i had eggnog in my coffee this morning
― budo jeru, Thursday, 14 December 2023 20:47 (two years ago)
It’s the Bisto of both worlds.
Uh what?
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 14 December 2023 20:49 (two years ago)
I wonder what a full patty of beef would taste like with chocolate
― | (Latham Green), Thursday, 14 December 2023 20:57 (two years ago)
xp Bisto is a brand of gravy powder here. You mix the powder (or granules, I guess) with juices from the roast meat. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisto
― mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Thursday, 14 December 2023 21:07 (two years ago)
That's what my googling revealed, and I thought, That can't possibly be right.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 14 December 2023 21:09 (two years ago)
Oh it’s delicious tbh, or at least the powder is. Think granules are when you don’t use it with meat juices.
― mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Thursday, 14 December 2023 21:17 (two years ago)
I get that, but on a donut?
I thought it was a misspelling of "Bistro."
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 14 December 2023 21:21 (two years ago)
Sounds like a limited edition gimmick product ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
― mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Thursday, 14 December 2023 21:31 (two years ago)
*ahem* A hand finished limited edition gimmick product.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 14 December 2023 21:33 (two years ago)
G is correct. Bisto is very good for instant gravy but it has no business ever being anywhere near a donut gimmick or otherwise.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 14 December 2023 22:41 (two years ago)
The choc sauce/fries thing reminds me of how people dip the fries in the shakes at Wendy's. Isn't that a thing? I'd try that too.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 14 December 2023 22:43 (two years ago)
Yeah, def a thing. Personally never done that, but know quite a few people that are regular Wendy's frosty fry dippers.

― | (Latham Green), Friday, 15 December 2023 15:40 (two years ago)
today as an experiment i recycled a whole boxful of grounds, to try and get a second cups-worth from them
why would you do this to yourself? it's like smoking a refry you found in an ash tray. I think grounds make pretty good compost/fertilizer
― beard papa, Friday, 15 December 2023 20:42 (two years ago)
Yeah mine go in the compost.
I’d sooner just drink cheap coffee than reuse grinds.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good thermal carafe? The one we have (Thermos branded) has been losing its heat retention, for some reason, but when I researched replacements all the recommended ones (Fellow, Hario) seemed way too small, with capacities around 600mL. We usually drink about four cups a day, total, so I was thinking something that could handle closer to a liter in capacity.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 January 2024 23:34 (two years ago)
we have an old model capresso that rules, 10 cups, stays hot for hoursthis is current modelhttps://www.capresso.com/st300.html

I was just talking to another middle school parent about the bizarre Stanley craze among pre-teen girls. Apparently the same marketing whiz who revived crocs is behind it.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 7 January 2024 03:51 (two years ago)
If your old thermos is losing its insulating properties you could try giving it a thorough cleaning so the reflective glass interior works at maximum efficiency or else wrap it in a further insulating layer. Or both. If those don't work, replace it.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 7 January 2024 04:12 (two years ago)
Yeah, maybe I'll give it a good clean.
The Stanley thing, the story I heard is some Mormon mom in Utah spread a viral video of her ice staying frozen in one of those things after a car fire, which prompted a rush to buy the thermoses. Now they have limited edition models and Starbucks tie-ins and people are lining up at Target to buy them, and so on. But maybe the fresh marketing approach preceded the viral video? I've also heard the cup's trendy spread was related to "Mormon soda culture." Did you know some Mormons drink a concoction called "dirty soda," which is a mix of soda and milk? I thought Laverne DeFazio was the only one that did that.

zojirushi ofc

There is a fringe millennial on set today w one of those gigantic stanley thermoses and she keeps calling it her stanley cup and tittering so i think the cartoonishness also appeals

I have a zojirushi bottle (not a carafe) that’s about 7 years old that if I put fresh coffee into, it will barely not burn me after about 12 hours. I typically use it as a thermos to pour from as I can’t drink straight from it.
― john shopkins (naus), Saturday, 13 January 2024 10:07 (two years ago)
Stopped by a George Howell coffee in Boston for the first time since before the pandemic - I forgot how wonderful this stuff is. Definitely make the trip if you can, I always get a cup and then a bag to take back home to NY.
(I've only had his coffee in recent years - I've never experienced his famed shops before his short-lived retirement. I guess those were the ones that carried the original Frappucino he invented and were the same ones he sold to Starbucks?)
― birdistheword, Saturday, 13 January 2024 19:20 (two years ago)
oh thats the coffee connection guy, classic boston institution

he had a lot of powerpoint slides about coffee production and we did a few tastings to break things up. lots of cool jungle shots iirc.

Surprised I didn't know about this guy. Maybe I'll order some beans as a sidetrack from the Tandem subscription (which always turns out to be just a hair short of the amount of beans I need anyway).
