today's is ridiculous...got in 6 and guess-learned a whole new word en route

nashwan, Monday, 13 May 2024 23:59 (two weeks ago) link

Wait did we have the same puzzle? Because I thought it was average

sarahell, Tuesday, 14 May 2024 00:47 (two weeks ago) link

Yeah I got it in 4, was pretty straightforward once I had 4 letters

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Tuesday, 14 May 2024 01:24 (two weeks ago) link

I had a lucky combination of things in the second word and got it in 3. Hitting the right consonant early makes such a huge difference.

are we talking about today's wordle? they told me I had higher skill level but worse luck, like often, and that I didn't even solve it as well as the NYT average person, which is insulting.

these wordlebot comments and NYT averages are depressing and I'm coming think are meant to intimidate

if we are talking about today's connections, I only got the blue tier because it was the only category left

Dan S, Tuesday, 14 May 2024 01:38 (two weeks ago) link

lol wordlebot can be so enraging but I can't help myself.

I got today's in 4. Might've been able to get it in 3 if I hadn't spaced and played that move as if my last two letters were yellow instead of green.

jaymc, Tuesday, 14 May 2024 02:13 (two weeks ago) link

I got it in 4 -- might have gotten it in 3 but I perversely tried PUBIC for that guess.

Ippei's on a bummer now (WmC), Tuesday, 14 May 2024 02:44 (two weeks ago) link

Xp DanS … that was me except the green tier … I had 3 of the 4 at first and then moved on to a different connection because I didn’t want to waste guesses on figuring out the fourth… my initial 4th included “duck (duck goose)”

sarahell, Tuesday, 14 May 2024 03:41 (two weeks ago) link

spoiler for today's...never had this happen before

Nice!

that's not my post, Wednesday, 15 May 2024 22:00 (one week ago) link

7 words to find on WordAll today! luckily I got the main format quickly.

kinder, Thursday, 16 May 2024 10:11 (one week ago) link

xpost was that word association football, there?

Mark G, Thursday, 16 May 2024 10:22 (one week ago) link

"leachy" = "lychee"? fuck off.

Alba, Monday, 20 May 2024 08:34 (one week ago) link

is leachy pronounced lie or lychee prounced lee? google tells me the fruit is lie in both uk & us english.

ledge, Monday, 20 May 2024 08:35 (one week ago) link

also who has ever in their lives used the word leachy?

ledge, Monday, 20 May 2024 08:36 (one week ago) link

Leechy is a word I have used… Leachy sounds like a person’s name

sarahell, Monday, 20 May 2024 12:31 (one week ago) link

I pronounce lychee "lee-chee."

jaymc, Monday, 20 May 2024 12:54 (one week ago) link

ok that's last time i take pronunciation advice from google.

https://www.pronounceitright.com/pronunciation/lychee-15199

i'd like to see a US map of lie vs lee.

still mad at the puzzle though.

ledge, Monday, 20 May 2024 13:00 (one week ago) link

Yeah that was dumb

kinder, Monday, 20 May 2024 19:48 (one week ago) link

Connections today: fucken "buzzy things" now, is it?

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 09:46 (six days ago) link

Ha I got that one

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 10:59 (six days ago) link

Connections feels kinda arbitrary and half-assed.. Like, in the instructions, they show easy at the top and purple at the bottom. Why not put the rows in order spatially, once you've solved them? If you solve purple it should appear at the bottom.

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:02 (six days ago) link

so you can see that you guessed purple first, and bossed it.

ledge, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:03 (six days ago) link

Yeah but I don’t remember what the colours are.. yellow? Green? Huh?

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:05 (six days ago) link

I don’t think showing the rows in the order you solved them is arbitrary. You’d also get the cognitive dissonance of having a blue or green row breaking up the playing field if you solve them out of order rather than keeping all of the words still in play together.

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:05 (six days ago) link

Hmm yes

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:06 (six days ago) link

yesterday's had steal, deal, buy, value but, unless it's another AmE thing, they're not all synonyms just more or less words in the same area.

ledge, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:07 (six days ago) link

those all mean “bargain”

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:10 (six days ago) link

i would say "that's a steal / deal" but not "that's a value" - maybe mario would - i'd say "that's good value" but it's not a noun on its own. as for buy, i've never heard it used anything like that.

ledge, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:14 (six days ago) link

It's more of a semantic field thing, I guess.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:16 (six days ago) link

yeah it’s true value doesn’t work the same way grammatically

this is what i mean by half assed

but i have heard “that’s a great buy” plenty of times

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:23 (six days ago) link

though even then you need to put "great" or "good" in front of it for it to work the same way

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 11:25 (six days ago) link

i have never heard of "gossip" being described in such a way.

stupid group, that one (had them left at the end)

kinder, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 12:02 (six days ago) link

Connections definitely makes me appreciate the art of Only Connect walls

kinder, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 12:03 (six days ago) link

WordAll today was one of the hardest I've seen. Took me 20 mins according to the page (though I obviously wasn't staring at it that entire time)

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 12:04 (six days ago) link

I did today's WordAll in 3m27 - it wasn't easy though

ailsa, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 12:58 (six days ago) link

kinder have you never seen Jesus Christ Superstar?

the broader point is solid though ("buy" definitely a pretty wack stretch). I think of Connections as a kind of training ground for the half-assedness of crossword clues. maybe mentally append a "sometimes" or "in a way" or "?" after all their categories

rob, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 14:24 (six days ago) link

Had to chuckle today at the name of the yellow category in connections. For purple I had 8 things left and just picked the ones that looked kinda random and that worked.

that's not my post, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 14:41 (six days ago) link

Xps the wall was always the one I struggled with on only connect and connections has massively helped my game improve

nxd, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 15:58 (six days ago) link

I'd forgotten to do the Wordall today! yes it was a headscratcher.

kinder, Wednesday, 22 May 2024 17:09 (six days ago) link

I just learned about Wordall thanks to this thread today, what a fun game

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 18:40 (six days ago) link

Tried Wordall but the inability to backspace using the keyboard is a non-starter for me.

Bottom Cruise (Leee), Wednesday, 22 May 2024 22:10 (six days ago) link

managed to shave 1 sec off my best Wordall time today. even with a mistake.

kinder, Thursday, 23 May 2024 12:48 (five days ago) link

yesterday I had never heard of Ovula; today on the Wordall another word I've never seen and one I was iffy about.
