i'm with dmac here - the switch to sanderson is jarring and bad

, Saturday, 28 October 2023 16:29 (two years ago)

I do appreciate the (re)introduction of the quaint term "flipskirt."

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 28 October 2023 16:29 (two years ago)

no, Donaldson!

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 28 October 2023 16:40 (two years ago)

i took that as the thomas covenant guy?

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 28 October 2023 16:40 (two years ago)

Yeah, that guy. The Covenant series certainly has issues, and the final four books he cranked out some 10 years ago were completely unnecessary, but he's a much better writer than Jordan. The middle trilogy in particular is outstanding.

there are 45 instances of the word ‘gelding’ in the volume i’m currently reading

that's one 'gelding' every 13.4 pages

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 October 2023 18:15 (two years ago)

nothing really happens in book 8. even less in book 9 so far

also there are like 500 named female characters and i neither know nor care any longer to bother sorting out which are:

-aes sedai siding with elaida
-aes sedai siding with the rebels/egwene
-aes sedai from the latter spying on the former
-aes sedai who have sworn fealty to egwene
-aes sedai who have sworn fealty to rand
-aes sedai who have *not* sworn fealty to rand but still hang around him
-aes sedai who have sworn fealty to perrin ffs
-aes sedai trapped at the black tower
-black ajah
-aes sedai in the white tower hunting black ajah
-channelers of any sort who are leashed
-wavefinders/windmistresses
-kin/knitting circle/other wilders
-claimants to the lion throne of andor
-random female nobility from cairhien/tear
-women who are more handsome than pretty
-wise ones who like rand
-wise ones who, for no reason that makes any sense, prefer sevanna
-part of faile's personal militia of cairhienin cosplaying as aiel

lol, however, at hard woman inflation. at first moiraine was the hardest woman in the world, but then came siuan, and then amys, and then bair, and then sorrilea, and then alise, and then cadsuane, and . . .

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 17:15 (two years ago)

ffs sorry seandalai

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 17:16 (two years ago)

you've forgotten the ones who keep mat as a pet

, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 17:25 (two years ago)

The ones who wear knives between their breasts?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 1 November 2023 17:25 (two years ago)

yes, the widows!

there's also like 500 aiel women and the list of women in refrigerators that rand chants in his head.

, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 17:32 (two years ago)

God I had forgotten soooo much of this. Great work mookie.

ian, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 17:52 (two years ago)

the aiel maidens (with one major and two minor exceptions) do be pretty much interchangeable, no? and there's really just the one woman who do be keeping mat as a pet, yes? her it do no be hard to remember, fortune prick me

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 18:05 (two years ago)

uncanny, burn me if it isnt

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 November 2023 18:17 (two years ago)

yeah they're pretty interchangeable except rand is always impugning their toh by not letting them protect him and traveling away and all that. oh and getting killed so rand can remember their name. i found a list and none of the names except one or two jumped out at me. but then the first one i clicked i found had like 25 appearances in the books.

i think you're right only one keeps mat as a pet but i remember she may have had a few followers and there's this whole thing about how they wear marriage knives in that town.

when you said seandalai did you mean seanchan? haha

it is clearly time for ian to do a re-read

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 22:06 (two years ago)

I can try again! I tried 2021 and got to book 5? I can start from there but there is just too much I actually WANT to read, and tbh I'm not a masochist.

ian, Thursday, 2 November 2023 14:11 (two years ago)

Fuck it, I'm gonna keep going. I have nothing else to read right now.

jmm, Thursday, 2 November 2023 14:26 (two years ago)

question for those who cant get through the slog books (esp first time round) of 5, 7-10 (11?)

do ye sense check paragraphs before reading them?

it doesnt help me in a lot of my reading (which consequently is not a lot) but in this case its an absolute boon, you can cover an aes sedai chapter in seconds

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 November 2023 14:39 (two years ago)

now admittedly this does lead to questions when a character callback occurs as if you are meant to remember one braid from another but look from reading the thread thats actually just a feature anyway

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 November 2023 14:40 (two years ago)

I read everything, but probably a bit faster than normal. I'm aiming to get to the next line of dialogue, not to linger on Jordan's very essential details about how many lamps are on the mantel, etc.

jmm, Thursday, 2 November 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

skimming was actually a forgotten skill until i made asmodean teach it me

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 November 2023 14:50 (two years ago)

^^ lol

I skim! But I resent writing that makes me skim. If if it's not important don't fuckin' write it.

ian, Thursday, 2 November 2023 19:30 (two years ago)

ah not all prose need be boiled down like that imo. im not sure high fantasy lends itself to that in fact

if its repetition, now, in a narrative driven book, yeah

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 November 2023 19:54 (two years ago)

i didn't really skim until i got to the sanderson books. my theory is that jordan's style imprinted itself onto my brayne when i first read them as a 10 year old, so i will always have room in my heart for more braid tugs.

