― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 22 March 2024 21:11 (two years ago)
Cheating on your wife when sha has cancer, that's more Boris Johnson's thing.
― Tom D (the first British Asian ILXor) (Tom D.), Friday, 22 March 2024 21:12 (two years ago)
I think Newt Gingrich did something similar

RIP Kate. At least you won't get put on a 6 month waiting list for treatment like your lowborn subjects do. If I had any power they'd all be in gulags, getting executed one by one. The lucky ones put into forced labour and then as a treat when they are exhausted from breaking rocks, they'd have a 9 hour slide presentation on the theme of a different Crimes of Britain post every day for the rest of their miserable worthless lives.

and tbh US thread-tone policers, this news makes me about as sad as when that fucker who played Jock in Dallas apparently died trying to land a helicopter in a lake. Pfft.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 22 March 2024 22:16 (two years ago)
not sure I can find a balance between "heart goes out to a young mum with cancer" and "this family need to be guillotined" but Tom D's suggestion that we never hear about them ever again sounds like the perfect compromise.

saw a poll where only like 20% of britons were in favour of canceling the monarchy, need to get that number up cmon
― lag∞n, Friday, 22 March 2024 22:21 (two years ago)
look she married in, she didn't have to but she wasn't anointed at birth to a life of palaces and hunting grounds
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 22 March 2024 22:25 (two years ago)
I think the actual dividing line is between "they ain't no human beings" as the official status of the monarchy and the casual hand-rubbing misogyny that's drawn to the existence of Kate Windsor as a public figure who's a woman
― Morris O’Shea Salazar (Noodle Vague), Friday, 22 March 2024 22:27 (two years ago)
she knew what she was doing marrying into this family, I can't think of anyone who has married into it more deliberately

I think Americans are more in favour of the British monarchy than the British are. A bit like the Beatles.

decent, is there any agitation for ending it, is it in the news do people talk about it or is it more accepted that this is just some shit thats gonna go on forever
― lag∞n, Friday, 22 March 2024 22:36 (two years ago)
The latter. Give it time though.

According to Jasper Selwyn, the then-careers advisor at Marlborough School, Kate was all set to study at the University of Edinburgh alongside two of her best friends. Having achieved 2A’s and a B, Kate even reportedly had accommodation for the prestigious Scottish university all sorted out. However, Kate pulled out last minute and decided to apply for the quieter St Andrews University, after there was an announcement confirming Prince William was to start studying there in 2001. Kate then went on a gap year, starting at St Andrews at the same time as her future husband.

I spoke with some dudes at a bar in Stockholm last summer, and they said that most people there more or less support their monarchy as some kind of 'unifying influence' but also those royals manage to maintain a much lower profile and don't announce 'lifestyle brands' etc.

Probably! I was sharing some of the spicier links and rumours shared here in a private forum of mostly Americans and was lambasted from a few for being so "negative" with attempts to shame me for my schadenfreude and gossip mongering once the cancer diagnosis was shared. While I'm not for outright guillotining them all, certainly tearing down the institution and never hearing from them again seems like an ideal compromise to me. The whole circus felt gross when I first became aware of it in the 90's. I feel sympathizing for them is as gross as sympathizing for Trump's family tbqh, maybe that's harsh but it's how I see it. Sucks for Kate and her kids, but my emotional response to the news is a flat line, if not disappointment that it's not spicier.

not that this matters for the discussion here but it was actually the character who went missing after a helicopter crash, not either of the two actors who played him - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jock_Ewing
