Ah no

Well I was right

tbf, I have never seen Priscilla Queen of the Desert

I am quite fond of him in The Matrix, I can tolerate him as Elrond.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 December 2023 15:49 (four months ago) link

He does enunciate beatifully.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 December 2023 15:50 (four months ago) link

*beautifully

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 December 2023 15:50 (four months ago) link

over enunciate tho

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 15:52 (four months ago) link

"I was there the day the strength of men failed"

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 December 2023 15:54 (four months ago) link

Could be from The Matrix or LOTR.

Weaving often doesn’t tone down his stage style for the screen but is great or fine in Proof, Priscilla, Bodyline, Bangkok Hilton, The Interview, Mystery Road, The Dressmaker, Royal Hotel et al

Now you might observe that most of these are clustered before he started doing things for money on American schedules, but I couldn’t possibly comment

bae (sic), Thursday, 28 December 2023 18:12 (four months ago) link

Yes, The Interview is good as well!

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 18:16 (four months ago) link

i am pleased to be able to play the other role itt for a change ty guys

Come on, he made The Matrix.

once i got past the dramatic urge to yell at you for your (correct) use of pronouns my mind immediately jumped to this

also one hell of a chin. definite "writer's hair" though.

I'm sure he's been mentioned already and I don't think anyone likes him but I just watched Bradley Cooper in Maestro and he's so terrible in it

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 28 December 2023 20:07 (four months ago) link

I’ve always hated Hugo Weaving. Guy Pearce too.

Bryce Dallas Howard is bad, but I feel sorry for her bc she always seems like she’s who people call when “we can’t afford Jessica Chastain”

Can’t stand Evan Rachel Wood, but I haven’t seen Kajillionaire yet, and she was good as Madonna

Is Domnhall Gleeson an option? I don’t like him at all

Terrible takes, please leave the thread

His voice is so nasal in trying to replicate Bernstein’s Katherine Hepburnish upper class New England accent

your (correct) use of pronouns

Not quite sure what you mean.

I was probably pretty vague; I meant that Weaving was the best part of the film, imho.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:17 (four months ago) link

you were totally clear tbh

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:19 (four months ago) link

Gal Gadot surely warrants mention.

Maybe you should add “Irish actors” to the perpetually-safe bin along with “stunt-cast musician cameos”

Tell me a good G Byrne/Gleeson Jr. performance and I’ll watch it, and eat my words if you are correct

Excellent movie, no comment on man’s performance

Guy Pearce also great in Priscilla, remember him as good in LA Confidential but it’s been a while.

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:44 (four months ago) link

Also Gabriel Byrne is not good apart from Millers Crossing

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:44 (four months ago) link

I mean, he is the lead. It's been 30 years, but I remember his performance as being creditable.

I seem to remember him not being terrible in The Usual Suspects.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 December 2023 21:46 (four months ago) link

Guy Pearce is not just good but very underrated (by the industry, which does not give him the size or quality of roles he deserves).

Hugo Weaving is a pretty bad actor. He would do better to embrace Willem Dafoe-ness than to keep on with the stiff-jaw bulging-eyes thing.

(His daughter Samara Weaving is much better than he is, but she's stuck in a "when you can't afford Margot Robbie" niche.)

Also Gabriel Byrne is not good apart from Millers Crossing

Thanks for posting this.. I love his face and his voice and by all rights he should be incredible but he just drears up everything I see him in, most recently Hereditary, where he was outclassed by everyone even the children

I should rewatch Miller’s Crossing, I adore that film— Turturro just dominates in everything he appears and I may’ve just missed an excellent performance from Byrne

I feel the same about Liam Neeson. I've never understood his appeal.

Ernest Borgnine
Angela Lansbury

Marcel, Thursday, 28 December 2023 22:44 (four months ago) link

He kinda drears up Millers Crossing too, but it's a feature-not-a-bug there.

By coincidence my wife and I rewatched L.A. Confidential last night and I thought Pearce was pretty good in it, the best of a hammy and clumsy bunch. (The ADR glaringly bad.)

that's when I reach for my copy of Revolver (WmC), Thursday, 28 December 2023 22:44 (four months ago) link

hes incredible in millers crossing

i may agree about the rest of his career

gleeson jr in his sketch comedy alone doesnt qualify for the depths on what we need in the thread

guy pearce was brilliant only this year in that damien lewis/cambridge spy thing for tv

his total inability to transmit a recognizable human emotion through the screen while being the romantic lead of a movie, in fact he's pretty much in every scene is really incredible, to say nothing of his... attempts(?) to play off kirsten dunst's lethal overdoses of quirk

i fucking love elizabethtown for the record, nothing like it!!!!

My pick: I can't watch Ben Mendelsohn in anything. He oozes falsity.
