i love that. somehow it just hits. not that i'm some authority on your work or art in general, but maybe my favorite thing i've seen you do! doesn't seem like you have any trouble selling your paintings, but i would definitely buy that and display it prominently!!

thanks so much! the last few i've made and posted here have all been 9"x6", smaller than what i usually work with, and loosely based off of plates in a book a friend recently gave me, "the complete encyclopedia of illustration", from 1851. that last one started from this:

i initially included the double arc/rainbow and the plants on the left, but the rainbows looked cheesy and the plants were monumentally horrible so i covered them up with a box :)

minor correction: i definitely have tons of trouble selling my work!! ooof. honestly, for every piece i sell (not that many), there are generally 2-4 false alarms where someone is very interested and then sobers up the next morning and realizes that no, no they are not. lol! hey, i've been there.

but most of that trouble is on my end, lacking the willpower and confidence to continually push things out to people to sell. i did sell a decent amount when i first got started, but a lot of that was that i was out of my mind and dropped a lot of inhibitions, which led a lot of just "please buy my art, it costs this much" kind of sales. (heavily related - i think the other part of my early success was that i was going through a lot in my personal life and my friends wanted to help me out and support me through buying my art. i don't discount that at all - i think, at least for people who aren't rich, it's common to start off with heavy support from friends).

but necessity is the mother of invention doing what you've been putting off forever, so i think i will have to try to sell stuff this month just to get by. i have an awesome new part-time job (media archivist!) i'm starting in a few days, but it's only 15 hours a week so it's kind of a subsistence job, and unfortunately i completely emptied out my savings/retirement account to $0 over the past 2 years, so i don't have enough money for rent on feb 1 :( hence, if you follow me on instagram or whatever you'll probably see a renewed entrepreneurial spirit (blllllegggh!!!) over the next few weeks lol!

the good news is that if i can make it through the next 30-60 days i think i'm going to be in a good spot moving forward! and honestly, if i can sell just one of my larger paintings for $700-1200 i will be all set, i think.

(sidenote: goddamn, even a modicum of universal basic income would be a LIFECHANGER for so many people)

i finished up the flyer with the band names painted on separate cardboard pieces and places on top - with some lighting in my kitchen + my iphone the 'briefcases' cast small shadows. i might mess around with this more in the future (collaging on top of painted canvas/paper, creating more 3d space

thank you! it's been 'in progress' for so long that i can no longer see it, but i'm glad to move on! it's going to be rolled up in a closet for the foreseeable future but i hope to show it in some sort of covid exhibition some day, if there ever is one. i think one of my original thoughts was to do something brutally confronting, like with a hospital bed and characters and text for some of them. i'm glad that i gave it a ton of time and made it less direct