, Thursday, 2 November 2023 19:54 (two years ago)

tugging on your heartbraids nest pas

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 November 2023 20:02 (two years ago)

skimming does not come naturally to me but i can't just straight read 1000 pages of heartbroken perrin leading his lil' army back and forth and back

mookieproof, Thursday, 2 November 2023 20:50 (two years ago)

twice!

wait is it fucking three times, actually?

super mario levels of rescuing princess until it gets boring

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 November 2023 21:12 (two years ago)

perrin's arc is definitely the worst. the whole 'is he a man or will he succumb to the wolf within' arc got dropped with no resolution. also a waste of the elias character who's brought back just to help him rescue faile? and not give any more insights into how to be a wolfman? his role during the last battle was pretty minimal iirc. also the whole 'i don't want to lead, i'm just a blacksmith'. not interesting!

, Friday, 3 November 2023 14:20 (two years ago)

it got resolved with the wolf/man song climax?

oh shit no that was the muppets wasnt it

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Friday, 3 November 2023 17:00 (two years ago)

Not a rejection, but a statement that the Sitters who remained in their chairs did not mean to be lapdogs. Only a gesture, a token, according to Sheriam, but looking at Romanda’s stern face, and Lelaine’s, scarcely less so above her bare chest, Egwene was not certain of that at all. They had said it might be as many as three or four, too.

Thank you Robert Jordan for noting that her face is located above her bare chest

jmm, Sunday, 5 November 2023 15:52 (two years ago)

It would really help if he gave more of the characters titles to signify their factions and ranks. There are literally hundreds of Aes Sedai, Maidens, Wise Ones, nobles, etc., and he always just calls them by their single-word names even at the start of a scene. I stopped consulting the Glossary in the back because it seemed like it never had the names that I was looking for. War & Peace is easier to keep track of.

I should post something positive for once. The end of Lord of Chaos is good stuff. Jordan can write a fast-paced scene, sometimes. I think it’s not hard to tell which chapters he spent more time crafting.

I'm again re-evaluating whether to continue, especially if the next volume is the start of the real slog. I wanted to read up to the end of book 6 because people say that it's one of the highlights of the series.

ppl otm

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Monday, 6 November 2023 15:17 (two years ago)

around book 8 or so he becomes obsessed with women unconsciously smoothing and/or tightly gripping their skirts. or, occasionally, stopping themselves from doing so

why are skirts always plural? how many have they got?

fewer mentions lately of people being ‘in their shirtsleeves’ at least, which he apparently means as ‘wearing a short-sleeved shirt’

also been a while since anyone was ‘lying in his teeth’ thank god. sometimes his phrasing is that of an alien; wonder where he stood on sleep/vikinghood

mookieproof, Monday, 6 November 2023 19:44 (two years ago)

Doesn't shirtsleeves just mean without a jacket?

Number None, Monday, 6 November 2023 20:11 (two years ago)

There's kind of an inverse correlation between braid-tugging and skirt-smoothing, from the looks of it

https://www.reddit.com/r/WoT/comments/60t4n8/stats_for_braids_tugged_skirts_smoothed/

jmm, Monday, 6 November 2023 20:34 (two years ago)

tbh i found the dice rolling in mat's head way more annoying than the skirt gripping

, Monday, 6 November 2023 20:45 (two years ago)

And how his visions are just version of snakes and ladders.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 6 November 2023 20:46 (two years ago)

Doesn't shirtsleeves just mean without a jacket?

you may be right! but i would ask what sleeves have to do with anything; why couldn't one just be 'wearing a shirt'

in itself i mind the dice rolling less annoying than the skirt smoothing/gripping, but the latter is usually limited to once per woman per scene. but yeah when the dice are rolling, every second paragraph ends with some version of 'why won't those bloody dice stop rolling! something bad is going to happen!'

mookieproof, Monday, 6 November 2023 21:20 (two years ago)

also tyvm jmm -- that is good web shit

mookieproof, Monday, 6 November 2023 21:23 (two years ago)

"Dropped with no resolution," you say?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 6 November 2023 21:24 (two years ago)

okay i actually enjoyed the whole part in which tuon bloody daughter of the flaming nine moons was mat's 'captive'

mookieproof, Saturday, 11 November 2023 01:58 (two years ago)

also i kinda want someone to rewrite this whole thing from the point of view of balwer

mookieproof, Saturday, 11 November 2023 06:27 (two years ago)

nearing the end of book 13 and having spent three whole books rescuing best beloved faile, it is suddenly tarmon gai'don time bros!

our man really *found* himself atop dragonmount i guess? bless

sanderson's sentences are perhaps slightly less felicitous overall than jordan's, but he more than makes up for it by trying to skip the exhausting repetition (not least the whole flaming 'men!' 'women!' thing). i mean he'll still do it, as well as the 'arms folded under the breasts' thing, but you can tell he's pandering

might have gone a little too far but some of it is actually funny, unlike anything in the 100K pages that robert jordan wrote in his life. mat *should* be funny, and sanderson actually makes him funny-ish.

also appreciate him skipping around a bit more rather than having to spend 300 pages on one person's shit

i remember vague things about the finale, having not quite gotten there yet. among them being the fact that egwene is the real hero of the whole thing, right?

taishar ilx0r

mookieproof, Tuesday, 14 November 2023 08:25 (two years ago)

the introduction of entire new characters and threads by sanderson is most most most unwelcome

mat isnt funny medieval characters arent theyd have slayed at the tyme tho
