I agree that the panties one was great.

― bear say hi to me (ENBB), Monday, November 16, 2009 6:32 AM (fourteen years ago) bookmarkflaglink

I don't remember what the panties one was.

Been thinking that I need to rewatch this start to finish. It's been so long. I didn't realize Leon still lived with Larry lol.

I so badly want this series to stick the landing but Irma and Maria Sofia are almost a non-starter for me. Easily the worst characters of the series. Only prime Leon and Richard Lewis can save it.

ooh didn't realize it started already. I liked both those characters btw

didn't Larry recently say something involving the Seinfeld finale was going to happen soon? wonder if he's referring to something that's gonna happen in this series

frogbs, Friday, 9 February 2024 19:58 (four months ago) link

this reminded me of Curb lol

Deep down, I thought this first episode back was bad telivision. But deeper down I don't care about that because it's Curb and it's bloody great! Leon's back, Larry's back, they can make the worst television in the world in this offensively formulaic way, and I will still gulp it down every week and say thank you very much sir afterwards

AI's next step is being able to create Curb episodes from scratch. The formula is so there for it.

H.P, Saturday, 10 February 2024 00:52 (four months ago) link

it was okay. I dont mind Irma or Maria Sofia, imo the issue with this was the storyline with the wealthy South African guy which feels like a slight variation of a plotline they've done 7 or 8 times now

frogbs, Sunday, 11 February 2024 17:51 (four months ago) link

the return of this show did remind me of what is probably my favorite Seinfeld moment though

there's an episode where Jerry and Elaine are outside and they spot Frank Costanza, who is talking with a mysterious man in a cape, played by Larry David. George spends most of the episode trying to figure out who this man is. it turns out to be his lawyer. at the end of the episode there's a woman who Kramer may have impregnated who is considering throwing herself off a bridge. Larry David shows up to save her. she looks at him and says "Who are you?" and he just replies, "I'm Frank Costanza's lawyer"

First episode was way too rushed or overstuffed? Pacing was way off to me, the Larry vs. maid part felt forced... idk! It felt more like a cartoon based on Curb than the show itself.

Evan, Monday, 12 February 2024 17:31 (four months ago) link

yeah, it felt overstuffed to me. the car phone scene I didn't like. what was the point of it? if it was established that siri was messing up and calling people, then it ties into the end.

the lunch tray scene too - he takes the tray. ok, that's it?

i liked the show, but the show used to be tighter

francisF, Monday, 12 February 2024 17:38 (four months ago) link

they were usually better about weaving all those moments together more naturally, yeah exactly

Evan, Monday, 12 February 2024 18:01 (four months ago) link

The combo of ridiculing fat shaming and emotional support animals on planes feels...more like Adam Carolla circa 2014. Still, first episode's fun as usual, esp. the glasses.

First episode was way too rushed or overstuffed?

Given how Curb episodes work, I expected Leon's cake-slice stealing to be what gets Larry kicked out of the party somehow. For this show, weird to have just a comic loose end that doesn't have consequences.

paisley got boring (Eazy), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 19:27 (four months ago) link

yeah I was wondering about that too it's almost like an entire plotline got cut out except for one scene. they don't really ever dangle loose plot threads out like that do they? that was Seinfeld's thing too, every little side bit would always come back

frogbs, Tuesday, 13 February 2024 19:29 (four months ago) link

Second ep brought the ruckus but please, Larry, keep the core: Leon, Susie, Jeff, Richard, Funkhauser, Cheryl, Ted and Mary, various aggrieved service workers.
The Westwood Edgelord is ready for his close up.

The guy who played Funkhauser died in 2019 unfortunately

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 February 2024 09:11 (four months ago) link

feel like the long break between seasons is kinda hurting it, I mean It's Always Sunny did a Giuliani hair dye joke two seasons ago, and the water bottle thing Larry got arrested for was so wrapped up in the insanity of the 2020 election that I think most people forgot about it. anyway this episode was better than the first even if pretty much everything in it rehashes something from the show's past. it's still funny but I'm glad this is the last season. at this point I'm convinced Larry is gonna try to end this exactly the same way Seinfeld did.

frogbs, Thursday, 15 February 2024 15:38 (four months ago) link

This series definitely feels like a compilation of Curb’s greatest hits…oddly reminiscent of an Elton John or Stones farewell tour…crowd pleasing not exactly groundbreaking

The lawn jockey bit goes all the way back to the cigar store Indian in Seinfeld.

not to mention the Judy doll episode where he has to replace something very specific

I will say the Mocha Joe lookalike made me laugh a lot

getting a lot of Mr. Takahashi this season

frogbs, Monday, 26 February 2024 17:45 (three months ago) link

I kind of feel like at this point it's more like a show about Curb than it is actual Curb? Like, "let's enjoy watching one more round of [this character] doing [this character] thing." It's comfort TV, which is a weird thing for Curb to be. Not to say I am not enjoying it.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 26 February 2024 19:15 (three months ago) link

there are some funny subtle details, like Leon writing LEON across his 7/11 Big Gulp, even though Larry is the last person in the world who would touch a mystery Big Gulp

Richard Lewis :(

Omg the one with the lady giving him road head and then Larry refusing to taste her drink.

this season is just going to be a repeat of the seinfeld finale isn't it?

