i finished up the flyer with the band names painted on separate cardboard pieces and places on top - with some lighting in my kitchen + my iphone the 'briefcases' cast small shadows. i might mess around with this more in the future (collaging on top of painted canvas/paper, creating more 3d space

this was the fourth or fifth oil painting i started, i think. i finished it (or stopped working on it) a couple months ago but didn't realize it was done until this morning as i thought about whether i should make space for it or not at my new spot. i don't have a nice camera and my lights are broken so i took 5 iphone photos and stitched them together to make this closeup

thank you! it's been 'in progress' for so long that i can no longer see it, but i'm glad to move on! it's going to be rolled up in a closet for the foreseeable future but i hope to show it in some sort of covid exhibition some day, if there ever is one. i think one of my original thoughts was to do something brutally confronting, like with a hospital bed and characters and text for some of them. i'm glad that i gave it a ton of time and made it less direct

Love the color on this. That big yellow eruption on the far right makes me think of something violent erupting like dragon's breath.

thank you, appreciate that pbkr! the evil imagery on the right was partly on purpose, partly temporary layers that i left behind. the flat yellow, i think, is from one of the very first layers i put down in summer 2021, just to put down a color and have something to work off of. and the figure, i think, was based off of this engraving by gustave dore, from his Genesis series:

i think that's Baruch, who is a minor character whose tale i can't remember. he maybe the son of a son of a son of a son of a more famous son. i was also looking at dore's dante's inferno engravings around the same time, and also thinking about hell and evil stuff a lot because of things in my personal life. i remember doing the quickest sketch with charcoal and then adding some color (i don't drunkenly paint now, but i did then, especially that night) and moving, figuring i had a ton more work to do. but i never touched it again! people reading this who think it is bad are probably like 'yeah buddy maybe you should have' lol, and i do think i could have (could still, but won't) kept working on it and changed it into something more concrete, but i got used to the way it looked there, and i like how feels (to me) like a piece of bad threatening past, still on there

so many typos, i'm just going to pretend like they're all on purpose

but my teacher gave me an 'A' for Affort

additional umprompted lore, just because i've been looking at this thing for years and haven't really talked to anyone about it: it's funny that what turned into a david bowie look-alike on the boat started out as a version of chris killip's photo 'simon being taken out to sea for the first time since his father drowned'. i tried to do that kid's face so many times and then it became david bowie lol
