a friend of mine pointed this out, and it's also true for me, no doubt due to a combination of demographics, what type of social media accounts I follow, etc

but it's true: I see a picture of Debbie Harry every single day of my life

Ha, I think I do too… if you follow Chris Stein on Twitterx you’re already there. The crazy thing is there does not seem to be a bad picture of her, ever.

I've had a crush on her since I was 13.

Last year, I hung out in the ruins of Stevenson's villa in Bournemouth, where he wrote Jekyll & Hyde gripped by fevers and convulsions and nightmares. Bournemouth is this weird mix of extreme wealth and tawdry seaside cheapness; the town centre simmers with barely suppressed violence. But there's another aspect to it - of steep sandstone gullies and huge holm oaks that must be largely the same as when Stevenson was there. I was amazed at how many people were in the villa's grounds. I mean, it was me and two other people but that seems a lot for a minor(?) literary figure and a ruined old house. We were all kind of fevered ourselves: reading, pacing the floors of the old kitchen where he welcomed Henry James on cold winter evenings.

I saw the Shelley tomb as well. Weird day.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Sunday, 19 May 2024 18:19 (one week ago) link

I had never actually seen a picture of Gary Cooper and now I can't stop staring at his face trying to work out what makes it so weird and so pretty at the same time.

He looks like a drag king version of William S. Hart (an earlier Western star):

Lots of people never have, Tom! He doesn't have a Hitchcock collab or xmas favourite to keep him in the public consciousness, High Noon prob his most high profile role now and that's hardly ubiquitous.

Gary Cooper had a reputation for swinging in his early years.

If so, he was definitely corked by the time of Love In The Afternoon and Man of The West (both made in his late '50s!)

super dooper!

He's kinda been this underrated presence for decades now. First saw him in the Fatal Vision miniseries, then in this series that, to my honest surprise, ran for three years (I remember seeing the pilot when it aired but that was it).

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 May 2024 23:37 (one week ago) link

There's this pretty obscure late '90s indie called Kiss The Sky that I saw a bit of one time on late night TV, and even in edited for broadcast form it had a fairly graphic threesome scene with Cole, William Petersen and Sheryl Lee (?). Thought at the time about how that's alotta people's fantasies being played out onscreen.

this reminds me that FB now constantly shows me pics from a group called "Old Pretty Celebs" and the celebs are often like....Jennifer Aniston

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 20 May 2024 23:59 (one week ago) link

^^I got one with ScarJo & T.Birch in Ghost World!

Like, I'm between them in age...

young kipling kinda hot. who knew? you always just see old man photos of him.

There is a Kipling story called "In the Same Boat" where a man and a woman (both clearly specified by the story to be super hot) are set up to meet each other because they share the same neuroses and weird obsessive behaviors, and they bond and help each other to recovery, and yet both of them immediately reject the idea of anything romantic between them; it's never explained why, but you get the sense that their connection runs so deep that any attraction between them would feel wrong - not incestuous, precisely, but a similar kind of instinctive taboo. This is how I feel about the idea of Kipling being hot. My whole soul rejects it, and I don't think this is a comment on his looks but rather on how deeply I identify with his writing.

I went through most of the vintage Bonds when they were all on Prime last year. A couple takeaways:

Carey Lowell in License To Kill is hella underrated: she's handy with a shotgun, can ably hold the reins in a getaway, and looks like a Nagal painting come to life.

Mia Hama and Akiko Wakabayashi from You Only Live Twice are two totally underappreciated smoke shows.
