podcasts are basically what keeps me from getting bored when doing chores around the house, which keeps me doing the chores longer, which keeps my house cleaner

I like history podcasts for driving, I don't really care if I can pass a test on the material afterward and they're usually pretty chill. Thankfully Dan Carlin's success didn't push other history podcasts to emulate his horrible AND I QUOTE cadence.

I've never liked driving to music before early evening, when I was driving 3+ hours every day between job sites it was a rotation of the least annoying sports talk option and NPR, podcasts saved me from ever having to hear Terri Gross's voice or an interview with a footbaw coach.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 22 October 2023 04:53 (two years ago)

I personally can’t learn anything from films

I have literally never listened to music, trying to keep that streak going

I also tend to believe that theatre-loving types read less and are more incurious but perhaps that’s just the people I know, who tend to cite plays in any conversation in an almost boosterish way. It’s cultlike and weird.

I've tried appreciating paintings but they make me want to murder the entire human race

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 22 October 2023 07:24 (two years ago)

I have also never listened to a podcast. I want to but I always feel like I'd just rather listen to music. I have a list people have recommended me. Will get around to it eventually.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Sunday, 22 October 2023 08:30 (two years ago)

My son recommended a podcast about someone who got bumped off ‘Band of Brothers’ by Tom Hanks as he had ‘dead eyes’. I listened to three of the and they were ok, but couldn’t face another 28 (!) of them.

I’m like ENBB, I’m listening to it and thinking I could be listening to some music instead.

not wrong tbh

re podcasts, i can do audiobooks by good writers or like mary beard talking about rome (which kate posted i believe). oh and my beloved big mood, little mood because danny avery is a delightful bad ass and i need good vibes from fellow family-estrangers.

ꙮ (map), Sunday, 22 October 2023 13:59 (two years ago)

i feel a little sad about posting these but here are some new things i just don't care about :|

fire dancing / fire performers (sorry to my friends j & s, you're lovely people but i just don't care about the fire dancing you're super into)

"light art" and "light shows" that are just some LED tripper trapper derpy bsullshit. lol maybe this one shades into "i actively dislike this"

ꙮ (map), Sunday, 22 October 2023 14:14 (two years ago)

but let's be real, anyone who gets joy from LED lights can't be trusted.

ꙮ (map), Sunday, 22 October 2023 14:18 (two years ago)

i don't really believe that tbc

ꙮ (map), Sunday, 22 October 2023 14:21 (two years ago)

the local bonfire night and firework display stopped having an actual fire a few years ago and this year is having lasers instead of fireworks

koogs, Sunday, 22 October 2023 14:22 (two years ago)

the only time I saw fire performers I was at a beach bar in Ko Phi Phi and the bar owner stole my shoes and had his mate chase me down the road with a machete, so not the best of associations

Dead Eyes rules, and part of what's fun is how much he's able to wring out of the premise of the show, which is ostensibly about finding out why Tom Hanks fired him but is really about ambition and failure and making peace with things. Great podcast.

jaymc, Sunday, 22 October 2023 14:23 (two years ago)

in dodgy podcast news:
eduard karl joseph michael marcus koloman volkhold maria habsburg-lothringen, archduke of austria and thus heir to the entire austro-hungarian empire (as founded by RADBOT OF KLETTGAU (985 – 1045), plus hungarian ambassador to the vatican, will be guesting shortly on the deprecated REST IS HISTORY podcast (it's already recorded, and is due to be broadcast on the very day that empire is restored no doubt) (given the politics of the podcasters)

mark s, Sunday, 22 October 2023 14:37 (two years ago)

yes fact is mixed with sarcasm in that post and yet the founder of the habsburg line was indeed called RADBOT, ai will end us all

mark s, Sunday, 22 October 2023 14:38 (two years ago)

I will give it another go, but by the end of the third episode I was ‘dude, get over it’.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 22 October 2023 15:30 (two years ago)

It’s odd: when I was a blogger, I devoured blogs; when I was a music writer, I devoured music writing; but now that I’m a podcaster, I almost totally ignore other podcasts. In particular, I’ve sampled plenty of other UK music commentary podcasts, but none grabbed me and many irritated me. So the only podcast I now follow is the one that an old friend hosts (Chart Music).

mike t-diva, Sunday, 22 October 2023 15:56 (two years ago)

xps oh yeah two people randomly shooting the shit is exactly the same as a painting or a piece of music, rmde

Joe Pera has a podcast, just sayin'

Dwigt Rortugal (Eric H.), Sunday, 22 October 2023 16:58 (two years ago)

i’m completely podcasted out

there are only four genres of podcast btw. many are combinations of these but there are only four.

