news says that trump stomped out of the courtroom during closing arguments.

scott seward, Friday, 26 January 2024 15:11 (two years ago)

he probably stomped into the courtroom, too.

That is a truly beautiful self-own.

Now let's see how he inevitably manages to wriggle out of this one.

Frustrating how in the Alex Jones and Giuliani trials, the minute these guys get got and whalloped with punitive damages, all of a sudden they go bankrupt and their millions disappear. Hope Carroll gets all Trump's cash and his gold toilet, but if he plays the suddenly-bankrupt game himself, maybe that'll bruise his image in the eyes of his scumbag followers somehow? I'm guessing not, but.

Or maybe the shithead will keel over and die.

Bankruptcy courts are wise to this, since bankruptcy is a court procedure needing a judge’s permission, etc. they know all the tactics.

And yet, I don't think Jones has paid anything yet, right?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 January 2024 16:15 (two years ago)

Dunno, but, Trump already had to put $5M in escrow while he appeals the prior Carroll defamation case: https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/23/politics/trump-e-jean-carroll-5-5-million/index.html

Saw speculation that this could be in appeals for a very long time.

Judge Kaplan: Move onto another topic

Robert Kaplan: Objection
Judge: Move on

I like this one, the timing is impeccable:

Judge Kaplan: She showed you only five tweets-
Habba: Objection!
Judge Kaplan: Only one lawyer. Who is it?
Habba: Michael.
Michael Madaio: Objection.
Judge Kaplan: Overruled.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 January 2024 18:47 (two years ago)

Over and over this week, Trump’s lawyers argued that E. Jean Carroll was not sexually assaulted or defamed by their client, when in fact Trump was found liable for both offenses in court already. Why no one on the defense team — including Trump himself — has not been found in direct criminal contempt of court is indicative of our judicial system and its different rules for the rich and powerful.

Kaplan pretty much shut that down every time, strictly limited the questions his lawyers could ask Trump, etc. I've seen a couple of posts from lawyers who've worked these contexts basically saying Kaplan would be primarily interested in getting the trial done first (especially since Trump etc would love there to be an obvious mistrial happening -- it's what they kept trying with Engoron), then if he felt it warranted could happily sanction the hell out of his lawyers after.

the clip from the deposition where he's shown the photo of Jean Carroll, a woman he said he couldn't have assaulted because she's "not his type", and then proceeds to misindentify her as his second wife, while also being unable to recognize his first wife in the photo, is still I think one of the most truly insane Trump moments ever. the man's brain does not work

is that more or less than what was expected? seems like an awful lot to me

frogbs, Friday, 26 January 2024 21:46 (two years ago)

Yeah, that's a shitload of money lol

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 26 January 2024 21:47 (two years ago)

It's less than the Rudy decision, and less than the Alex Jones, fwiw, but it's still a lot!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 January 2024 21:47 (two years ago)

difference being that Trump is far more likely to actually have that kind of money

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 26 January 2024 21:49 (two years ago)

Context/comparison:

The more than $83 million in combined damages far exceeds the amount Donald Trump was ordered to pay last year when a jury found for E. Jean Carroll. In that case, the jury found that he sexually assaulted her and defamed her, and they awarded her a combined $5 million.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 January 2024 21:51 (two years ago)

think of how many NFTs he's gonna have to sell to recoup that

Whip-round from the adherents ought to cover it, or at least some of it. A little of it anyway.

fourth world problems (Matt #2), Friday, 26 January 2024 21:51 (two years ago)

File under understatement:

Judge Kaplan said to the anonymous jury that while they are now free to speak publicly, he didn’t advise it. “My advice to you is that you never disclose that you were on this jury and I wont say anything more about it.”

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 January 2024 21:52 (two years ago)

The sad/tragic/funny thing is, it seems impossible that Trump will be able to avoid defaming her *again*. He probably barely makes it a day.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 January 2024 21:53 (two years ago)

I dunno, Judge Kaplan, putting oneself in a position where Donald Trump might (and most likely will) defame you is starting to seem like a pretty sweet deal.

Great-Tasting Burger Perceptions (Old Lunch), Friday, 26 January 2024 21:54 (two years ago)

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 26 January 2024 21:59 (two years ago)

difference being that Trump is far more likely to actually have that kind of money

Or more likely he hung himself on his own rope there. Someone asked Ken White/Popehat about the possibility of an appeal and reduction on the punitive damages and his understated snark response:

Low. That’s a reasonable multiplier of actual to punitive and consistent with his stated wealth.

The kicker is 'stated wealth' because Carroll's legal team played a clip of a formal deposition where he claimed he was worth $10 billion. So if he suddenly pleads poverty as a reduce to reduce, people get to go 'wow so about this perjury you committed' and then things get even more fun for him. (Trump's team very much saw this possibility coming and tried to work against it today, to no avail.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 January 2024 22:02 (two years ago)

REASON to reduce, etc.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 January 2024 22:02 (two years ago)

All I know is he should double the pay of this legal team and bring them in for every single trial. If not to actually defend him then at least to entertain us all. But they should probably defend him, too.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 January 2024 22:06 (two years ago)

he's probably not going to pay his lawyer bills since they lost

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 26 January 2024 22:10 (two years ago)

I hope they got yuge retainers up front.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 26 January 2024 22:11 (two years ago)

Actually, I don't. Any lawyer who represents Trump gets whatever s/he deserves, which is nothing good.
