but the generational divide between "seriously a resident evil 2 shirt to your cover shoot? you didn't even fucking change clothes" and "my man in his resident evil 2 shirt like the king he is. living his best life" is super fascinating
Is this as simple as a generational divide? I think wide swathes of Indie music and semi-associated styles like Grunge already displayed the latter attitude, partially perhaps as a conscious stance against "phony" "showbiz" stuff. And then every now and then you'll get some ultra glam band in those genres trying to stand out exactly because they're not just wearing t-shirts. Anyway I don't think zoomers or millenials invented this.
Anyway it's fine to dress up and it's fine not to, haranguing a band on social media for making a choice on that topic either way is sadlol.

if ms swift's theoretical stained sweats appeared in the midst of all her usual concert trappings of monumental set design, dramatic lighting, lots of dancers and costume changes, her fans would probably think the stained sweats were a clever bit of irony

It is. In a way it's part of a larger transition from metal being for giant fucking dorks trying to seem cool and badass to metal being for giant fucking dorks, full stop.

I still don’t know what the “good” photo is supposed to be.. aren’t death metal band supposed to wear jeans and t shirts, not Sean Lennon skinsuits?

looking at Decibel covers from the past year or so, this doesn't seem like a new thing:

The "good" photo is a band understanding that you should look striking, larger than life, or at least cooler than your lamest fan in your band photo. The specifics are up to you, but the key is making an effort. Metal is pro wrestling. You create a character, and you show up in character. Like I said above, if you wanna be a faceless schmuck, indie rock is right there.

Yeah, you're right, there's no qualitative difference between that photo and any other photo they've ever had on their cover. I'm just craaaaazy and don't understand metal.
Yeah, it's really good.

Just remembered that when I was the editor of Metal Edge we put The Black Dahlia Murder on the cover (which was a whole thing unto itself, because it was still seen as a mag for hair metal holdovers and TBDM was too "underground" to qualify) and took their picture in a library because the original shooting location was unavailable:

As far as I can tell from a quick archive scan, the only Decibel covers to feature shorts are Deathklok in 2008 and Arch Enemy in 2005, and one of those is a cartoon

Bowie was a pop star and he wanted to be one. This metal group...don't want to be that and clearly want to just make music and work hard at their gigs.

Anybody remember the Jackie-O Motherfucker Wire cover shot kerfuffle? I just recall there was one, no idea what the details were. Seemed like a big deal at the time though.
Anyway, nice to see Akercocke made good use of the location, needs more Scanlan though:

"We are literally wearing just t-shirts and shorts in that photo. Why does anyone care. Wait until you see the whole feature." "Why would I want to be something that I'm not," asked Power, who also directly addressed the commenter who questioned their look. "If this is how you feel about Tomb Mold after seeing what we look like, by all means, stop listening to our band," he stated, adding, "That cover photo is a completely authentic portrait of who we are. Why would you want us to be anything but? This is no judgment towards the mighty Akercocke, one of the most interesting and ambitious extreme metal bands of our time. I believe they’re just as sincere as we are."

that’s a crisp clean t-shirt for a classic game. probably would command a hefty price in the vintage market if it’s official merchandise. probably a prized possession only worn for special occasions
otm. if that shirt came with a preorder for a classic PS1 game, it's way more of a flex than people might realize.
also, I dunno, tomb mold play (a now very proggy and extra-nerdy style of) death metal, right? so, aren't there tons of ancient anus.com posts from edgy black metal bands talking about how much they are/were reacting to death metal slobs in sweatpants and wearing corpsepaint and spikey wristbands and stuff to bring romanticism back to _their_ vision of metal? is this really anything new?
