#3 worst actor nomination thread

If an actor has a comfort zone they can easily fall into and deliver the goods every time our, they can't contend for this thread. Actually think actors like this frequently get too little credit compared to their more celebrated contemporaries, whose eclecticism and ability to be "versatile" means you hardly see their true, comfortable self. Which isn't to say actors who deal in the latter aren't quite frequently amazing, obv.

I watched Monsters Ball twice, the second time with a guy I was crushing on; he liked the movie, I went limp, I saw him one more time.

Bloom qualifies because even his two major franchise roles feel like desperate effort. Everyone discusses "a diversion" but for me it's all about the delivery of "a red sun rises...blood has been spilt this night"....stopping and delivering the line and you can practically see his brain counting down to the mark when he's supposed to resume running.

i think we set out that the performer is question should have had a comparable career but we can relax that one

edge of tomorrow was probably the last time I enjoyed cruise as an actor

Keira Knightley is a real test of the bar as is portman i think

rogue nation or maverick prob his best movies and id not have said he was any different (or his being him) was a bigger or smaller part of any of them (id stress not a criticism of edge of tomorrow which was super until it had to end)

i raised portman/knightley as a pair (and rightley so) earlier in thread i hid nothing

portman does all of her acting with her (googles) upper molars

Bf and I chatted Andie Macdowell yesterday— she is absolutely amazingly bad in everything, even Maid I would argue, but there is nevertheless something so likeable about her

I haven't seen Maverick yet, and the more recent MI movies have all blurred together for me + haven't seen the newest one.

perhaps I'm just easily taken in by the trick of Mr Movie Star playing weak or cowardly as in EoT (or EWS, for that matter). likewise I enjoyed him playing a crap dad in War of the Worlds

McDowell is def v likeable and charming and also id argue model-turned-actor, id need reminding which role she has ever had that demanded more of her than that

richards, in comparison, has definitely had fun in a few things while being that girl

Bale was good in The Prestige!

He's been good in quite a few things, starting with his amazing turn in Empire of the Sun, although I think he is now mostly playing "Christian Bale."

While my mind is on monsters from the 90s, I never liked Greg Kinnear in anything, and thought he was abjectly terrible in As Good As It Gets and Little Miss Sunshine; but even worse than him is Cuba Gooding Jr, I cannot think of a less-deserving acting Oscar winner

id have put in a much stronger defence of bale if id felt it needed tbh but his turn in the big short alone is tiers above the bar

kinnear played the other half of matt damon in a comedy which is something but agreed hes watery eyed and worthy in all else besides

Cuba Gooding Jr also a good shout, I’ve seen him in several things according to his filmography and I couldn’t tell you a single thing about any of them. Whether that crosses the line from egregiously bland to Bloom country is another debate.

Well-cast, yes.

I enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow enough to watch it a few times, but I don't think Tom Cruise brought much to it - he was just an easily replaceable part (as long as he wasn't replaced by someone who'd totally stink it up like Matt Damon) of an impressive sci-fi movie - but I would say that cos I can't stand the fucking guy.

the J Gyllenhaalster would have been a better casting choice imo

id say you wouldn't quickly swap his roles in the martian or the informant with cruise to good effect for starters

Damon's an example of an actor who's relaxed on hitting middle age and is a genuine pleasure to watch like he never was even 25 years ago (see: Paul Newman).

Late nom here for Holly Hunter. I will admit to not havng seen her in any of her award-winning roles. But her performances in everything I have encountered her in, namely Crash, Copycat and a couple of Coen Bros, enraged me beyond belief. The prim expression on her face as she enunciates the dialogue as if reading off a cue sheet! Her lack of a lack of screen presence, which might at least make her tolerable! Sorry, I know everyone thinks she's a genius but she's my #1 most hated actor, beyond even Jack Black in onscreen obnoxiousness.

not that i agree but the passion and case made are 8/10 imo

i believe the criticisms actually stand for her performance in broadcast news tbph but her turn in top of the lake is another thing entirely

I have not seen much late period Damon because a lot of his movies are ones that I avoid, so fair enough if he is aging gracefully. But that's what bothers me about Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, he's playing a character who was probably imagined by the screenwriters as 25-30 years younger than him.

HH's primness is part of the attraction in my opinion