- the interview
- the mystery
- information straight into my veins
- the friendship simulator

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:01 (two years ago)

yeah sorry CAAL, podcasts aren’t an artform

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:01 (two years ago)

i absolutely do not care about podcasts. someone says "did you listen to x" and it's a podcast, my brain shuts off immediately. the only one I've ever really liked listening to was the dolly parton one.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:13 (two years ago)

yeah sorry CAAL, podcasts aren’t an artform

lol this statement is meaningless

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:17 (two years ago)

have you all heard of YouTube? You can look at people talking at you

brimstead, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:20 (two years ago)

podcasts are a medium for transmitting various forms of art, including music and poetry

xpost sounds scary

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:20 (two years ago)

I would agree that podcasts are folklore, still not so sure about art. how many times do y'all re-listen to a podcast?

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:21 (two years ago)

I relisten to certain podcasts in the same way that I'll rewatch certain shows, but I also don't see why replay value should be the criterion for art

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:24 (two years ago)

is a conversation art? serious question.

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:26 (two years ago)

I kinda liked "You're Wrong About" when it was a going thing but then it started to grate. "Every Little Thing" had a similar trajectory.

"Lingthusiasm" and "No Such Thing as a Fish" scratch some of the same itches (I guess what Tracer would call information straight into my veins).

Plus various sources of British history. Every once in a while the "Stuff You Missed"/"Stuff You Should Know" can be ok. "99% Invisible" and "Reply All" could sometimes work

Musicwise, "20K Hertz," "Strong Songs," Switched-on Pop," and "Cocaine and Rhinestones."

But as noted I go through times when I want words pouring into my ears and times when I don't.

The Royal House of Hangover (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:26 (two years ago)

is a conversation art? serious question.

If it is enjoyed as such by a listener then yes, but there's many podcasts that aren't conversations.

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:29 (two years ago)

I realize we live in the post-Duchamp world where art is in the eye of the beholder, but to me categorizing (to use a best case example) an interesting audio-book that is effectively a well-researched encyclopedia article in the "art" category strains that definition.

otoh it is absolutely folklore, oral transmission of culture.

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:34 (two years ago)

all that this conversation has taught me is that my statement about podcast people being cultlike and weird in their boosterism is 100% true and is much of what turns me off about them

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:36 (two years ago)

well but again you are creating a category of what a podcast is that doesn't apply to hundreds and hundreds of examples of the medium

thus my original assertion that "podcasts are a medium for transmitting various forms of art, including music and poetry".

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:37 (two years ago)

podcasts are just downloadable radio shows. my two podcasts are

* immersive multi-hour mixes of music and sounds from every year of recorded sound
* mixes of field recordings, old cassettes, personal stories, interviews with friends & family and original music

if you hate listening to two amateur comedians jabber away for two hours about nothing, fine, me too. if you don't want to listen to audiobooks, fine. if you think 99% of podcasts are awful, sure, agreed. if you believe the entire medium can never be art, then go fuck yourself.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:38 (two years ago)

Yeah I was going to say the radio show comparison. That’s always been the one that made sense to me. To argue that they’re not worthwhile because they “aren’t art” is just a bizarre line of thinking.

I’m going to get fined for being right, again (gyac), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:40 (two years ago)

the whole “people who watch tv are dumb” thing… please

brimstead, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:42 (two years ago)

all that this conversation has taught me is that my statement about podcast people being cultlike and weird in their boosterism is 100% true and is much of what turns me off about them

what about chapbook people

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:43 (two years ago)

i utilized the term “artform” because that’s what your strawman was doing, CAAL. your podcasts sound fine.

gyac, i’m going to kindly ask you to never interact with me or anything i’ve said on here ever again.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:45 (two years ago)

CAAL that helps, since I def consider radio shows to be art! Not trying to be rude here, I just have zero familiarity with the medium.

I’m not talking to you! The general conversation was going that way.

You didn’t even make the original argument scrolling back up?

I’m going to get fined for being right, again (gyac), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:47 (two years ago)

table you sound like "I don't actually have a tv" except more like "i dont actually have a tv and if you ever watch it then you're a moron" and if you are as much a dick to your acquaintances as you have been to me (and gyac now) then I'm sure they are as turned off by you as you are by them.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:49 (two years ago)

fwiw CAAL, that does help— I think that when podcasts went more from “mixes and weird audio experiences “ to “talk radio and NPR wannabes” is when i lost the thread. i still adore some old podcast mixes from a decade or so ago.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:49 (two years ago)

also fwiw: I actually like you, CAAL, and apologize for being a dick. i just dislike podcasts.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:54 (two years ago)

they can't be all bad, at least now I know which dinosaur would win in a fight

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:55 (two years ago)

CaaL fwiw I don’t think of your projects as podcasts even though that’s the delivery form. like i don’t think of the Resident Advisor mix series as podcasts even though it’s very successful, long-lived etc. Your stuff would work equally well as CD releases or spotify tracks or even YouTube videos! (have you ever thought about this?) but i’ll admit rss is pretty handy

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:57 (two years ago)

it’s also that i’m using “podcasts” as a metonym for “podcasts that mimic talk radio or NPR.” That seems to be the bigger issue in my posting, so once again, apologies to CAal and etc.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 October 2023 17:58 (two years ago)
