Connections today: fucken "buzzy things" now, is it?

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 09:46 (three weeks ago) link

Ha I got that one

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 10:59 (three weeks ago) link

Connections feels kinda arbitrary and half-assed.. Like, in the instructions, they show easy at the top and purple at the bottom. Why not put the rows in order spatially, once you've solved them? If you solve purple it should appear at the bottom.

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:02 (three weeks ago) link

so you can see that you guessed purple first, and bossed it.

ledge, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:03 (three weeks ago) link

Yeah but I don’t remember what the colours are.. yellow? Green? Huh?

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:05 (three weeks ago) link

I don’t think showing the rows in the order you solved them is arbitrary. You’d also get the cognitive dissonance of having a blue or green row breaking up the playing field if you solve them out of order rather than keeping all of the words still in play together.

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:05 (three weeks ago) link

Hmm yes

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:06 (three weeks ago) link

yesterday's had steal, deal, buy, value but, unless it's another AmE thing, they're not all synonyms just more or less words in the same area.

ledge, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:07 (three weeks ago) link

those all mean “bargain”

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:10 (three weeks ago) link

i would say "that's a steal / deal" but not "that's a value" - maybe mario would - i'd say "that's good value" but it's not a noun on its own. as for buy, i've never heard it used anything like that.

ledge, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:14 (three weeks ago) link

It's more of a semantic field thing, I guess.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:16 (three weeks ago) link

yeah it’s true value doesn’t work the same way grammatically

this is what i mean by half assed

but i have heard “that’s a great buy” plenty of times

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:23 (three weeks ago) link

though even then you need to put "great" or "good" in front of it for it to work the same way

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:25 (three weeks ago) link

i have never heard of "gossip" being described in such a way.

stupid group, that one (had them left at the end)

kinder, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 12:02 (three weeks ago) link

Connections definitely makes me appreciate the art of Only Connect walls

kinder, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 12:03 (three weeks ago) link

WordAll today was one of the hardest I've seen. Took me 20 mins according to the page (though I obviously wasn't staring at it that entire time)

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 12:04 (three weeks ago) link

I did today's WordAll in 3m27 - it wasn't easy though

ailsa, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 12:58 (three weeks ago) link

kinder have you never seen Jesus Christ Superstar?

the broader point is solid though ("buy" definitely a pretty wack stretch). I think of Connections as a kind of training ground for the half-assedness of crossword clues. maybe mentally append a "sometimes" or "in a way" or "?" after all their categories

rob, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 14:24 (three weeks ago) link

Had to chuckle today at the name of the yellow category in connections. For purple I had 8 things left and just picked the ones that looked kinda random and that worked.

that's not my post, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 14:41 (three weeks ago) link

Xps the wall was always the one I struggled with on only connect and connections has massively helped my game improve

nxd, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 15:58 (three weeks ago) link

I'd forgotten to do the Wordall today! yes it was a headscratcher.

kinder, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 17:09 (three weeks ago) link

I just learned about Wordall thanks to this thread today, what a fun game

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 18:40 (three weeks ago) link

Tried Wordall but the inability to backspace using the keyboard is a non-starter for me.

Bottom Cruise (Leee), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 22:10 (three weeks ago) link

managed to shave 1 sec off my best Wordall time today. even with a mistake.

kinder, Thursday, 23 May 2024 12:48 (three weeks ago) link

yesterday I had never heard of Ovula; today on the Wordall another word I've never seen and one I was iffy about.

kinder, Sunday, 26 May 2024 08:03 (three weeks ago) link

Anyone's Connections not working today? The other games seem OK

kinder, Thursday, 30 May 2024 09:02 (two weeks ago) link

Works for me, got it with no errors.

bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Thursday, 30 May 2024 09:16 (two weeks ago) link

Wordle seems like it's down to just words with two of the same letter now.

nashwan, Thursday, 30 May 2024 09:18 (two weeks ago) link

Connections came back for me, got it no errors woohoo

kinder, Thursday, 30 May 2024 09:42 (two weeks ago) link

today's wordle sucked

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 May 2024 10:23 (two weeks ago) link

My 16 year old son beat me at Wordle today (him 4 me 5) - a disgusting development

Cognosc in Tyrol (emsworth), Thursday, 30 May 2024 11:10 (two weeks ago) link

3 for me today, I don't see the problem. :) I've also been enjoying Order Up lately.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 30 May 2024 17:43 (two weeks ago) link

if you get a hit on the “wrong” greens first there could be like 20 different possibilities

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 May 2024 17:45 (two weeks ago) link

so plan two steps ahead and pick a word that maximally reduces the number of possible words?

flopson, Thursday, 30 May 2024 18:20 (two weeks ago) link

wordle ate my streak between yesterday and today for some reason

mookieproof, Thursday, 30 May 2024 18:23 (two weeks ago) link

Today’s connections was v ilx-y

sarahell, Friday, 31 May 2024 13:40 (two weeks ago) link

yes!

xp I think I had two of my lowest-ever wordle luck scores yesterday and the day before (18/99 and 19/99)

Dan S, Friday, 31 May 2024 22:30 (two weeks ago) link

for Connections, today's was the first of those I've done where there was definitely a group of four that neatly fit into a category but which wasn't an answer: Fuji, Canon, Polaroid and Olympus are all brands of cameras

silverfish, Saturday, 1 June 2024 01:55 (two weeks ago) link

yeah that was my first guess as well, i was not pleased

polyamerie "it's more than this 1 thing" (m bison), Saturday, 1 June 2024 01:57 (two weeks ago) link

I made that mistake too, it was annoying. Anyway, 'shake it like a polaroid' is a very outdated term referring to the past with Fuji peel-apart films, today's polaroids are integral films with the film development occurring between protective layers, and with much more painterly results, and there is no shaking, just initially shielding from light

Dan S, Saturday, 1 June 2024 02:13 (two weeks ago) link

the Fuji peel-apart films in decades past were referred to as polaroids, but only because the Polaroid company (and its very different process) became synonymous with instant film

Dan S, Saturday, 1 June 2024 02:32 (two weeks ago) link

The US-centric nature of Connections continues to be the most infuriating thing about it. 'stat' meaning 'don't delay' isn't something I've heard of .

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 1 June 2024 08:20 (two weeks ago) link

what do they say in UK hospitals?

jaymc, Saturday, 1 June 2024 08:26 (two weeks ago) link

also, it's Latin:
https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/statim

jaymc, Saturday, 1 June 2024 08:28 (two weeks ago) link

I've never heard it used so not sure what it's equivalent to.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 1 June 2024 08:54 (two weeks ago) link

if i was a real head i’d come up with a name for when you solve the hardest tier first and then get the rest in descending order of difficulty but actually i don’t give a shit

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 1 June 2024 08:59 (two weeks ago) link

I'm British and I've heard of it so I got that line, however I had never heard of any on the blue line so crashed out.
