Midfielders haven't been named yet, and Barry could be in there. I doubt it though, even if I think he should be.

Phil Neville is in because he can play in three different positions on the pitch, even if he's only really any good in central midfield. I'm surprised to see Southgate in there, but Matthew Upson, how your stock has plummeted.

Yay Scotty Parker! Go there! Now someone break Owen Hargreaves' leg so Parker can go to Portugal.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago) link

I forgot to delete that first para.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago) link

Danny Mills must be proper fucked off.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:13 (twenty years ago) link

Standby:

Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Richard Wright (Everton), Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Gareth Southgate (Middlesbrough), Scott Parker (Chelsea), Alan Smith (Leeds).

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:13 (twenty years ago) link

Does "fucked off" mean "disappeared" in that sentence?

(what a dull, dull line-up. England are never going to win anything.)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

Heskey seems to be on his way to Birmingham.

to be fair to the bbc webmonkeys they updated/ changed things very fast, but they had the wrong details up for a few minutes.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:18 (twenty years ago) link

Barry you big tart what do you mean dull?!?! ;)

shame Defoe couldn't make it but Vassell really earned his place i feel

considering Owen didn't score in the group matches at the World Cup I think he actually will score against France. the biggest best strikers usually net in their first tournament game tho there is always the odd exception and hopefully Owen's got that out of the way and will start brightly in Portugal.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:24 (twenty years ago) link

glad Carragher is in (i would play him!), would not have taken Mills

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago) link

How many goals has Vassell scored this season?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago) link

I'm starting to get as defensive about the Nevilles as other people do about Heskey. NEVILLE-BASHING IS K-LAME THERE IS NO WAY JAMIE CARRAGHER IS BETTER THAN GARY NEVILLE.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:26 (twenty years ago) link

how many England goals has Vassell scored is arguably more pertinent

where was Steve Stone?? :( ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:27 (twenty years ago) link

Mattchester United DC.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:27 (twenty years ago) link

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago) link

defoe unluck not to get in imho

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago) link

Darius Vassell is better than Alan Smith is he?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago) link

yes Defoe was unlucky, as Vassell would've been

Dadaismus it's not about who's better, it's about who can best be used and how

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:32 (twenty years ago) link

anyone with the name Darius can't be bad anyway

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:33 (twenty years ago) link

The worrying thing about that squad is the continued reliance on Michael Owen to be getting goals. If he's not getting goals then Heskey, Rooney and Vassell aren't exactly goal machines, which is why Defoe should've been in the squad. The midfield looks like a better source of goals that the attack.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:35 (twenty years ago) link

i very much doubt Defoe would be more effective than Owen up front for England. my faith remains, except with the penalties...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:37 (twenty years ago) link

anyway thank jeebus nobody got crocked on the last day of the season - i was terrfied Gerrard would end up out again

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:37 (twenty years ago) link

Gerrard will make the difference between this team and the one that petered out against Brazil, mark my words - or put them in a pie when it's all over

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:38 (twenty years ago) link

Has La Liga finished yet? There's still time for Beckham to break his leg in two places.

Ferdinand aside, is this *gasp* the first time England have gone to a major tournament with all their key players fit and available? On the current form of Gerrard, Lampard, Terry and Campbell England should be pretty difficult to beat if not exactly scoring a boatload.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:40 (twenty years ago) link

well if the midfielders concentrate more on supplying the strikers then it shouldn't be a problem

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:42 (twenty years ago) link

We will be spared the sight of Danny Mills - that's something to be grateful to Sven for.

My changes would have been Wes Brown or Gareth Barry for P.Neville, Wright-Phillips for Dyer (SWP is really on a roll now and could have been an interesting sub to bring on - doesn't lack confidence, also does anyone else think that Dyer is really fairly ordinary),Parker for Hargreaves and Defoe for Heskey (surely the idea of Emile as an effective international striker is well and truly dead by now - why is he going?)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:44 (twenty years ago) link

Dyer has been Dire this season has he not?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:45 (twenty years ago) link

if Phil Neville gets injured in the FA Cup final, then Portsmouth's Matthew Taylor should be considered.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:47 (twenty years ago) link

Dyer shone on his debut against the mighty Luxembourg - i hope he can recapture that power

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:47 (twenty years ago) link

When Gareth Barry was 18 he was in the England Squad, under Sven he has been overlooked/ untried why?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago) link

He tried it on with Nancy.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago) link

perhaps Lee Hendrie will re-enter the fray next season

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:00 (twenty years ago) link

dear interweb, can someone pls photoshop michael owen attempting to hit a cow's arse with a banjo, thnx, bye.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 17 May 2004 13:12 (twenty years ago) link

At the moment, England's hopes rest largely on whether Steven Gerrard will be as fucking shit hot as he has been lately. I think he could win it on his own. I mean, look at the top of the Premiership:

1. Arsenal
2. Chelsea
3. Man Utd
4. Gerrard
5. Newcastle

See?

Stay away from Ulrika Jonsson in future

replace Trezeguet by Saha and get Rothen in the starting XI at the expense of one of the DMs.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Am I right in thinking a Sylvestre blunder led to the Swiss goal? Why is Santini still playing him?!?!??!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I know. Resp for two penalties and last night's goal. Only Boumsong could replace him though (Desailly being obv not an option).

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

short for Zataday, as in 'alright for fighting'.
