As far as the "but they're real human beings" goes one of the issues is that the function of Royalty is precisely based on the argument that they are not simply human beings

there is no story there, he has beaten cancer with a of regime herbal tea and ginseng (and getting tossed off by his servant every morning)

I spoke with some dudes at a bar in Stockholm last summer, and they said that most people there more or less support their monarchy as some kind of 'unifying influence' but also those royals manage to maintain a much lower profile and don't announce 'lifestyle brands' etc.
