tbf, Trump will often insert a parenthetical "can you believe it?" into these stories to emphasize just how unbelievable they are. obviously he's a man to whom unbelievable things happen as often as they are needed to prove whatever point he wishes to make.

I'll admit that, as a person who is opposed to every aspect of his existence, I'm occasionally overly eager to go for the 'what a fucking moron' GOTCHA! at times when the facts perhaps don't necessarily warrant a GOTCHA!, but in this instance, it really does not seem like he's capable of separating the character from the actor who plays the character. I'm genuinely unconvinced that he's aware of the difference.

seems like it was
Mads Mikkelsen said in a 2016 CBS News interview that he had no idea what to think about Donald Trump as he had never met him.
"He’s obviously not the classic politician, that’s for sure. I can definitely laugh at some of the stuff he says but I can also go, 'Oh my God, did he say that?' I think he’s a fresh wind for some people, but that’s what you’re voting for, I guess, right? It’s a big job," he said.

The simplest explanation is that Trump forgot Anthony Hopkins' name so he substituted the name of the one role he played that everyone instantly recognizes. Chances are if he'd said "Anthony Hopkins" instead of "Hannibal Lector" fewer people in the audience would have known just who he was talking about anyway.

― hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 October 2023 23:48 (two years ago)
OK. I'm guessing Trump has no idea that there was a Lector-based TV series or that more than one actor ever played the part, so he probably thought all along it was Hopkins who said something nice about him. After all, who has time for all these unimportant details, when the only important or interesting thing was that the guy who played Lector knows how great he (Trump) is. The other details never mattered. Also, Trump forgot Hopkins' name. It didn't matter either.

"The Presidential oath, which the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment surely knew, requires the President to swear to 'preserve, protect and defend' the Constitution — not to 'support' the Constitution," said the filing by Trump's attorneys. "Because the framers chose to define the group of people subject to Section Three by an oath to 'support' the Constitution of the United States, and not by an oath to 'preserve, protect and defend' the Constitution, the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment never intended for it to apply to the President."

Elsewhere, per the NYT, strange things are afoot:
Steven C. Lee, an Illinois pastor charged in the Georgia election interference case against Donald J. Trump and his allies, is hoping to fund his legal defense, at least in part, with sales of “MAGA honey” bottles shaped like the former president.
