oh i see a thermal carafe. not a thermos. sorry there were dozens of words in Josh's post, was hard to keep track.

what you say is true but by no means (lukas), Sunday, 7 January 2024 02:26 (four months ago) link

I was just talking to another middle school parent about the bizarre Stanley craze among pre-teen girls. Apparently the same marketing whiz who revived crocs is behind it.

If your old thermos is losing its insulating properties you could try giving it a thorough cleaning so the reflective glass interior works at maximum efficiency or else wrap it in a further insulating layer. Or both. If those don't work, replace it.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 7 January 2024 04:12 (four months ago) link

Yeah, maybe I'll give it a good clean.

The Stanley thing, the story I heard is some Mormon mom in Utah spread a viral video of her ice staying frozen in one of those things after a car fire, which prompted a rush to buy the thermoses. Now they have limited edition models and Starbucks tie-ins and people are lining up at Target to buy them, and so on. But maybe the fresh marketing approach preceded the viral video? I've also heard the cup's trendy spread was related to "Mormon soda culture." Did you know some Mormons drink a concoction called "dirty soda," which is a mix of soda and milk? I thought Laverne DeFazio was the only one that did that.

There is a fringe millennial on set today w one of those gigantic stanley thermoses and she keeps calling it her stanley cup and tittering so i think the cartoonishness also appeals

I have a zojirushi bottle (not a carafe) that’s about 7 years old that if I put fresh coffee into, it will barely not burn me after about 12 hours. I typically use it as a thermos to pour from as I can’t drink straight from it.

Stopped by a George Howell coffee in Boston for the first time since before the pandemic - I forgot how wonderful this stuff is. Definitely make the trip if you can, I always get a cup and then a bag to take back home to NY.

(I've only had his coffee in recent years - I've never experienced his famed shops before his short-lived retirement. I guess those were the ones that carried the original Frappucino he invented and were the same ones he sold to Starbucks?)

Surprised I didn't know about this guy. Maybe I'll order some beans as a sidetrack from the Tandem subscription (which always turns out to be just a hair short of the amount of beans I need anyway).

https://www.byk-instruments.com/en/color-influences-taste

Research studies conducted over the last 60 years in different countries showed a remarkable degree of consistency when people are asked to match colors and basic tastes. The physical properties of the serving cup are strongly tied to the experience of flavor of the beverages being consumed from them. Moreover, the color has an effect on our temperature sensation of the warmth for coffee [1], the perceived level of carbonation of water samples [2], the perceived intensity of certain flavors and simply the basic tastes in beverages.

I did end up getting a Zojirushi thermal carafe, and it's been working great so far. I actually bought two, to compare. Each was 1L in volume, but the designs were wildly different. One was the usual kind of short and stout metal kind of carafe, with a spring loaded lid, the other was taller and brighter and skinnier and plastic (on the outside), with a screw on lid, but both held the same amount of liquid. My family took one look at the tall skinny one and immediately gonged it, since it looked so huge on the counter.

the problem with the plant milks is they have no body, except for coconut ones but then your coffee tastes like coconut, personally i like coconut and its not bad in coffee but it kinda makes it a flavored coffee, i know some people tummies cant take dairy, i will pray for you, to drink your coffee black haha

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 January 2024 15:10 (four months ago) link

My brother has a ridiculous Starbucks order but it generates a delicious drink and the baristas have never batted an eye at it: half-sweet extra hot oat milk dirty chai latte

flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 21 January 2024 15:12 (four months ago) link

also plant milks most dont taste like much, just a flat vegetal note, so they just put a tons of sugar in them, sad

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 January 2024 15:12 (four months ago) link

whats does extra hot mean in that depraved context

We have this Ikea carafe, which does a great job: https://www.amazon.com/Ikea-Behovd-Vacuum-Thermos-Carafe/dp/B075DJ8DZX/ref=asc_df_B075DJ8DZX/

But my wife has two Zojirushi thermoses and loves them, they do good work.

starbucks is a wild place lol, its not good but it is amazing

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 January 2024 15:22 (four months ago) link

i prefer coffee black, milk makes it way too heavy for me, so oat milk is basically perfect if i want a lil somethin difft

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 21 January 2024 15:23 (four months ago) link

i hope mcdonalds actually does its coffee chain, that shits next level, makes starbucks look like a diner

lag∞n, Sunday, 21 January 2024 15:24 (four months ago) link

I prefer a tiny dash of whole milk, which adds just enough sweetness and texture to balance a dark roast. Milk alternatives, like oat or almond or soy, I find they distract from rather than complement the taste of the coffee.

BTW, I was in Amsterdam, talking with a guy from Portugal, and he told me about the first time he had Starbucks, to see what the hype was about. I was expecting shit-talk, but he ended with nothing but effusive praise, saying he much preferred it to most coffee in Amsterdam. Me and this other American guy kind of looked at him and shrugged, like, "it's ok, if that's all you got." It's not my preferred coffee, but I'll always defend Starbucks, from an American perspective, because they almost single-handedly ensured that now you can get acceptable coffee in the States. Growing up, before that, options included basically McDonald's, and hell, the success of Starbucks even forced McDonald's to up their coffee game.

european coffee is terrible unless you’re in italy, is how i break it down to an extent

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 21 January 2024 15:34 (four months ago) link

It’s so funny to me, growing up watching ads for 90s instant coffee that touted “France” and “Vienna” as these exquisite coffee destinations, only to visit as an adult and realize how low the bar was in those places

Coffee in Norway is excellent, it should be said

McCafe’s espresso almost seems lab-designed to “taste better than a Starbucks espresso” without actually being good espresso in its own right
