Right wondered if anybody had commented on that. Keep hearing the name. Is a bit like hearing about a labour leader called Libdem or Labour Party or Tory Twat. Though obviously not with the same political connotations. Not sure you hear the party name any where near as much on the radio

I think clientele and belle and sebastian was a fair comparison, at least, if you limit it to their first few years of existence. B&S morphed into something much different over time.

I apparently can't tell the difference between A Flock of Seagulls and Grateful Dead. I was at a bar and the song on the sound system I thought was "I Ran" turned out to be "Touch of Grey". And I wasn't the only one to be momentarily confused!

Leee, you appear to be omitting William Gaddis. William Gass / William Gaddis conflation was already an in-joke in 1992 (when Gass playfully poked fun at the conflation).

I can see why; they were operating in similar literary spaces.

Not true of Stegner (a Western voice) or Styron (a Southern voice, almost as Southern as Faulkner).

To be honest I spent so much time with these guys... I kinda wish I had been doing something else. Like, almost anything else.

Pointless anecdote: On my last day of college I happened to get into an an elevator with my favorite professor. I told him about what I was interested in doing for graduate school. He said, "That's a very crowded field. You should be doing Anglo-Saxon."

Hereward the Woke (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 23 September 2023 15:19 (two years ago)

As a westerner, I find Stegner to be one of the west's most authentic voices.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 23 September 2023 16:44 (two years ago)

Jimbeaux, do you have Cormac McCarthy ist opinions?

Hereward the Woke (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 23 September 2023 16:45 (two years ago)

I loved Suttree (which is of course much more Southern than Western), liked All the Pretty Horses, and couldn't make it through The Crossing. That is the extent of my encounters with McCarthy. My brother (who gave me the Border Trilogy) adores him.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 23 September 2023 16:47 (two years ago)

Suttree stays in my mind almost constantly, but yeah you are right. It's a Southern novel.

Personally I was born in Missouri and live in Virginia so can really only understand Midwestern, Southern, and Eastern vibes. The American West is a mystery to me so Stegner is not really on my radar screen.

Hereward the Woke (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 23 September 2023 16:54 (two years ago)

When I read Angle of Repose, I immediately recognized the narrator as my people.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 23 September 2023 17:14 (two years ago)

I left out Gaddis because he's the only one I've read!

Hoisted by your own Picard (Leee), Saturday, 23 September 2023 18:54 (two years ago)

Honestly, up until this season at least, I got Corey Seagar and Trea Turner mixed up all the time. And Seager is indeed Turner's #1 on Baseball Reference's Similarity Score (913.4), although it doesn't quite work in reverse.
