lol
thanks y'all. for now, I went with a replacement french press that won't break as, on further reflection, my main problem is our extremely limited counter space. if we ever get a bigger kitchen I'll get myself a gooseneck kettle and finally become a fancy pour-over man
― rob, Thursday, 5 October 2023 15:41 (two years ago)
I did pour-over for years (still do occasionally) but now I have this little Bialetti moka pot thing to make Americanos in the morning. No need need for filters, but make sure to put water in there! Otherwise it gets really hot and melts the handle lol
― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 5 October 2023 16:53 (two years ago)
I do pour-overs for 2 on the mornings when I’m home, but it only makes two 8-9 oz cups. Then about an hour or two later I make another 2 cups. It works fine for me, but my wife sometimes gets impatient for the 2nd cup.
― o. nate, Thursday, 5 October 2023 17:30 (two years ago)
do you use a Chemex? I did think about the biggest one of those, though ultimately I need something that will keep the coffee hot for an unpredictable number of hours
in retrospect, lockdown would have been an ideal time to have perfected the pour-over life, ah well
― rob, Thursday, 5 October 2023 17:33 (two years ago)
if you need coffee for multiple hours, wouldn't it taste better to just warm up a cup in the microwave rather than continually heating for a long time?
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 5 October 2023 17:36 (two years ago)
so far, pouring french press brewed coffee into a thermos has worked, but you have a point
― rob, Thursday, 5 October 2023 17:38 (two years ago)
This might be coffee snobbery but I don't think you're supposed to ever zap in the microwave. Using a thermos rules imho
― a (waterface), Thursday, 5 October 2023 17:54 (two years ago)
I don’t have a Chemex, I use a Hario V60 but either one would work. A thermos is great for keeping coffee hot.
― o. nate, Thursday, 5 October 2023 17:55 (two years ago)
use a thermos or just get a huge ass insulated "coffee cup"
― lag∞n, Thursday, 5 October 2023 18:09 (two years ago)
Isn't a Mr. Coffee essentially a pour-over that can keep it warm?
― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 5 October 2023 18:11 (two years ago)
in my experience, not even close
― rob, Thursday, 5 October 2023 18:13 (two years ago)

i fucking love brewed coffee. 12 cup pot or gtfo.
― ꙮ (map), Thursday, 5 October 2023 18:25 (two years ago)
I remember at my pre-covid office, so many people would auto-pause to get an 'early'cup... that the pot would be empty before it was even finished brewing
― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 5 October 2023 18:30 (two years ago)
My main concern with the Mr. Coffee is the burner under the carafe that keeps the coffee warm. If you immediately take the brewed coffee and dump it in a thermos, it can be fine. Also in my experience for best results you should brew less than the maximum capacity of the machine, because there’s not enough room for the right amount of grounds.

breaking coffee news
McDonald's said it is opening a new chain called CosMc's that will focus on coffee and other drinks, a step that is viewed as a challenge to Starbucks and Dunkin' as the fast-food giant seeks to boost afternoon sales.
CosMc's concept is "what would happen if a McDonald's character from the 1980s that was part alien, part surfer, part robot" opened a restaurant in 2023.

how long before cosMc has to go back to his home planet i wonder

Had the worst coffee ever at Dunkin's the other day - surprised because I remember their coffee being pretty solid (though I only make like two trips at best per year). They put in sugar and cream but didn't bother to stir it (and initially neither did I, I was in a hurry), so I thought that might've been it, but even if it was black, it shouldn't taste so medicine-y. Maybe it was too late in the day at 2pm and the coffee was going bad?

the fun thing about dunkin is having absolutely no idea how your coffee will taste each time you go.

I'll have an Irish coffee once every several years, that's about all I can do
― omar little, Thursday, 14 December 2023 02:29 (two years ago)
i use my lovely aeropress every day, so i end up with a lot of grounds: if i bin them immediately the bin bag leaks coffeejuice so i dump them in a little tupperware box to dry by the sink before binning them (which is a bit unsightly)
today as an experiment i recycled a whole boxful of grounds, to try and get a second cups-worth from them
result = hmmm, the coffee is weaker (but i can always use three spoons of grounds instead of two), and they're looser packed, so the press pushes the hot water through them much faster, with liquid spillage more likely
spillage of small amounts of used grounds all over my counters is apparently unavoidable, the actual most annoying consequence
― mark s, Thursday, 14 December 2023 10:43 (two years ago)
x-posts - they opened a DD here but the sizes are UK sizes and it's pour over and not the same at all. They also made roast dinner stuffed donuts which just no please stop this.

I'm sure the dunkins booze is disgusting but I'd try it in a heartbeat.
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 14 December 2023 10:50 (two years ago)
mark you could leave the little puck of grounds in the aeropress for a couple of hours and then eject it with extreme prejudice once it's dried out some
― Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 14 December 2023 10:59 (two years ago)
and here's a pro-tip, if you tire of sourcing the paper filter discs you could spring for this reasonably priced re-usable metal one

just don't throw it away by accident. no of course i have never done that*
*reader i have done that
― Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 14 December 2023 11:02 (two years ago)
leave the puck in to reuse immediately for a second cup, you mean? yes i could -- i will try that once i use up (or tire of) this box-full of used grounds
my second-cup conclusion re the experiment this morning is that reused grounds be very much tastin like reused grounds: it's coffee but it's not especially delicious
― mark s, Thursday, 14 December 2023 11:07 (two years ago)
i mean after you’ve pressed your coffee you could leave the puck in there to dry instead of in another container
― Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 14 December 2023 11:16 (two years ago)
i like saying “puck” we need to create more reasons to use this word

fast food places have to cater to local tastes which usually means better food than the US version, but not in the UK lol

Or maybe just more hockey.
― birdistheword, Thursday, 14 December 2023 16:05 (two years ago)
x-post Ha yes that's usually the way it works. There's a McDonald's I was reading about recently somewhere in the US now that serves weird items from other Macdonald's around the world. That's kind of neat.
I was just hopeful I'd be able to get a giant iced coffee but no. There is an Egg Slut around my office and I think that's an American breakfast sandwich place so will try that eventually.
