It’s a Humanitarian Pause

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 17 November 2023 20:13 (two years ago)

the benefit of pausing is that it gives apple the time to turn toward the camera, break the 4th the wall, and really level with the consumer before resuming

i really like that!! (z_tbd), Friday, 17 November 2023 20:16 (two years ago)

I was thinking, sure, nice move, but remember when all those big companies "paused" shortly after Elon purchased it in the first place and they mostly came back and it made no difference at all?

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 17 November 2023 20:18 (two years ago)

eh i think ad revenue is still down significantly

, Friday, 17 November 2023 20:22 (two years ago)

yeah I thought it was a fact that their revenue was down like 70% since he bought it, plus I mean if you just hop on there now clearly the ads are uhhh quite a bit different now

I'm not really surprised they're using the word "paused", aren't people still sort of assuming he's going to sell at some point?

frogbs, Friday, 17 November 2023 20:26 (two years ago)

Who needs IBM anyway when you're still attracting advertisers of this calibre to your site?

^^i definitely see more weird junk ads than anything these days, the big companies even if they haven't given it up totally certainly appear to have pulled back

Why are you even all still looking at Twitter at this late date, who even posts anymore

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Friday, 17 November 2023 20:42 (two years ago)

its still good for sports

frogbs, Friday, 17 November 2023 20:48 (two years ago)

xpost basically everyone who always has

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 17 November 2023 20:49 (two years ago)

I saw one righteous defense, which was basically "I was here before you, asshole," and another funny defense, basically "the only reason I am still here is so that I can benefit financially from the inevitable class action suit."

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 November 2023 20:57 (two years ago)

xp i dont think that's remotely true, I'm barely on there myself unless it's to follow an NBA or NFL game I can't watch. when I go on otherwise it really does feel about half as active as it used to be

frogbs, Friday, 17 November 2023 21:04 (two years ago)

Hmm. I go on now and people are posting vids from the protests they’re at.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 17 November 2023 21:11 (two years ago)

A lot of people I follow either have left or post much less frequently.

As someone constantly recovering from numerous self-inflicted cooking wounds, I very much like the look of that finger protector you're all being so disparaging about.

I don't want to catastrophise but there's a catastrophe looming (Matt #2), Friday, 17 November 2023 21:31 (two years ago)

My chrome extension still successfully keeps twitter cleaned up for me (and also keeps it called twitter). But the time has come to move on. My prob is actually the number of people I follow who *haven't* left yet. Reporters, writers, comedians. Or maybe they have and just moved somewhere other than Bluesky, but fuck scouring more than one of these sites at a time. That's like a distraction in search of a distraction. I think I'll just have to get back in the habit of getting the news *after* it happens rather than while it is happening.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 November 2023 21:38 (two years ago)

Oh yeah, I wasn't implying that they haven't taken a big revenue hit, just more that all those big names backing away didn't do anything prevent the site as a whole from being driven directly into the fascist ditch.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 17 November 2023 21:38 (two years ago)

A friend posted the other day "How much longer do news organizations have to say 'X (formerly known as Twitter)." It's a good question, but I think the answer is, a good long while. X is such a stupidly generic name that if you just drop it into a news story people who are not actually engaged with social media probably still don't know what it means (while they have definitely heard of Twitter).

The thing about those ads is that no ad has ever influenced me to buy an IBM or Apple, but I've definitely impulse-purchased cool, dumb gadgets that have shown up in my social media feeds.

Ideally Musk and Trump will both just die and solve a bunch of problems big and small at once.

Being reported that, go figure, Yaccarino's industry pals are strongly suggesting she jump ship.

Is there a chance that Linda Yaccarino is not real? That she's some sort of AI experiment?

my adblocker seems to be not working on Twitter today, hopefully this'll correct itself quickly

Don't know about twitter, but my Adblock app started failing to block youtube ads recently. So I changed to UBlock which now works fine.

Ste, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 12:56 (two years ago)

I use ublock on Firefox, I think the forces of darkness are conspiring

Tyler Perry's Cystitis (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:19 (two years ago)

youtube refused to show me videos on chrome with ublock demande that i turn it off, so i switched to firefox with ublock which worked for a while but then youtube refused again, so i switched to brave which has a built in adblocker and so far thats working

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:29 (two years ago)

yeah youtube is infuriating, they're very good about sniffing for any adblockers now which makes using youtube for anything long impossible. I'm not fucking paying for youtube.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:38 (two years ago)

Yeah I noticed YouTube being dickish lately, thanks for the tip

Tyler Perry's Cystitis (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:38 (two years ago)

It's bad enough when the random history vids have adverts every 5 minutes

Tyler Perry's Cystitis (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:39 (two years ago)

youtube with ads is horrific

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:39 (two years ago)

its interesting that adblockers work at all on youtube youd think that they could come up with a scheme where that wasnt so but maybe its just not worth their while

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 November 2023 15:41 (two years ago)

They have to encode the ads into the video streams on the fly so there wasn’t a separate request for your browser to key on
