x-files law&order crossover when

mark s, Monday, 25 September 2023 12:01 (two years ago)

the truly absurd stuff is in later seasons when scully still refuses to believe in aliens even tho she was abducted and impregnated by them

lag∞n, Monday, 25 September 2023 12:24 (two years ago)

Scully is a stand in for the MSM

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Monday, 25 September 2023 12:42 (two years ago)

x-files is the funniest version of a tv show not putting characters in protective gear because it makes it harder to show the actors responding to things

alien spores? virus spread by a sewage monster? parasite that just reappeared from the neolithic era? we’ll just tromp around in our normal fbi outfits like normal

At min 44 of today's livestream, Catturd has to jump off the call. At min 59 Jewel breaks the news that he's been swatted, uttering the instantly immortal phrase, "Cops are absolutely everywhere, they're all over Catturd ranch"https://t.co/1HDRKqGDRR https://t.co/jOtNMHtm7q

I would say your sample is skewed by blue ticks, and that your sample is people goofing about online

Wasn't there some viral post a decade or so ago by a concealed-carry guy going on about "wolves" and "sheep" and how he's one of the wolves protecting the sheep?

Definitely a lot of concealed-carry people walk around with this cosplay fantasy, just hoping for the chance to be a hero.

Oh, it was wolves, sheep and sheepdogs. The concealed-carry folks are the sheepdogs (in their addled minds).

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 13:03 (two years ago)

I love how so many of the responses are like "how dare you suggest that anxiety has anything to do with the constant grinding fear I have of every single person with whom I come into contact?"

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 13:10 (two years ago)

there was a 'what's in your bag?' thread somewhere where people not only considered their guns essential, but often a spare clip of ammunition in case, i guess, they had to shoot more than 12 things in a day.

koogs, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 13:41 (two years ago)

There is a police training program that way too many departments have paid for that explicitly use the wolves/sheep metaphor

as for the "what's in your bag" type of posts, there were multiple companies that made fancy notebooks, etc. that had to keep untagging themselves in everyday carry tumblr communities because they didn't want to be known as the notebook you carry with your gun

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 14:12 (two years ago)

just out of curiosity how many times in a year do people actually get to live out their hero fantasies? I know that Texas church shooting someone did but only after the shooter murdered 30 or so people.

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 14:32 (two years ago)

also, how often do those guns end up being used in a less heroic manner?

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:11 (two years ago)

depends on if you think confusing you daughter for a home invader is heroic or not

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:23 (two years ago)

I was taking a whizz in a Target restroom about 6 months ago and there was a guy in the stall next to the urinals who I guess finished his business and stood up and flushed and then I heard a loud CLACK and looked down and under the stall wall I could see a goddam handgun having just fallen out of his holster onto the floor. Fortunately I guess the safety was on and he did not shoot me in the foot, but I wanted to yell at him WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU CARRYING IN TARGET? Instead I laughed a little (hopefully loud enough for him to hear), washed up and got the heck out of there.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:24 (two years ago)

(I mean, I know why he was carrying, it was to protect himself in case a Pride display jumped out at him)

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:25 (two years ago)

i used to go to a barber in a lil tourist town in new hampshire who would open carry, thank you sir for protecting me from all the hikers

concealed carry guy, earlier today

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:29 (two years ago)

i talked to him about it once and he was super relieved that i didnt call him a bad person and that i had a reasonable rationale for gun control, cant remember what i said tho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:34 (two years ago)

I saw a guy open carrying a giant rifle at Festival Foods and I wanted to yell at him too! first of all this is obviously not making anyone feel safer, secondly when in the history of grocery stores has there ever developed a situation that would be improved by a random guy carrying an automatic rifle? I mean I didn't feel panicked or anything, though now that I think about it anyone who deems it necessary or fun to carry a gun into a grocery store probably needs to be afforded a wide latitude

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:35 (two years ago)

feel like you could shoot anyone open carrying and itd be ok

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:36 (two years ago)

on a similar note my son's school did an ALICE drill a couple weeks ago and is now regularly having nightmares about school shooters. he's 8 years old.

