The Princess of Wales has disclosed that she has been diagnosed with cancer and is in the early stages of receiving chemotherapy treatment.

In a statement recorded at Windsor by the BBC, Catherine said her condition had been discovered after she had major abdominal surgery in January.

After weeks of speculation about her health, Catherine said she and her husband, Prince William, had needed time to explain the situation to their three children, George, 10, Charlotte, eight, and Louis, five.

My perhaps controversial take (as an American, no less) is that it's cool to make fun of the royal family as a ridiculous and outdated concept, definitely cool to make fun of their personality quirks, very cool to make fun of the PR dumbness around that photoshopped picture, not cool to make fun of a mom with cancer.

As far as the "but they're real human beings" goes one of the issues is that the function of Royalty is precisely based on the argument that they are not simply human beings

the photoshop thing was insane. as limmy said the other day can you imagine her opening up photoshop and deciding which file format to use etc etc.

most royals (spain, sweden, etc.) would probably be able to maintain a low profile during something like this but everybody wants to know what every UK royal is up to at any given moment.. I know they kind of court this attention, but still

RIP Kate. At least you won't get put on a 6 month waiting list for treatment like your lowborn subjects do. If I had any power they'd all be in gulags, getting executed one by one. The lucky ones put into forced labour and then as a treat when they are exhausted from breaking rocks, they'd have a 9 hour slide presentation on the theme of a different Crimes of Britain post every day for the rest of their miserable worthless lives.
