From Pat Buchanan's magazine: GOP Must Go. Immigration/amnesty is their big issue, but hey, you take what you can get.

jhoshea megafauna (scoopsnoodle), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

what's that website for people recording their voting process?

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

sounds like any dem editorial until you get to the immigration stuff - things is getting weird.

jhoshea megafauna (scoopsnoodle), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

It's oh-so-comforting to hear that even on this board people are voting Republican, and barely better, Green.

In New York, every office is almost always a Dem lock in the general election. Tho if I had to vote for Hillary to give the Dems a majority, it still wouldn't happen. And the Green Senate candidate was antiwar. And fuuuuuck the spineless Dems.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder how much of this record turnout consists of gen xyz'ers and such.

Wondering this same thing myself. All I saw were ancients, but, as I said, my voting machine was in a rest/nursing home.

I ended up voting for at least one Republican candidate in a local election precisely because she was the only candidate who ran a non-slanderous campaign. Thinking I maybe should've thought that through more, but whatev, local KY politics will never be anything short of hilarious.

diebold with a vengeance (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Local politics around here are wonderfully weird. The Libertarians trash the GOP and the Democrats mostly shrug and accept not winning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

I voted when the polls opened this morning, and it was very quiet and sparsely attended. The only people voting were older folks, but hopefully that just means that most people opted to vote later today.

Beth S. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

ah, memories

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Gore Vidal: "We’re facing the most important election in my lifetime—which does not quite extend back to that of Abraham Lincoln, but it’s pretty close."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Really long lines at my precinct in Nashville (Sevier Park), where I also cast my first vote, inauspiciouly for Dukakis. As the neighborhood is half black/half lefty white gentrifiers, and hearing that turnout is heavy in urban TN, that's good for Ford. I noticed that more than a few voters spent barely ten seconds on the eight page ballot, which is cluttered with a lot of Metro charter crap and some local, unopposed races.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

ath (ath), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

interesting broder piece (w/ some slightly dubious claims including a line about welfare reform i'm sure will OUTRAGE some ilxors) about 94, if o'reilly or anyone seriously try to spin that 'low turnout' line do an a-b comparison w/ 94 turnout. thank god for early voting.

vote carcetti yall

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

hand collection of voter protection link & phone numbers to report any ballot site shenanigans.

There was a report today on local radio that a coupla folks had set up a "temporary ballot drop site" with a cardboard box on the roadside somewhere in SE Portland. The host advised the caller to call the cops next.

(Hey, he's the one who invoked Tolkien as a reelection theme...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

We (central KY) had new voting machines, which I found odd since we have already had automated voting machines since like goddamn 96, while just a couple counties away they are still on paper ballots.

diebold with a vengeance (nickalicious), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

I liked that I had the old school ballots. Diebold makes me v. nervous.

Beth S. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

C4 news over here is running a story that Rummy is out tomorrow two people have turned down the job of replacing him and Sen. John Warner is going to replace him.

any other sources?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Yup. No paper trail for Diebold. I filed a complaint about that during the primaries.

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

x-post -- Some crackpipe somewhere?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

just checking, it was a throwaway one liner in a long overview piece

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Off to dentist, will check back in later...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

Heavy rain all day in Rep-leaning east TN, while dry in the west. Don't know if it'll affect turnout all that much, but it might slightly shorten Ford's not-so-great odds.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

lolz for stupid headlines:

"Campaign Nears Climax As Polls Tighten"

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Surprise, surprise.

Byron York, NRO whitehouse correspondent, clearly wasn't expecting to do a stand up interview on the news today. he has his brooks brothers suit, shirt and tie, and wearing jeans on his bottom half.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

and when are people going to start demanding Instant Runoff Voting so voters don't have to worry about sacrificing their vote for the sake of strategy?

already implemented in san francisco; on the ballot in oakland.

viborg (viborg), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

IRV = STV?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

no, I think that's the standard uniform of the Modern Conservative Internet Dork (xp)

I voted for what may be the last time on an old big-handle-and-toggle machine - any nyc'ers know when we go high-tech?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

i am really terrified i wont be able to vote. i went this morning but there was a 2-hour wait and i had to get to work. :/ :/ :/

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Just got back from voting, a pleasant stroll two blocks to the poll. New Diebold machines, which prompted my wife to say loudly, "Oh, Diebold, I guess I know who's going to win here." Up jumped this guy in a suit, a Diebold rep we presume, to walk her through the process and show her all the safety features that prove no fraud, backup paper ballot, etc.

Django Blowhardt (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

What's with poll closing at 7pm across the US, how are people going to vote after work?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

i am really terrified i wont be able to vote.

you will be. if you're in line by 8pm local time, you will be able to vote.

xp

polls are supposed to say open til 8.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

If you're there before they close up shop (7pm, I think), they have to let you vote, right?

This might be able to help:

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

vote by mail is awesome.

yetimike (McGonigal), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

poll closing times vary widely by state and municipality. in NYC, polls are open 6 AM - 9 PM.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

That website will tell you when your polls close, according to state/polling place.

molly d (mollyd), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

vote by mail would be a great way to piss off karl rove, but i have a lot of problems with that idea

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Air America newsbreak just mentioned that there are efforts in Denver to keep the polls open two hours longer than usual.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

i voted before 9 am at PS 139 in brooklyn but it was straight-up in-and-out, ten minutes tops. i did some poll-watching for the sept. primaries and it's not a hugely packed polling place to begin with (some EDs had a turnout of about fifteen people, though presumably there'll be quite a bit more this time around).

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

don weiner (don weiner), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah, and dig this shit:

batshit rightwing radio loony Laura Ingraham is now asking her callers to flood the Democratic Voter Protection phone lines.

Most things don't piss me off to violence; this does.
