close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Sunday, 4 February 2024 14:31 (two years ago)

I was going to say I'm not sure if Poch will last the season.

Who is Sky Sports' co-commentator on the Brentford-MC match? That accent has fascinated me for years and I want to learn where it's from.

that's when I reach for my copy of Revolver (WmC), Monday, 5 February 2024 20:45 (two years ago)

it's Alan Smith for me?

nxd, Monday, 5 February 2024 21:03 (two years ago)

will never ever understand how a cross in to that area finds a man unmarked by a centre half

i know ill sound prehistoric but fuck me, lads if ye only have one job its that

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Monday, 5 February 2024 21:15 (two years ago)

The other guy w/Smith, I think it's Seb Hutchinson. The slight introduction of a "w" sound when pronouncing r's, I'm going down a rwabbit/wrabbit hole and it seems there's some disagreement whether it's a regional accent or a slight speech impediment? Like, he just said "it's a gwreat chance"

that's when I reach for my copy of Revolver (WmC), Monday, 5 February 2024 21:22 (two years ago)

i think speech impediment but ill give a good listen now

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Monday, 5 February 2024 21:24 (two years ago)

but tbh are you not describing smith there?

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Monday, 5 February 2024 21:24 (two years ago)

One of my daughter's best childhood friends did this and I think she got picked up a lot of pronunciations via her father who had a moderate hearing loss.

xp well they never show the booth guys talking so I don't know which one is which. I think of Smith as the play-by-play guy and Hutchinson is the deeper-voiced color commentator but maybe I have it backward.

that's when I reach for my copy of Revolver (WmC), Monday, 5 February 2024 21:26 (two years ago)

Sorry for derail, this isn't the regional accents thread

that's when I reach for my copy of Revolver (WmC), Monday, 5 February 2024 21:28 (two years ago)

you would not believe the derails weve had over the years, and in a lot better matches than this

instructive to see what a man city goalie can do without action taken vsthe fouls out goalie has to endure without a whistle in each of our recent games

by which i mean this league is stinking and every ref is a cunt

blue cards

Number None, Friday, 9 February 2024 10:17 (two years ago)

just part of football's optimisation arc, see also expanded major tournaments and the same teams winning everything forever

imago, Friday, 9 February 2024 10:19 (two years ago)

Can we exchange VAR for blue cards? I'd take that.

cajunsunday, Friday, 9 February 2024 10:24 (two years ago)

Football needs a 'card rainbow' - red, yellow, blue, green, orange, indigo and violet. Also cards can be challenged in real time and the appeal judged by AI.

Countdown to breakaway "realness" league continues

wang mang band (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 February 2024 13:40 (two years ago)

Apropos of nothing I had an anxiety dream last night where Luton were drawing 6-6 with either Villa or Burnley, and I was following it online praying they wouldn't find a winner, but then they did 13 minutes into injury time

Ethinically Ambigaus (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 9 February 2024 13:49 (two years ago)

You've somehow turned that into an anxiety dream for me too as we're the only club to ever win 7-6 in English football league history. Unparalleled depravity

imago, Friday, 9 February 2024 13:51 (two years ago)

still say, take away VAR for offside, instead send the players a text message that says "Ur offside" in real time

goal rescinded due to a fraction of centimeter of a toe. fuck VAR, fucking sick o this shit.

never trust a big book and a simile (Neanderthal), Saturday, 10 February 2024 16:11 (two years ago)

Wolves just completely dominating and pulling Brentford out of shape but this has the eerie feeling of "well VAR chalked off our goal, now we're too in our heads to finish again", but hope to be wrong there.

never trust a big book and a simile (Neanderthal), Saturday, 10 February 2024 16:25 (two years ago)

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 February 2024 15:08 (two years ago)

Xpost Hwang ridiculous miss, kinda feel like VAR woulda pulled it back for foul in buildup
