This newfound interest in Twitter as an influence network culminated in 2022, when Musk first announced he wanted to build a Twitter substitute (duplicate), before, in April, instead, offering to buy it (infiltrate). After his announcement, his phone started blowing up with texts from powerful folks in both tech and politics, including one still unknown sender who literally outlined a four step plan for reinventing Twitter that could basically be condensed down into “undermine, infiltrate, undermine, duplicate.”

As you can see, the assumption was that users and, more importantly, advertisers would stick around as Musk cannibalized Twitter. And now we know they haven’t. Users are fleeing, especially the important ones, and advertisers are finally beginning to move on, as well. This text is only part of the conversation, but it’s extremely funny that nowhere amid this supervillain monologue was it ever questioned if Twitter would continue to even be relevant as it transformed into Gab. Perhaps Musk didn’t have the “savvy cultural/political view” to pull it off.

Don't bother making your own social media, just make a discord or something

there used to be a social media platform called Ning that you could use to spin up a community-based site, but I think they went away and also they sucked. but it was not a bad idea.

if you want to make the killer new social app you gotta build it yourself with the design-functionality being a deep expression of the idea of what it is, except you might be able to make some sort of twitter clone right now for particular reasons lol

i kinda think the era of pure social media is over tho, which doesnt mean social features wont live on, like tiktok has the famous like button but its more of a place to consume professionalish videos than a place for social posting

instagram is much more like tiktok than it once was and so forth

dan an interesting idea for building a new social network is to make the letterboxed of x, ie devoted to one topic and designed around that particularly rather than just copying facebook, like a letterboxed post is a review, idk what you would do particularly for music but itd be worth thinking through, prob someone has already made one, but ive never heard of it so it hasnt caught on

There are some aspects of Letterboxd that I'm sure some see as shortcomings (e.g. no DMs) but that heavily contribute to it being the only social media thing I use at all anymore outside of ILX. Like you have to cultivate relationships out in the open by engaging with other people's output.

It's kind of fascinating to watch this real-time disintegration of social media sites. It's like a visual depiction of a decline into senility.

Except that it's intentional.

I mean, yeah, the overall demolition project is intentional, but I'm talking more about the incidental, entropic fallout of that project. I'm assuming that Elon didn't necessarily intend to direct users to a slew of Japanese fishing tweets for absolutely no reason.

I'm confused about bluesky. I go there and I just see mostly posts from one person. Her posts, here reposts, her comments. I can't tell if she's just THAT much more post crazy than everybody else I follow or if blue sky decided I need to mostly see her content at the expense of everybody else.

Also though you can set filters in bsky for like, only posts, no reposts etc. or only friends or only news etc

not interested in just a music site, the ultimate goal is to not have it be about music. Id just use that to build an initially community and get discussion going. But as people were enjoying it they'd talk about other topics and invite their friends and then I'd put facebook out of business.
