although I actually question how much of the lost ad revenue is really because of that, when it comes to ad buys it's all about the bottom line and I suspect the real story is just that it's not profitable to advertise on Twitter right now

― frogbs, Tuesday, September 5, 2023 11:15 AM (thirty-three minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

big companies do care a lot if their ads are being served on overtly racist or other unsavory stuff, its not so much the boycotts but the underlying fact that twitter is a shithole, tho the boycotts im sure do draw attention to that, in conclusion the adl has prob lost twitter some advertisers but ultimately thats musks fault

lag∞n, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 15:55 (two years ago)

I kind of wish more of the news and legal people I follow were on Blue sky, I suppose it's just a matter of time before they move over.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 16:02 (two years ago)

musk made it a priority to let all the accounts banned for racism back on, and you had to be quite racist to get banned, if you have an old banned account and you tell them you were banned for your conservative views theyll unban you right away now, magic words

lag∞n, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 16:02 (two years ago)

another thing is Twitter is just massively unstable right now and the timeline is really janky, even if you did still want to advertise there I'd be concenered I was really getting what I was paying for.

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 16:06 (two years ago)

yeah advertisers have said twitters tools for them are fucked too, and with the api changes a lot of the third party tools stopped supporting twitter, all self inflicted

once it's out of beta. it's still hard to even get on there. that said I kind of like it. a few journalists I like are there, a couple that irritate me though (ben collins, zack budyrek)

Phil Lewis (huffpo) seems to be the most active 'journalist' on there (in scare quotes because is huffpo journalism? is what he does journalism?) and luckily he does nothing but post links to stories, he doesn't bloviate on and on about his personal life all day long.

There is a bot set up to auto post BBC news stories.

my guess is that someone specifically mentioned the ADL to Elon (for reasons) and he has absolutely no idea who is or isn't boycotting him and is happy to do some casual anti-semitism

― mh, Tuesday, September 5, 2023 11:10 AM (six hours ago)

The ADL said as a matter of policy it does not comment on legal threats. But the organization noted it recently met with X leadership, including CEO Linda Yaccarino, who Musk hired to help revive ad revenue. Yaccarino thanked ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt following the meeting last week, saying in a post on X, “A strong and productive partnership is built on good intentions and candor.”

Reading about Egyptian cassettes, still gd.

60 years ago, today, the compact audio cassette debuted in Berlin. Lou Ottens, a dutch engineer and the head of product development for the Philips factory in Belgium, was behind the invention. But what happened once the #cassette traveled well beyond his hands? 🧵 pic.twitter.com/znrXPs0QYJ

How low can he go?

Musk is collaborating with Tucker Carlson to promote a discredited, absurd, 15 year old conspiracy theory about Obama.

Of course its the @ADL's fault that major corporations don't want to advertise against this kind of content. pic.twitter.com/Nagt5Pj4lm

— Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) September 7, 2023

Lots of talk about how effective this ad boycott supposedly is, but what’s noteworthy to me is how many major corporations I still see advertising there. Basically every tech corporation with the possible exception of Apple — I’ve recently seen ads from Microsoft, Oracle etc etc. Guess they’re fine with supporting Nazism? I mean if the ADL is indeed once again buying ads too it really makes the whole ‘boycott’ claim seem hollow.

Guess they’re fine with supporting Nazism?

They don't see the Nazism as relevant to their corporate interests, so, yes, they are fine with it because they turn a blind eye to it.

I woke up last night smelling smoke - went outside and it was stronger, very triggering memories of NSW fucked up summer of bushfires a few years back - eventually found out it was hazard reduction burning (ie controlled)… but for the first time really missed Twitter as a quick go-to for community updates.

meat and two vdgg (emsworth), Monday, 11 September 2023 01:57 (two years ago)

Had a somewhat similar experience last night when we were out walking. We could see and hear a big fireworks show going off on the other side of the San Gabriel Valley at the unusual time of 11:30pm - especially for that big of a show. Community twitterbots are all gone and all other social media was useless. Even got out my phone's compass and surveying app to figure out what park in El Monte it was coming from, but still nothing.
