Your haircut

calstars, Sunday, 22 October 2023 22:30 (two years ago)

you folks sure have a lot of thoughts for something you don’t care about. where were you all when I revived “let’s all hang up on podcasts?” for a proper beat down?

brimstead, Sunday, 22 October 2023 23:17 (two years ago)

lol

calstars, Sunday, 22 October 2023 23:30 (two years ago)

ok so my friends are nerds and are into a lot of nerd shit so here is the nerd shit i am not really into

the podcast "welcome to night vale"
whatever "SCP" is
warhammer
superhero movies
whatever is the hot new video game, like "elden ring" or whatever

in theory i'm super into queer kids cartoons but i never actually get around to watching them, anything that takes me more than ten minutes is a serious commitment for me

in fact there's a lot of stuff i am interested in, but i'm more interested in reading about it than i am in experiencing it directly

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 23 October 2023 00:43 (two years ago)

oh i am also a nerd, in case it seemed like i was saying my friends are nerds and i'm not, lol

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 23 October 2023 00:44 (two years ago)

whatever "SCP" is

This is me just now, after perusing a bunch of reviews of early 60s UK R&B albums.

Almost intereszzzzzzzzzzzzzz

calstars, Monday, 23 October 2023 02:26 (two years ago)

To be clear: zzz

calstars, Monday, 23 October 2023 02:30 (two years ago)

This podcast discussion is interminable and boring enough to be a podcast.

i can make this thread even MORE *i don't even own a t.v.* and wrench it from the cold dead grip of podcasts and in honor of the new Apple iphone 15 safely say: i don't care about phones and i have never even used someone else's iphone and i will never own one. i don't hate them and i don't think about them. quite frankly, i just don't care about them. oh, and just so you know, it's beautiful outside.

scott seward, Monday, 23 October 2023 11:50 (two years ago)

I'm kind of surprised the name "podcast" stuck for so long, it seems so early Apple centric.

I still think that when I see "blog" or "blogger".

pplains, Monday, 23 October 2023 14:00 (two years ago)

I think there are too many types of podcast to make a blanket statement about the form. Accepting Tracer’s list of 4 basic types, you end up with 65 or so possible combinations! I haven’t done that type of math in a while so sorry if I’m off.

I think the scripted/edited format is definitely akin to a NPR show. The talk radio style ones are overall less for me, but it’s interesting how there are parallels, all the way down to people who conflate the views of the podcasters and those of listeners — sometimes those same listeners where consumption is shaping their own views.

I’m in the “something to listen to while doing something else” camp, but I think it’s useful to hear how others speak on topics without necessarily being a participant. Like overhearing a conversation, but without feeling the need to interject or be emotionally involved? There’s a level of context in conversation that doesn’t translate to writing.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 23 October 2023 14:06 (two years ago)

I think conversation can be an art (what is My Dinner With Andre otherwise)? Dialogue is THE method towards truth, right?

ha yes I was thinking abt that movie as I typed the question

My Podcast With Andre

an icon of a worried-looking, long-haired, bespectacled man (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 23 October 2023 14:27 (two years ago)

At one point I vaguely thought about "My Dinner with Andre the Giant" but I see it's been done by one of those shows I've not watched and don't care about (swerving madly to stay on topic)

The Royal House of Hangover (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 23 October 2023 15:09 (two years ago)

As a life-long listener and creator of music; I do not care about music theory. I _want_ to care about music theory! I can't make myself. The minute I start digging into it I get sleepy. I'm slightly more interested in composition, but still haven't managed to make time for learning it. It came up because I recently had a conversation with a guy I knew who I didn't know had more than a passing interest in music and he dropped some serious knowledge on me, and the whole time my inner voice was screaming, "Don't caaarrreee!"

beard papa, Monday, 23 October 2023 16:24 (two years ago)

I mean a little theory isn’t a bad thing. You don’t have to drown in it.

calstars, Monday, 23 October 2023 17:16 (two years ago)

So they say.

pplains, Monday, 23 October 2023 18:02 (two years ago)

I find that music theory people are often of the opinion that if you don't understand music theory and/or can't play an instrument then you can't really truly appreciate music and your opinion on music is therefore of less value than theirs.

I dunno, it's helped me in my marriage that my husband can explain that he likes, predominately, songs in major keys ... i.e. it helped me not immediately go to "You don't like this song?! What's wrong with you?!"

Night of the music theory people

calstars, Monday, 23 October 2023 18:39 (two years ago)

my problem is: i have probably read a million classical record liner-notes and booklets and histories and my memory of everything i have read is about...0%. it just doesn't stick. i have never played an instrument though. (third grade violin and guitar doesn't count.)

scott seward, Monday, 23 October 2023 18:49 (two years ago)

there are about a hundred ways to appreciate music and every one adds value, grateful to any critics who get this.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 23 October 2023 18:52 (two years ago)

i laughed reading the notes to one of the most amazing southern indian carnatic dance music CDs that i own the other night - i love the sections that remind me of kurt schwitters and din daa daa - when they said that one of the sections in the performance is relatively new to the form because: IT WAS ONLY 700 YEARS OLD! haha. so, now i just read liner-notes for the jokes.

scott seward, Monday, 23 October 2023 18:56 (two years ago)

The TV ratings for the World Series. Every single goddamn year they mention how the network execs are quaking in their boots if there’s a small-market team or they’re breathing easy if there’s not a small-market team. You never ever hear this shit for any other sport’s championship. Like fuck off and let Arizona fans enjoy their moment.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 25 October 2023 17:30 (two years ago)

Tbf, I think the execs also threw up their hands in despair when the Denver Nuggets made the NBA Finals.

I just don’t care about AI generated art. Maybe I should? But it’s so ugly and obvious at the moment I can’t bother caring about it’s ramifications

#1 García Fan (H.P), Friday, 3 November 2023 19:17 (two years ago)

AI art sucks balls

calstars, Friday, 3 November 2023 19:27 (two years ago)

AI art should not even be called art. It should just be called illustration.

Artificial intelligence? More like real stupidity!

Dwigt Rortugal (Eric H.), Friday, 3 November 2023 19:30 (two years ago)

Counterpoint is that the technology is advancing so fast this is kind of like saying "well THIS room isn't burning at all, it's totally fine right now, who cares". Not that I'm motivated to make an argument about it aside from pointing out that any posts about the current specific state of AI (ugly and obvious) are going to age really badly by like say next week or something.

Evan, Friday, 3 November 2023 19:35 (two years ago)

Oh, is that the cutoff for when dipshits are going to stop typing in prompts like "the Mona Lisa, but with anime girl eyes and huge tits" and paying to have the results advertised on social media?

Tahuti Watches L&O:SVU Reruns Without His Ape (unperson), Friday, 3 November 2023 19:42 (two years ago)

As a human illustrator I kinda take offense.

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 3 November 2023 22:47 (two years ago)

Since you've got more skin in the game than I do — although as someone who writes things I care deeply about (record reviews, books) and things I don't care about at all (draft letters to health insurance customers), I can have some limited perspective — what do you think is the right term for AI-created or -assisted illustration to differentiate it from entirely human, artistic illustration?
