analog dial timer built into the stove is low key goat cheesed with the sauce

lag∞n, Sunday, 24 September 2023 14:47 (eight months ago) link

I haven’t had that happen, but it could be an accidental press on the timer lock screen pause/stop buttons. looks like it’s definitely a ui issue if you’re triggering presses on the lock screen in your pocket or w/e

I guess you could just glance at the time and tell siri to set an alarm for that time? alarms don’t show on the lock screen

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Sunday, 24 September 2023 14:52 (eight months ago) link

Phone is unlocked and sitting on a counter when the timer is set and I have now visually confirmed that it is counting down. At some point before the timer ends, the lock screen seems to cancel the timer instead of allowing it to sound. It doesn't happen every time but has started happening much more frequently.

Also, I have used the timer for cooking for years without issue, so much so that my phone frequently prompts me in the evening, "Do you want to set a timer for 5 minutes?". The problem only started happening within the last 6-9 months afaik. Really weird.

I just checked and I don't have any iOs updates that haven't been downloaded.

Do you have Focus or Do Not Disturb on?

calstars, Sunday, 24 September 2023 17:30 (eight months ago) link

i got an old fashioned magnetic egg timer for my fridge. i hate being in the middle of cooking and needing to touch my phone. it's inconvenient and also gross

budo jeru, Sunday, 24 September 2023 18:01 (eight months ago) link

Siri stopped speaking back to me when I set a timer, no amount of restarting and turning things off and on makes it come back.

alexa et al are are prob the best for timers, totally hands free, as long as you dont mind having a spy in your home

Some notes from the anecdotes: iOS 17.0.1 is absolutely crushing my normally reliable personal phone... The device was radiating an alarming amount of heat after a 30min FaceTime and battery life is absolutely degraded (eg, overnight charge on a typical Sunday would except to be about 30-40% by this time). I've had to top off charge it 2x from low battery mode.

The usual is to let it run down to dead, charge it to full, do a reset while on charger, then switch it off and leave it on charger for a long period - the idea is to re-educate the system about the battery characteristics.

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 25 September 2023 04:42 (eight months ago) link

I always do another full restart after a OS install. Total superstition but I’ve lucked out and avoided most problems. 17.0.1 on phone and pad now - going all in with Sonoma tomorrow.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 25 September 2023 07:42 (eight months ago) link

device going nuts after an OS update usually means the indexer or some other system service that kicked off is going nuts in the background

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 25 September 2023 13:19 (eight months ago) link

i'd been running the beta and def had worse battery performance; have the standard install now and haven't noticed phone getting hot but battery is still not great, but I'm inclined to think my battery may just need a replacement (this is an iphone 11 which I refuse to upgrade until I absolutely have to)

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 25 September 2023 13:37 (eight months ago) link

I think iOS 17 is the first integer update I've had in ages where I haven't noticed a battery drain hit. It's weird how these things are so user-specific.

akm - have you checked battery health in Settings? Apple recommends changing once it hits 80% maximum capacity but in my experience it's worth doing it long before that.

Alba, Monday, 25 September 2023 14:14 (eight months ago) link

yeah it's at 84. I'm sure it needs a replacement, I've just been lazy

the main feature i was excited about doesn't work for me :(

tvos can now do facetime with an iphone running ios 17 as the camera via continuity camera. great feature for calls to grandparents with kids on the couch! the camera even follows people around via (usually annoying) center stage.

doesn't work for me though, apparently possibly because i once changed the email address on my apple id https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/tvos-17-and-facetime-no-user-in-list-qr-code-doesnt-work.2401584/page-2.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 25 September 2023 17:17 (eight months ago) link

FWIW I went for 15 Pro, since my most recent phone is the 8 and wouldn't be able to handle iOS 17 anyway. No regrets so far, it's nice seeing what all the more recent bells and whistles are.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 September 2023 17:19 (eight months ago) link

i really want the 5x zoom but don't want the iphone max. the rumor is that the normal sized pro will get the 5x zoom next year. maybe i wait it out one more year? the battery inside my 12 mini is absolutely toast. maybe i just need a new battery.

, Monday, 25 September 2023 17:28 (eight months ago) link

Yeah hearing that too about the 5x next year. I would have been happy to tough it out just a little further but again, my old one had just hit the limit!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 September 2023 17:29 (eight months ago) link

Anyone us Sonoma yet? One feature I'm very excited about is web apps. I used to use Fluid to make web apps but haven't in years. There's def many websites I'd love to break out of the browswer tab bar.

(including the claim that chrome can already create web apps that work better than this new safari feature, in case that helps dan)

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 27 September 2023 16:04 (eight months ago) link

you can already use some other browsers to run Progressive Web Apps as little standalone windows but it'll be nice to have that with Safari

I suspect Adobe are soon to leave Big Sur behind, perhaps before Apple do... or, at least I've been getting a warning for a while that Ps 25.0 (I was running the Beta for a bit) needs at least Monterey, to the point where I've rolled back to 24.7. Lr/LrC still fine for now but even in there there's stuff that just won't run on a 9yo MBP (like the "AI" denoise - 40min for a single photo!).

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 27 September 2023 17:13 (eight months ago) link

assuming apple continue their recent pattern, they will drop support (in the sense of no longer releasing security updates) for big sur in a couple of weeks.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 27 September 2023 17:33 (eight months ago) link

how/where can you make web apps w/ chrome?

dan selzer, Wednesday, 27 September 2023 18:32 (eight months ago) link

I guess Safari lets you add any site as a standalone, as it has in iOS for a while. iOS only got PWA support in the last year, though
