Today the NYT push alerted a headline "I'm Rubber, You're Glue" in reference to Trump and these very concerns and I had a similar "what in god's name happened to everything" moment

Yeah - every now and again the sheer deranged nature of modern American political life does smack one about the head and face

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution today had extensive coverage on the Willis allegations and how they might affect the Trump indictment. I do not remember a single line questioning whether the allegations were true. There was, however, a front-page story on her supposed paramour.

The judge went out of his way to accommodate Trump, and of course it wasn't enough.

The denial of the request for Trump to speak was classic.

After explicitly being told 'these are the conditions. they are not negotiable. take it or leave it', I like how Trump's lawyer shows the judge who's really the boss here by writing "Mr. Trump will speak tomorrow". When you represent Trump you set a torch to your professional standing and then trample the ashes in case there's anything left of it.

Trump reflects the eschatologically dwindling evangelical Xtian population's certainty that everyone else around them is evil?

Wack Snyder (Eric H.), Thursday, 11 January 2024 15:15 (two years ago)

he probably still would have appealed to a lot of those voters in the 90s, feel like the big difference with his forward trajectory is that he started appealing to a significantly greater percentage of people who really should fucking know better.

it's a circus that never ends. here's hoping Trump's DC trial on the Jan 6 conspiracy doesn't devolve into Trump spouting nonsense as badly as this one has.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:54 (two years ago)

It hasnt really been that bad imo! Judge may have been a trifle too clever at times but all his nonsense has been outside the courtroom bc when he’s in court he has to shut the fuck up

Trump telling senior citizens to risk their lives braving subzero temps for him in the Iowa caucuses: "you can't sit home," Trump said. "if you're sick as a dog... Even if you vote and then pass away, it's worth it."

Even if you were kidding, I’d 100% believe it.

"If you want to save America from crooked Joe Biden, you must go caucus tomorrow. First step, very first step," the former president said at the tail end of a 100-minute speech in Indianola. "We're gonna do it. We're gonna do it big. You got to get out."

"You can't sit home," Trump added, raising his voice. "If you're sick as a dog, you say: 'God, I gotta make it.' Even if you vote and then pass away, it's worth it."

Trump paused to let his supporters laugh before pressing on.

"If you're sick, if you're just so sick, you can't, darling, I don't think I can. Get up. Get up. You get up, you're gonna vote," Trump said, imitating a woman urging her husband to vote. "Yes, darling, because ultimately, we know who calls the shots, right?"

Republican supporters cheered for the former president's caricature.

Trump added that the caucuses would be held indoors and voters would "all be safe."

"But you gotta get up, you gotta vote, because it has nothing to do with anything but taking our nation back, and that's the biggest thing there is," Trump said.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 January 2024 15:15 (two years ago)

I don't mind if those voters die on their way to vote for Trump in a snowstorm tbh

My senior citizen mom was thinking about going to caucus with whoever has the biggest non-trump group in her district but the weather plus having to register as a Republican will probably keep her at home.

Anything to distract, still:

Trump has been muttering loudly & slamming his hand at counsel’s table.

Judge Kaplan now, before the jury was brought back in says: “before we bring in the jury I’m just going to ask Mr. Trump to take special care to keep his voice down so the jury does not overhear it.”

— Katie Phang (@KatiePhang) January 17, 2024

Kaplan threatened to kick Trump out of court after Carroll counsel complained again about Trump's commentary. Kaplan: "Mr. Trump has the right to be present here. That right can be forfeited." He continued: "Mr. Trump, I hope I don’t have to consider excluding you from the trial"

Wack Snyder (Eric H.), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 18:40 (two years ago)

Reporters in the courtroom heard Trump say, “I would love it.”

“I know you would,” Kaplan said. “You just can’t control yourself in this circumstance apparently.”

and then everything resumes as-is because he gets all the warnings in the world because nobody wants to give him the press of being thrown out of the courtroom

Disco Biollante (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 18:42 (two years ago)

I hope E Jean Carroll gets in a 'See you next time!' on her way out of the courthouse

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 17 January 2024 18:44 (two years ago)

Why does Trump care about this trial so much? Why not be out giving speeches somewhere? He just needs the fuel for the persecution narrative that badly?