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:36 (two years ago)

my skin crawls on the rare occasion i've been around cops openly carrying guns, i can't imagine how freaky it is seeing randos in the supermarket

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:38 (two years ago)

that shit is so dire, pure security theater that does nothing but terrorize children and give consulting paychecks to cops xp

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:39 (two years ago)

anyone who deems it necessary or fun to carry a gun into a grocery store probably needs to be afforded a wide latitude

How I break it down too. Basically, if I know someone has a gun in a public setting I try to put some distance between me and them. I have tried to explain to concealed-carry people that while their gun might make them feel safer, it has the exact opposite effect on me.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:40 (two years ago)

I saw a guy open carrying a giant rifle at Festival Foods

Maybe he actually just bought the gun at the grocery store but didn't want to use a bag because he cared about the environment.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:42 (two years ago)

Despite living in Texas, I have yet to come across anyone open carrying. If I did, I'd probably struggle to resist confronting them about it, even though I know that's not a wise idea.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:52 (two years ago)

nah I think it's a pretty natural instinct to avoid the dude carrying something that can instantly kill you

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:53 (two years ago)

Despite my mangled syntax, I'm attempting to say the opposite though. My instinct is to go right up to them and tell them exactly how I feel.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:55 (two years ago)

open carrying prob getting rarer as most places where its legal just allow concealed carry now

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 15:59 (two years ago)

carrying a gun is inherently a threat, but you have to recognise other people as something more than NPCs to understand that

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:00 (two years ago)

I'm not any more in favor of concealed carry, but at least those people could make a plausible argument that they aren't doing it purely to terrorize random strangers

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:01 (two years ago)

some people are truly nuts for their guns they love them want to marry them, which is pretty sick when you consider theyre machines for killing

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:02 (two years ago)

The same people who have Punisher skulls with American flags inside of them on their big trucks also open-carry guns and consider themselves "pro-life."

There is stupidity, yes, but there is also denial, and most of these types are simply in denial that they are beholden to culture and mindset of death and destruction.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:08 (two years ago)

it's sociopathy by definition i think, but medicalising it doesn't help any more than trying to engage in reasoned debate would

actually funny to think about gun "addiction" and how those who defend gun ownership would respond to other addictions

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:11 (two years ago)

there are so many gun nuts that dont drive murdered out trucks tho, my dads neighbor a 70 something guy whos always helping out with something around town carrying in old ladies groceries making sure people know how to sort their recycling at the dump and whatnot is always strapped, hes also a conspiracy nut needless to say

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:12 (two years ago)

mistaking the power to kill for the power to create life, a common misunderstanding

ꙮ (map), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:13 (two years ago)

then theres tons of people who arent really that into guns but theyre just normal things to have in their local culture so theyve got a couple around

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:14 (two years ago)

i know quite a few poltically liberal gun control supporting gun owners just cause as long as theyre legal why not theyre pretty sick you can go shoot some cans if you want

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:17 (two years ago)

yeah i think cars are a reasonable analogy to guns in some ways, so normalised that it seems almost insane to question their normalness - if you live in a culture where they've been normal for long enough

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:17 (two years ago)

yup

lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:18 (two years ago)

I'm surprised there's not a "gun lane" for armed drivers.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:24 (two years ago)

Despite living in Texas, I have yet to come across anyone open carrying.

Same, I was installing some of the 'no open carry on these premises' signs in a shopping center a few years ago and got yelled at by walking thumb (dude, I don't even work here I'm a contractor) but aside from that I forget that we have open carry 99% of the time.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:54 (two years ago)

I've seen a handgun on the hip here and there, once or twice, but never an AR or whatever. If I saw someone carrying one of those things I would give a wide birth and then complain to the store that as long as people like that are present I don't feel comfortable shopping there and will take my business somewhere else.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 17:18 (two years ago)

Back in AZ I had a friend who opened a bodega and started wearing a holster in an attempt to ward off robbers. I figured he was pretty responsible with the gun. Then one night we went out drinking and some guys yelled at us and he pulled out the gun and shot into the air.
