i'd listen if they put out a rival Honkin' on Bobo
(I know they had an album of blues covers as mentioned upthread but I want them to do Aerosmith's Honkin album, right down to the song choices and the arrangements)

was at a family reunion a few days ago and found out a bunch of my family members once went to a Stones show because they assumed it was going to be their last chance. this was nearly 40 years ago, lol
― frogbs, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:46 (two years ago)
I saw them in fucking 1981 and we thought they were old then.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:47 (two years ago)
tbf you were wrong
― mark s, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:47 (two years ago)
It's all relative, lol, I was 16 and they seemed like pretty old dudes.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:49 (two years ago)
Idk guys, any time an active musician makes it to their 70s and onward and seeks to record/release new music, it feels like a red-letter day to me. Whether it’s Buffy or Smokey or Scott Walker or Judy Collins or Dylan or Neil, I have an intense interest in old-fart music because it does feel like a proper rarity I guess

understandable given so much happened musically between 1965 and 1981. that's really only the difference between uh, Sound of Silver to now
― frogbs, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 15:53 (two years ago)
Jagger was 38 when “Tattoo You” was released, James Murphy was 37 when “Sound of Silver” came out. So maybe Mick was still a hip young thing in ‘81, just didn’t know it at the time.

Best since 1978 according to the front page(!) of the online edition of The Times. Would that be Some Girls?
lol yes. and somebody or another has said the same of every single album they've released since then
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:24 (two years ago)
Some Girls was their best album since Exile, supposedly. It's grown better-regarded with age.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:26 (two years ago)
The super deluxe release of Exile on Main Street in 2010 was their best since 1978.
― pplains, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:37 (two years ago)
The super deluxe release Of Some Girls in 2011 was their best since Dirty Work.
― the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:38 (two years ago)
At least some of the critics in 1978 said that the Stones had jumped the shark and pointed to "Miss You" as evidence.
Then, too, there was the controversy over the "black girls" lyric. They just seemed an embarrassing anachronism.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 16:39 (two years ago)
i pretty much always play either beggars banquet, let it bleed, some girls, or emotional rescue when i play the stones now. and tattoo you. which i love. and undercover. which i also love. i think that's the stones i need in my life at this late date.

My man. Throw in Dirty Work instead of BB and that's my listening. I'm a fan of what Rob Sheffield once called their mall rat years (1978-1983).

I am shocked, shocked to find so few shout-outs to Steel Wheels and/or "Mixed Emotions" itt.

I was more plugged in to classic rock circles in the late 90's/early 00's and it did feel like every damn boomer artist was still regularly releasing music, even if just on very small labels. But of course there's way less of them around now.

old guys releasing new music is still cool especially in light of the mass exodus of the classic rock generation these last 7 years but its def pretty sad sometimes
true but also in retrospect they weren't all that old. like I think of ELP in the 90s as an example of the sadness mentioned above and then you realize that they were only in their mid-40s. which a lot of good active touring artists are right now.
idk it seemed fairly random what bands made it and what ones didn't back in the mid-60s, I often wonder what if say Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs got boosted hard and if they would've turned into the Beach Boys when they were really good or something

the bill maher parody that tim did? yeah, it was fun. he did a great job. bill maher was on ari melber's show last night on msnbc and i was hoping ari would bring it up but why would he? but ari did quote jay z. god he is such a dadrock when he does that...oof. bill maher still hates trump but is still worried about the RADICAL LEFT. cuz they so scary. how? i have no idea. i still think about how bill maher said before the 2016 election that if donald trump was elected that he wouldn't leave office. nobody believed him.