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 07:07 (three months ago) link

I thought this was the best episode for a while and I hope we see Richard Lewis again before the finale.

Talking of Richard Lewis, this is full of gold -

stirmonster, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 14:21 (three months ago) link

feel like the last few seasons have all been like that - first few episodes drag, then it gets good after that

definitely seems like he's gonna re-do the last episode of Seinfeld - I think every episode so far has had a pretty overt reference to the show (Ted Danson and the pen this week) - also Larry saying "I could go to jail for a year!" kinda gives it away

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 14:30 (three months ago) link

very sad about Richard Lewis.

The good news is, I'm still alive.

I almost put this in the obituary thread, but here's 16-year-old Richard Lewis:

This is so great.

sometime during the 2000s, Spirit airlines had celebrities record the airline safety information that would be played before takeoff. Richard Lewis was one of them and it was so hilarious they even allowed his to be played. I remember the part during the "in case of a water landing" section and he makes a crack that was essentially "you're dead if that scenario even happened."

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 5 March 2024 21:27 (three months ago) link

its got to end with some link between him getting free of Irma but then going to jail or having to chose between supporting Irma or jail, and him choosing going to jail.

final pay off will be him in jail with the guy he gave the jacket to in episode 2, who hates him now....

my opinionation (Hamildan), Tuesday, 12 March 2024 15:48 (three months ago) link

two weeks pass...

I had no idea about this and it is conjuring even weirder finale possibilities...

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 21:04 (two months ago) link

except RFK wasn't running when this was written/filmed, also I don't think it's really well known that Cheryl is married to him? but yeah it's pretty strange.

last episode was kind of strange in that you had Conan playing himself, but Steve Buscemi also pops up *not* playing himself, although he's not a character in the show

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 21:32 (two months ago) link

RFK WAS being a weird anti vaxxer covid conspiracy guy during filming tho

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 21:39 (two months ago) link

true but most people didn't even know there *was* a Robert Kennedy then, much less that he was married to Cheryl from Curb

I'm definitely very curious how it's all gonna end. obviously Seinfeld's finale was considered a dud which I know is a bit of a sore spot for Larry, so its kind of interesting how hard he's telegraphing that the exact same thing is gonna happen in Curb. in fact he's been telegraphing it so hard that I'm convinced there's gonna be some major bait and switch here. at first I thought he's gonna die somehow in the finale but they already did that way back in like Season 5 right?

tbh I'm not sure how Seinfeld should've ended either, dealing with finality in a show where the characters never change and a bunch of plots just go unresolved (didnt Kramer get a girl pregnant in one episode and it was just never mentioned again?) must be pretty difficult. though I kind of wonder, did people think it was that disappointing at the time? I mean just binging through the show it's pretty lame but at the time bringing back all those characters and catchphrases must've been pretty cool.

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 22:20 (two months ago) link

I liked the premise of the Seinfeld finale indicting the cast as villains all along but the execution came off as a pandering catchphrase-laden victory lap, but the fatwa season inverted that premise (Larry being tried and judged to be the hero the entire time... in the eyes of Iran's secret police!) and I think that worked much better!

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 22:52 (two months ago) link

Right and that one brought back a bunch of minor characters so I can’t imagine he'll do that again

I thought the idea of Young Larry becoming a huge hit was a good premise for the final season but it hasn’t been mentioned since episode 1

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 23:30 (two months ago) link

Best to treat it as a sitcom that happens to have season-long arcs, rather than expecting in to culminate in some multi-season culmination.

paisley got boring (Eazy), Thursday, 28 March 2024 00:26 (two months ago) link

ok so one thing that kinda bothered me about this one was Larry needing "clearance" to talk to Conan, when in reality if anything it would be the reverse

but it got me wondering how big a celebrity Larry is in the Curb universe - obviously the show Curb doesn't exist within Curb so isn't it likely no one but Seinfeld nerds would actually know who Larry David was? so how does a show like Young Larry get made? would anyone watch a sitcom about Chuck Lorre's childhood?

In the Curb world, he has a hit sitcom on the air right now doesn’t he?
