Hmm. I go on now and people are posting vids from the protests they’re at.

As someone constantly recovering from numerous self-inflicted cooking wounds, I very much like the look of that finger protector you're all being so disparaging about.

My chrome extension still successfully keeps twitter cleaned up for me (and also keeps it called twitter). But the time has come to move on. My prob is actually the number of people I follow who *haven't* left yet. Reporters, writers, comedians. Or maybe they have and just moved somewhere other than Bluesky, but fuck scouring more than one of these sites at a time. That's like a distraction in search of a distraction. I think I'll just have to get back in the habit of getting the news *after* it happens rather than while it is happening.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 November 2023 21:38 (six months ago) link
Oh yeah, I wasn't implying that they haven't taken a big revenue hit, just more that all those big names backing away didn't do anything prevent the site as a whole from being driven directly into the fascist ditch.

A friend posted the other day "How much longer do news organizations have to say 'X (formerly known as Twitter)." It's a good question, but I think the answer is, a good long while. X is such a stupidly generic name that if you just drop it into a news story people who are not actually engaged with social media probably still don't know what it means (while they have definitely heard of Twitter).

The thing about those ads is that no ad has ever influenced me to buy an IBM or Apple, but I've definitely impulse-purchased cool, dumb gadgets that have shown up in my social media feeds.

Don't know about twitter, but my Adblock app started failing to block youtube ads recently. So I changed to UBlock which now works fine.

youtube refused to show me videos on chrome with ublock demande that i turn it off, so i switched to firefox with ublock which worked for a while but then youtube refused again, so i switched to brave which has a built in adblocker and so far thats working
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:29 (six months ago) link
yeah youtube is infuriating, they're very good about sniffing for any adblockers now which makes using youtube for anything long impossible. I'm not fucking paying for youtube.

its interesting that adblockers work at all on youtube youd think that they could come up with a scheme where that wasnt so but maybe its just not worth their while
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:41 (six months ago) link
They have to encode the ads into the video streams on the fly so there wasn’t a separate request for your browser to key on
― G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:44 (six months ago) link
youtube is absolutely worth paying for if you have kids and/or ever watch youtube on something other than a computer with an ad blocker
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:45 (six months ago) link
what about just making the rest of the video unavailable until the length of the ad has elapsed so even if its blocked you still have to wait just to be annoying

― 龜, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:48 (six months ago) link

― lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:48 (six months ago) link
Both Firefox and Chrome UBlock work on youtube, you just need to keep your browser versions and extension/add-ons updated.
― citation needed (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:48 (six months ago) link
i read somewhere that youtube is relying on fingerprinting too so you need to use a browser that has anti-fingerprinting built in like firefox or brave
youtube stopped threatening me tho so i'm still just using chrome/ublock
although relying on chrome has a whiff of 'the masters tools will never dismantle the masters house' haha
