yeah maybe PBKR can explain this to me, aren't they just going to appeal and keep kicking it down the road?
― I painted my teeth (sleeve), Tuesday, May 21, 2024 1:29 PM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink
Not a criminal lawyer (thank god), but I would presume Trump will be out walking around on appeal until near election day. NY has pretty lenient bail now (thank god) for these kinds of non-violent offenses and Trump is not a flight risk (until November, ha ha).
He can automatically be appealing to the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, 1st Dept, which is the NY intermediate appellate court that has jurisdiction over Manhattan. Not sure if criminal is different but that can easily take 3-6 months on the civil side. Assuming he loses there, he can appeal to the NY Court of Appeals (NY State equivalent of US Supreme Court), but they do not have to take the case (though maybe they will want to be bigshots, idk).

what I'm curious about is, assuming he wins, what power exactly does he have to quash this and the other trials he has pending?
― frogbs, Tuesday, 21 May 2024 19:12 (two years ago)
The two federal trials he can ask the DOJ to stop. Georgia, not so much. (And while he's not been charged in Arizona or Michigan, all his toadies are currently facing things there too.)
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 May 2024 19:16 (two years ago)
State court trials, probably little. Federal court trials, probably some.
In the latter case, quash would be more like continued delay + replace prosecutors = dies a slow death, rather than literal quash.
Knowing Trump though, he is just going to want to wave a wand on inauguration day and have all the cases magically disappear and when he finds out he can't do that is going to create more trouble for himself trying to accomplish that in the dumbest, most obvious way possible.
― il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Tuesday, 21 May 2024 19:19 (two years ago)
should he win i suspect he will persuade georgia to make its course go away, new york's appeal will be stayed until he's dead. i don't know how that'll happen but but but

We're taking a short break. Trump leaves the courtroom, carrying a pile of printouts and what appears to be a copy of The New York Times. His entourage follows.

if i was right (which would be a first) about pres trump serving while on bail from a stayed appeal he could be "president bail" which is i suppose easier to stomach then "president jail."

the more I think about it the more fucked up this hostage journalist in Russia thing is, maybe someone can explain this to me but it sure sounds like he just admitted he has a quid pro quo with Putin going on right now
I know it makes me sound like a crank but I really do think something's happening here, I mean this classified docs case is still extremely weird and even by Trump's standards doesn't make any sense. Trump himself famously never paid attention to anything in his briefings. he's not even offering an explanation of why he's doing it besides "because I can" and now there's evidence of his people lying to the FBI and trying to move the documents from room to room to evade them, to the point where an ex-President's home had to be raided by the FBI. theres also the fact that Trump has always been very rigidly pro-Russia, like his viewpoints on everything are constantly bouncing all over the place except for the ones that directly relate to Russia. on all that he's very consistent. its just so at odds with everything else he does
― frogbs, Friday, 24 May 2024 04:23 (two years ago)
Meaning the tweet regarding Gershkovich? Unless there's something more concrete than the tweet I don't know we can take that at face value or anything close to it
― anvil, Friday, 24 May 2024 05:06 (two years ago)
As to how pro-Russia he is, I don't think there's a particularly clear picture, its quite mixed. Trump provided more aid to Ukraine than Obama did, and while he seemed much more Putin friendly than Obama was, I don't really think that was particularly reflected in actions. I'd way overall the Obama administration was more Russia friendly than the Trump one
Russia also invaded Ukraine under Obama, and didn't upscale until after Trump was gone, so even if it were true, it didn't factor into Putin's calculations to take advantage of it
― anvil, Friday, 24 May 2024 05:16 (two years ago)
What Trump says and what Trump does do often overlap and not in consistent ways, but I think its a mistake to draw too close a link between the two, and should be analysed in isolation mostly (while acknowledging they're not entirely distinct)

thats what I'm wondering, if anyone's yet done any research into what he's saying here, idk it seems pretty bad. always so hard to tell with this guy but it's like 100% clear that if Russia wants something in exchange for help during the election Trump is more than happy to deliver, if anything he's more willing to do so given how little consequences he's faced so far
actually doing stuff while in office is another thing though, especially since the heat was on this particular connection before he even took office, and even Republicans weren't really going along with what he was saying just yet.
just saying for all the weird and bonkers shit he says on a daily basis his support for certain specific Russian political goals has always raised a few eyebrows
― frogbs, Friday, 24 May 2024 14:19 (two years ago)
I think you're reading too much into it. I get it, when MTG started going on about TransCarpathia that didn't come out of nowhere, so its far from impossible it has some significance, but this is more likely to be nothing. I'm not sure he has any particular interest in freeing Gershkovich either
