Righto!

I'm sure he's been mentioned already and I don't think anyone likes him but I just watched Bradley Cooper in Maestro and he's so terrible in it

His voice is so nasal in trying to replicate Bernstein’s Katherine Hepburnish upper class New England accent

Expansion to Mackerel (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:02 (eight months ago) link

sorry fgti they are terrible takes i must agree

your (correct) use of pronouns

Not quite sure what you mean.

I was probably pretty vague; I meant that Weaving was the best part of the film, imho.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:17 (eight months ago) link

you were totally clear tbh

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:19 (eight months ago) link

Gal Gadot surely warrants mention.

sorry fgti they are terrible takes i must agree

Maybe you should add “Irish actors” to the perpetually-safe bin along with “stunt-cast musician cameos”

Tell me a good G Byrne/Gleeson Jr. performance and I’ll watch it, and eat my words if you are correct

Miller's Crossing leaps to mind

Excellent movie, no comment on man’s performance

Guy Pearce also great in Priscilla, remember him as good in LA Confidential but it’s been a while.

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:44 (eight months ago) link

Also Gabriel Byrne is not good apart from Millers Crossing

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:44 (eight months ago) link

I mean, he is the lead. It's been 30 years, but I remember his performance as being creditable.

I seem to remember him not being terrible in The Usual Suspects.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:46 (eight months ago) link

Guy Pearce is not just good but very underrated (by the industry, which does not give him the size or quality of roles he deserves).

Hugo Weaving is a pretty bad actor. He would do better to embrace Willem Dafoe-ness than to keep on with the stiff-jaw bulging-eyes thing.

(His daughter Samara Weaving is much better than he is, but she's stuck in a "when you can't afford Margot Robbie" niche.)

Also Gabriel Byrne is not good apart from Millers Crossing

Thanks for posting this.. I love his face and his voice and by all rights he should be incredible but he just drears up everything I see him in, most recently Hereditary, where he was outclassed by everyone even the children

I should rewatch Miller’s Crossing, I adore that film— Turturro just dominates in everything he appears and I may’ve just missed an excellent performance from Byrne

he just drears up everything

I feel the same about Liam Neeson. I've never understood his appeal.

Ernest Borgnine
Angela Lansbury

Marcel, Thursday, 28 December 2023 22:44 (eight months ago) link

He kinda drears up Millers Crossing too, but it's a feature-not-a-bug there.

By coincidence my wife and I rewatched L.A. Confidential last night and I thought Pearce was pretty good in it, the best of a hammy and clumsy bunch. (The ADR glaringly bad.)

that's when I reach for my copy of Revolver (WmC), Thursday, 28 December 2023 22:44 (eight months ago) link

hes incredible in millers crossing

i may agree about the rest of his career

gleeson jr in his sketch comedy alone doesnt qualify for the depths on what we need in the thread

guy pearce was brilliant only this year in that damien lewis/cambridge spy thing for tv

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 22:45 (eight months ago) link

Ernest Borgnine

LOL

The best bad actor of all time was probably Charlton Heston.

his total inability to transmit a recognizable human emotion through the screen while being the romantic lead of a movie, in fact he's pretty much in every scene is really incredible, to say nothing of his... attempts(?) to play off kirsten dunst's lethal overdoses of quirk

i fucking love elizabethtown for the record, nothing like it!!!!

Sarah Polley?

I mean as your unnamed stinky actor who hasn’t been in a lot of things; has good politics; Canadian.

No she’s American, not the best politics, but good, Sarah Polley good in everything btw just a hard ray of light

oh, just that the matrix was directed by two women - once i realized you were talking about weaving it was pretty clear that you weren't talking about the film's directors

i don't have to watch it; i've been to e-town. what a terrible, depressing place. i'm glad my friend was able to get out.

I liked Byrne in The Usual Suspects. He was good in Jindabyne too, where his drear is put to good use.

My vote, even though I quite like him on screen, is Michael Caine.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 29 December 2023 20:15 (eight months ago) link
