark G, Friday, 19 June 2026 11:35 (yesterday)

...but already it was impossible to say which was which

calzino, Friday, 19 June 2026 11:58 (yesterday)

I'm sorry but wtf at the insinuations about Caroline Lucas in this thread - she was the driving force behind the Greens becoming a proper left-wing party in the first place. Go read their manifesto from that time: she's a fucking socialist. And a damn good local MP who consistently showed up. Just b/c you disagree with her on whether or not to stand aside, you can't go and rewrite her entire history to suit your own narrative.

emil.y, Friday, 19 June 2026 12:51 (yesterday)

don't you remember her pioneering proposed government of national unity during the Brexit negotiations? which was completely comprised of appalling politicians, and featured no left-wing politicians, all white polit6icians - just centrists and conservatives - but they were all women - just no Diane Abbot. I have been around long enough to know what her politics are about and her distaste for the left-wing entryism that has boosted the Green Party has been plain to see.

calzino, Friday, 19 June 2026 13:04 (yesterday)

As the one who linked to her post I object to Lucas saying this is a resounding defeat for the far right when Burnham has indicated he would largely carry on Starmer and Mahmood's migration policies during that campaign. Even if (for augument's sake) he is lying about it to get elected for that seat.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 19 June 2026 13:12 (yesterday)

So, 4 days to the 10th anniversary of the Brexit vote.

Mark G, Friday, 19 June 2026 14:27 (yesterday)

the thing that strikes me about that era is nothing to with brexit but just how evil Theresa May seemed to me at the time, and yet in the current milieu she wouldn't be evil enough for the Labour Party. Her austerity cuts were lightweight in comparison (not meant in any reductive way because they were still evil and caused much poverty and social harms at the time) and she wasn't a terf, in fact she was certainly progressive on trans issues.

calzino, Friday, 19 June 2026 14:52 (yesterday)

She was very illiberal on immigration but pretty libertarian / Classical Liberal on individual autonomy and distrust of the state (inc. police).

ShariVari, Friday, 19 June 2026 14:56 (yesterday)

yeah hostile environment was some fascist white supremacist iron glove shit

Labour were forced to reverse May's 2 child cap, but May didn't slash disabled benefits for people incapable of working in half. And then start threatening to do even worse shit. And wasn't a transphobic piece of shit.

actually fuck it they are both awful

calzino, Friday, 19 June 2026 14:57 (yesterday)

sometimes a politician looks sound because an issue today wasn't an issue then. i don't remember the all-channels war on trans people being in full swing 10 years ago

calzino, Friday, 19 June 2026 15:08 (yesterday)

Yep. Very different environment and hard to know whether she would have stuck to her core position in favour of personal autonomy under pressure.

ShariVari, Friday, 19 June 2026 15:09 (yesterday)

Strong and stable, strong and stable, seems even longer ago now. Also her weird Slenderman Mexican wave at the Euros.

LocalGarda, Friday, 19 June 2026 15:17 (yesterday)

I miss the Power Stance.

Has obvs been reimported to the right via the US, etc, but I think a large initial part of U.K. transphobia discourse was ‘moderate progressives’ using it as a moat between them and younger, more left-wing people perceived as threatening to their sinecures in the press and cultural spheres, so not really all that relevant to conversations happening within the Tory Party.

ShariVari, Friday, 19 June 2026 15:21 (yesterday)

Yes it was. Big part of the reason I was always very annoyed at “men are more transphobic why are you obsessed with terfs” style talking points: because the context I live in has allegedly progressive women claiming transphobia is pro-woman and that deserves extremely rigorous pushback from other women.
